Southern Seas - Act 20 - Spring 57 AD
The first day of Spring brings a new season, but the rains that began six days earlier had already signalled the change. The dirt paths in and out of town have quickly turned to a soupy mud and militia activities have stopped. The rains reveal a few more leaks in the manor house, keeping you all busy with mudding and patching up parts of the building that are still in disrepair.
GRAIAN, you have emerged from your Winter studies with newfound knowledge and power. The hopes that you had for learning more about Ramathia have been teased and tantalized with myths and stories in these books about how Elves had inhabited Ramathia and that it might have been their first home in the lands of Etinerra, from wherever they came.
TOBIAS, you have gained quite a bit of knowledge from your studies, but some of the concepts still remain maddeningly out of reach. Nevertheless, you come into Spring with a new sense of your growing skills as a mage.
ATACIUS, after a few days of picking and poking at the Orc chest you recovered from Mount Keep, you manage to overcome the intricate settings and open the chest. There are a few silver coins and gold coins, but what catches your eye is a sapphire carving of a coiled serpent the size of a thumbnail, with golden points for eyes. It's probably not worth more than 50 gold crowns, but it's a beautiful piece. (You have 7 gold crowns, 143 silver crowns from the chest.)
TAKASHI, more and more, the villagers have replaced Sir Flinigan in their minds with you, and your companions are just as welcome, even TOBIAS. There are still those who are avoiding the young man, but by and large, the prejudices have lessened in the last three tendays.
CALLIN, you are also held in the highest esteem, almost as highly as TAKASHI as you have become "The Priest" to everyone. Tongues wagged very favorably to your kind handling of Philippe. A few of the single folks in Appleton have also made certain other interests known to you as well. (In my world, priests are NOT celibate. Unless they choose to be.) You received a letter from Maria who noted that the temple has become aware of your actions at the necromancer's house -- the two town guard archers told the stories of your battles and how you cleansed the altar. Maria continues to be very pleased by your progress, and word has even come to Deneb's and Otollum's attention, although they don't seem to be putting two and two together on the 'wandering priest' wanted by the thugs from the Keep.
Michelas has made great progress on the statues, and she has become the subject of much fascination from the village, now that they've realized that she's blind. Bit by bit, the faces and bodies of Sir Flinigan and Christine emerge from the stones. She estimates that she'll be done by mid-Summer and the village is planning a large feast for "The Lovers Day" when it will be done.
Still, there is a disquiet going into Spring, and the weather has not improved that feeling. It feels as if there is a spring somewhere, coiled up and ready to suddenly pop out of one's hand and into the air.
The days continue on, soggy with rain for another ten-day, until the rain turns to a softer rain, but the damage is done. No visitors have come to Appleton in the rains, and it's clear that any travel overland is near impossible, with the mud and muck that almost 20 days of rain has brought. It isn't untl near mid-spring, the 17th day of Spring, that any sort of travel might be possible.
What will you do now?
20 Sep
TOBIAS is pleased that there have been so many rainy days, as it gives him an excuse to stay inside and study more magic. He knows that his birthday is coming up soon, the 18th day of Spring, when he'll turn 15 years old, but he plans to keep it to himself and maybe have a quiet celebration by treating himself to some more cider that night.
He still tries to see Claudia whenever he can, and one day while she's training with TAKASHI he'll come up excitedly, grinning ear-to-ear, and tell her that he's perfected that "special spell" he's been working on for her. (If she'll allow it, he'll cast the Strength spell on her). After casting the spell, he'll tell her that she should try some more sword or axe sparring with TAKASHI, and see if she notices a difference.
21 Sep
(Flashback to 86th day of Winter, right before the rains start)
Upon hearing his words, Claudia grins back at TOBIAS, sharing in his excitement.
"Really, that sounds neat... will it hurt?" she asks. After seeing his response of "no", she nods eagerly. "Of course, cast it, TOBIAS! I trust you!"
TOBIAS begins to cast his spell, tossing a pinch of spell components in the air and weaving his hands and body in the arcane motions that seem to cause the air to blur and ripple. His voice calls out the harsh, whispering words that seem to vanish the moment they leave his lips. Claudia takes a breathe... and then looks in amazement as her body changes! Muscles ripple and her shirt rips at the shoulders as her shoulders broaden. Her leg muscles harden and grow and it almost seems as if she grows a bit taller too.
"You should try some more sword or axe sparring with TAKASHI, and see if you notice a difference!" he says proudly.
Claudia gasps in astonishment, then she laughs! "Master! Let's see how I can fight now!" she says. TAKASHI takes a stance in preparation, and just as he seems to be about to say something... perhaps a warning... Claudia swings with her club... rather - she SWINGS - and TAKASHI goes flying! He lands a few feet away with a sickening crunch as his arm breaks and he groans in pain... holding his ribs where the club impacted the shield and pushed it back into his body. He spits blood.
21 Sep
TAKASHI: "By the gods, woman. That was some swing!"
TAKASHI tries to smile to let Claudia know that he is not mortally wounded, but smiling only allows more of the blood to drip from the corner of his mouth. He grimaces in pain and tries to lay as still as possible until help arrives.
"MASTER!" Claudia shrieks in horror, dropping her club and rushing over to the fallen warrior. He gasps a bit and manages to say " ... call ... CALLIN ... " and then coughs up more blood.
Claudia whirls around in a panic, her eyes falling on TOBIAS. A quick flash of a myriad of emotions cross her face, and then seems to solidify in anger. "Take this away from me, TOBIAS! Look what your spell did!"
21 Sep
TOBIAS frowns and rushes up right behind Claudia, kneeling down, saying "TAKASHI... Takashi I'm sorry, are you ok?" until he hears him speak a bit. "Claudia, I'll... I'll try to let the enchantment fade... even if it doesn't, it'll go away on its own in a few hours... I'm so sorry, I should have warned Takashi to keep his guard up! Let's go find CALLIN..." Then he acts in accordance to his words.
21 Sep
"A few hours?!" she says in an indignant voice. "A few HOURS!?!" She closes her eyes to keep tears from falling.
21 Sep
Is this a spell that Tobias can dismiss at will? If so, he will.
21 Sep
It's not. A concentration based spell, yes, you could dismiss. Something that alters the physical makeup of someone else? Nope... it's an hour per level... so 4 hours later....
"Go get The Priest. I'll wait here with Master..." she says in a choked voice.
21 Sep
"Ok. Don't worry Claudia, It's not your fault, and I've seen Takashi take much, much worse than this and bounce back just fine! I'll be back as soon as I can with CALLIN!" He says that last at a shout, already running towards where Callin is most likely to be found at this time of day.
21 Sep
CALLIN can be found at the shrine, talking with people, while doing general upkeep. Doing his part to keep the village clean and open. As TOBIAS runs up CALLIN will smile. "Ah TOBIAS, you seem in quite a hurry, what can I do for you?"
21 Sep
"It's TAKASHI...", TOBIAS puffs, out of breath, "he's hurt... come quick!" He gives a little tug on CALLIN'S wrist to get him started, then turns, ready to run back the way he came.
21 Sep
CALLIN: "By the LIGHT!" Callin blurts out as he starts running with TOBIAS. when he sees the broken TAKASHI, he sprints even faster to his friends aid and kneals quickly beside him and casts Cure Light wounds. "May the Light shine upon you, may in bind and heal that which is damaged. May it shine upon you in the days and nights of healing to follow." CALIN wil lay his hands upon his friend.
When CALLIN is finished ( he will cast multiple castings if required ) he will turn to TOBIAS. "TOBIAS, what exactly happened here? Did a band of ORCs stroll into the village?"
21 Sep
"Well, no..." Tobias glances down at the distraught Claudia, then quickly back up to CALLIN, "I was testing out a new spell, one what could help us when we do have to fight against the orcs... I tried it on myself first yesterday, of course, to make sure it's not harmful... anyway, they were sparring, and there was an accident... it's my fault though, I should have warned TAKASHI about it!"
21 Sep
CALLIN "Good to see you are taking responsibility for your actions. YOu carry great power TOBIAS, be wise and mindful how you use it! Fortunatly for you, TAKASHI is not unlike a mountain, strong and sturdy. He will be fine." CALLIN pauses then adds "It would be best to avoid casting spells on people in the Village until you have greater control. We don't need another witch hunt."
21 Sep
Claudia remains by TAKASHI's side, watching as CALLIN's prayers and chants work their miracle and the wounds begin to visibly heal. He stands after some time, letting out a small sigh as some of the damage remains.
She listens to TOBIAS explain what happened to CALLIN silently, but then bursts into tears as he stands. She stiffly bows to him and runs off, pushing aside anyone who wants to comfort her (and with her magically-enhanced strength, it's quite a push!)
-----
That evening, both of Claudia's parents, Ilya and Marc, come to visit TAKASHI at the manor as he rests, recovering from the day's events. They bring a meal with them and express their apologies.
"She won't come out of her room, she is inconsolable." Ilya says softly. "She finally is herself again, with the enchantment that the young man cast on her. She told us not to be angry with him, but ... he should not do such things to people here!"
Marc nods. "We hope you will be well, Sir Takashi? Claudia has been ... a difficult daughter, but your training has helped her so much. Although I would rather she not be a soldier, the focus has been a welcome change. We hope you will continue to guide her."
21 Sep
TAKASHI: "She was not aware of what could happen, so I can and won't find any fault in her actions. She and TOBIAS are both young, and lack much experience, as compared to us 'older folks'. Please tell her that she'll have to do better than that to get rid of me as a teacher!
She has taken to her training like very few I have ever seen. 'Focus' is an apt word for it, and she seems to have it in abundance. Most folk who express an interest in training quickly change their minds after their muscles begin to ache, and the bruises continue to take their toll. But Claudia is very different, and it has been a joy to teach her, something I didn't think I'd ever get to experience again in my lifetime.
As for TOBIAS, please remember that he is young as well. The things we have seen, some of which have been very close to this home, require an approach that most people would not dare to examine. Sometimes evil can not be smitten by force of arms alone, and must be faced with the aid of the divine or sorcerous arts. Know that I would not travel with him if I thought he would ever harm this village, or Claudia, intentionally. And if I ever did get that feeling, it would not end well."
22 Sep
They both nod gravely at your words. "Thank you, Sir Takashi, again.. and we hope you will feel better soon!" Ilya says.
Upon passing TOBIAS, they are civil, but curt. "She is fine... recovered after... the thing you did to her." Ilya says in an icy voice.
"We will let her know you asked about her." Marc says in a stern voice. The two say little else and leave the manor.
21 Sep
TOBIAS sticks out his tongue at their backs as they leave, then grins to himself.
-----
In the brief moments during the many days of rain that TOBIAS happens to catch sight of Claudia, she refuses to talk to him, instead turning away and avoiding him. In training with TAKASHI in one of the barns, Claudia seems to be somber now, focusing on the training and going even harder than she has done before.
21 Sep
TOBIAS is sorry about what happened, but other than making sure she doesn't take the blame for it, he's not sure what he should do. He thinks about how she looked when it was over, and decides to try and scrape together enough gold to replace the shirt that was torn when he cast the spell on her.
(This will bring us up to the 17th day, in terms of this particular situation.)
21 Sep
CALLIN will find TOBIAS after things have calmed down a bit. "TOBIAS do you have a moment? I know that today was ...." CALLIN pauses searching for the right word "Interesting. And I know you are truly sorry for what happened and you have appoligized profusely. But I think you need to realize that Actions speak far louder than words, and sometimes an apology isn't enough. Your heart was in the right place, but your actions will put seeds of darkness in the thoughts of those in the village. I would suggest refraining from using magic in the village eye for the time being, and instead make yourself helpful around the village to show your support in what they need. Perhaps you and I could help fix up the Manor. Repair some of the holes in the roof, ect. and extent that courtisy to some of the farmers in the village. What do you think?"
21 Sep
TOBIAS gives CALLIN an incredulous look, complete with raised eyebrow, when he suggests not using magic in the village, as if the priest had just asked him to stop breathing for a couple of weeks. But when Callin finishes, the young man nods and says, "I've already been doing what I can to fix up the manor. I've never been much good at fixing holes in roofs, but I can try... the farmers will especially appreciate that, what with all the rain we're having. If too much rain gets into the barn..." Tobias suddenly looks up at Callin, then quickly away and changes the subject: "Well, one good thing, I know for sure that my spell works now, and it's really strong! I should probably just cast it on TAKASHI now though, or maybe you if you want to... you'll just have to make sure that your armour isn't on too tight, and you wear loose clothes..."
22 Sep
CALLIN smiles at TOBIAS' enthusiasm. "Ah the Light does indeed shine bright in your soul TOBIAS! Nothing seems to diminish that! Just remember that just because you can use magic doesn't mean that you always should. Right now there is no reason for any of us to be able to hit like a large Oxen. And TAKASHI is on the mend, so it would be best to hold that spell for when it is truly needed." CALLIN looks at the young man and places his hand on his shoulder. "But what is needed now, is pluggin holes in the roofs of the manon and farmhouses. Serving the community, is just as important as protecting them from danger. As for not being good at it, sounds like you just need more practice, and to have some faith in yourself! Come, I will help you practice"
22 Sep
TOBIAS shrugs. "I always wait until a spell is needed before I cast it..." He looks thoughtful though as CALLIN continues. "Oh, I know how important it can be to plug the holes. It's not that I didn't have enough practice at it, it's just I was too little. But if it's needed that much... hmm, maybe there's a spell I can learn what would do that..." He'll head out with Callin to see where they can lend a hand.
20 Sep
CALLIN tries hard to remain humble while dealing with the small bit of fame around the village. He enjoys being called "The Priest" as it fills him with a sense of pride. He does his best to turn that pride into resolve and good sermons of the Light for the village. CALLIN will entertain those seeking his attention as well. Although he will take it slow as the life of an adventurer has a tendency to pull one away rather frequently. He doesn't want to leave someone hanging as it were. Upon receiving the letter from Maria, CALLIN is beaming. Above just about all others in the Temple, he wishes to do well by Maria. CALLIN sees her as a true representation of what the Light should be. Real, not full of politics and grasping for power. Just someone wishing to do well by man, and make the world a better place when they leave thier mark.
CALLIN will gather the group in the Manor "This rain just seems to never quit. I feel like it is draining the moral of the town. Any ideas on how to improve it? I would like to make a trip to the Temple. I need to replenish my Holy Water, and it might be a good idea to check in with the Merchants Guild. But I would not want to have us leave while the town's moral is low."
26 Sep
18th Day of Summer
The clouds have lifted, finally. The partial clearing of the previous week allowed the countryside and paths to become less treacherous and by the 18th day, some travel is possible, at least to get to the main road, which probably has fared better from the weather.
As you leave the town and strike out east along the muddy track to the main road, you see an odd site to the north, in the direction of the Athenum. It seems as if Apsuna's flock is circling in the sky. You even see her large form in the sky. You are not close enough to know what is going on, but it's clear that their location is much closer to you than where the Athenum is.
What will you do?
26 Sep
What will you do?
26 Sep
TOBIAS: "They wouldn't have left the Athenum unless there was something really bad going on there... would they? Is there any way we can signal to Apsuna, to let her know we're here?"
26 Sep
CALLIN: "We should head in that direction. She could be signalling us of something coming. If they are that close it could be a warning for Appleton."
26 Sep
TOBIAS takes a worried look at the muddy ground they'd have to cover once they left the main road to reach Apsuna. "Do you think it's ok to ride that way?"
26 Sep
CALLIN: "I have no idea if it is safe to travel that way. But I know that Apsuna has been a friend, and if they are circling, we should investigate and aide if need be."
26 Sep
TAKASHI: "Agreed. You don't see her flock stirred up like this unless something of interest is happening!"
26 Sep
ATACIUS: "Let's see what stirred up our feathery friends. I just hope it's not the Orcs marching on us!"
26 Sep
It is a slow slog towards the circling birds, although they also seem to be moving somewhat in your direction. After some time, you're close enough to see that the birds are circling over a group of figures, dressed in black robes, who seem to be retreating from the birds. They may be carrying something between them, you are far enough away (roughly 300 yards) that it is hard to tell. Everyone once in awhile, one of the smaller or medium sized birds will dive down towards the figures, who seem to wave weapons to drive the attacker off.
26 Sep
ATACIUS: How many robed figures do we see? Are they of foot or mounted?
26 Sep
It's hard to tell. Between ten and twenty, perhaps. A few are mounted.
26 Sep
TAKASHI: "If APSUNA and her flock are harassing them, we should probably lend a hand. Let's focus on the mounted ones first, as they are surely the most dangerous."
TAKASHI will ready his sword and shield, and make sure he is well seated in his harness. He pats his horse's neck, and soothes him before the charge.
26 Sep
TOBIAS' eyes go wide as he sees TAKASHI draw his sword. "Takashi, it looks like a big group! Maybe 10 or 20! Do you want me to cast my new spell on you first?"
26 Sep
TAKASHI: "If you have it ready, perhaps this would be a good time to test its effectiveness against our enemies... On the other hand, let's wait until we know they are going to fight. No sense wasting your skills when not needed."
26 Sep
TOBIAS nods in agreement and gets his reins ready to charge his horse.
27 Sep
CALLIN nods to the rest of the group. Lifting his Hammer and shield so they are ready. "Shall we introduce ourselves?"
27 Sep
ATACIUS digs a bullet from his pouch and readies his sling.
28 Sep
GRAIAN will ready Sleep
28 Sep
As you get closer, it's clear that these black-robed figures are in disarray and near panic. They are human. For some, their robes are in tatters. There are four horses and the riders have what appear to be wounded passengers clutching to them. You would guess there are 14 in total. They are shouting and yelling and trying to escape the flock. They don't appear to be overly armed, you catch glimpse of a dagger here and there, nothing unusual for travelers on the road.
A couple of them - a man and a woman, catch sight of your heavily armed party.
"Oh please, help us! They won't stop attacking us! Please help!" the woman begs in a frightened voice.
2 Oct
CALLIN will ride forward to the woman. "What have you done to agrivate the flock? They only attack for good reason"
2 Oct
She runs up to you. There are bloody scratches on her arms and she seems genuinely terrified.
"Oh please, help us! They're monsters! They attacked us! Zolos may already be dead! Please!" she begs, almost incoherent in her fear.
Some more gather around you all. Several continue to flee, and the birds continue to dive at them and attack. The fleeing scream and yell in fear, waving their arms to keep the birds away.
2 Oct
CALLIN will call to Apsuna "What have these people done? Have they attacked you? Are you in danger?"
2 Oct
While CALLIN is trying to get Apsuna's attention, TOBIAS is frowning and looking at the newcomers, trying to figure out what's going on. He'll nudge his horse closer to the woman, trying to get a closer look at her and maybe spot something that will give a clue who they might be.
2 Oct
ATACIUS watches the ones on horseback.
2 Oct
GRAIAN will wait with Atacius and watch the ones that have come around the group, waiting for some sign of who they are or what they are planning.
2 Oct
It could be the noise or the distance, but Apsuna doesn't seem to react. She is flying fairly high up.
The woman gasps and turns to the man. "They know these monsters! They're trying to talk to them!"
She blanches in further panic and stumbles backwards from you. "RUN!" she screams.
The man grabs her, looking in fear at you all, and he backs away as well.
TAKASHI, aside from black robes, the occasional dagger and a backpack here and there, it's hard to tell much more about these humans. They do not seem to have any symbols or heraldry or markings. The equipment appears basic, the horses seem normal nags and riding horses - nothing suggesting military or organized activity.
By now, with the realization that you are not going to protect them, the black-robed humans start to move away from you all as well.
As TOBIAS nears the woman, who is backpedaling, she looks at him and for a moment, they are staring into each others' eyes. Her fear subsides for a moment and it is almost as if she recognizes him, and he recognizes her. She gasps and starts to point, but at that same moment, a bird comes down, screeching and flapping its wings. The man grabs at the woman and they break away to run. She keeps glancing back at TOBIAS and tries to get the man to look at the young mage, but to no avail.
2 Oct
CALLIN will turn to the group "I can't get Apsuna's attention, What should we do? They seem like common folk, but I don't think Apsuna gets involved with humans on the regular basis. I would assume they provoked this somehow, even if unintentional."
2 Oct
TOBIAS isn't listening, he's staring off at the woman, lost in thought. There's something about her, she seems...
The loud screech of the bird overhead brings him back to the present, and he sees it flapping down, looking like it's going to attack... Without further thought, TOBIAS begins to cast a spell on the area around the man, woman and bird, hoping to put all three to sleep.
5 Oct
Is there anyone that can be identified as "leader" of this group?
5 Oct
Rizzoma ate my answer - ATACIUS, it's quite a disorganized rabble, but the four on horseback seem to be doing the most "leading", if yelling at people to "Get back to the road!" can be considered leading.
6 Oct
CALLIN will shout at TOBIAS " What are you doing? " Not quite knowing what the young man is planning on casting.
6 Oct
TOBIAS stops, eyes still locked on the woman but mindful of the screeching bird overhead as he yells back to CALLIN, "That woman what's running away, I need to talk to her, and that bird is coming down to kill her! I want to put them to sleep and stop this!"
6 Oct
CALLIN will rush on his horse toward the woman and man and dive off his horse and attempt to tackle/subdue them. ( He isn't trying to hurt them, just trying to keep them from being ripped to shreds by the birds, but kept alive for TOBIAS, while at the same time not attacking the birds and should they need to be handed over they could be )
9 Oct
CALLIN lands on the two, knocking them over and causing the bird to veer off. It flaps back up to the flock and you notice that they are beginning to drift back in the direction of the Athenum.
The two stand up shakily. The man open and closes his mouth a few times, unsure of how to respond. The woman is peering over CALLIN's shoulder at the sky, watching as Apsuna and her flock move off.
"They are leaving!" she says. "We are saved!"
She looks directly at TOBIAS. "And it is him who has saved us."
9 Oct
TAKASHI, still mounted on his horse, will slowly mosey over to see what the struggling people were carrying, with a frown on his face.
9 Oct
Only a few of them seems to have a pack of any sort. They seem more like travelers in their equipment than anything else that you've seen. Aside from the wounded behind the riders, the horses are not carrying anything else.
9 Oct
TOBIAS looks back and watches in wonder as Apsuna's flock turns and flies off. Then he turns back and urges his horse forward towards the woman, who he watches with a suspicious look on his face.
9 Oct
CALLIN stands and looks at the two. "Now that we have the situation settled down a bit, lets find out why Apsuna's flock was stirred up." He then looks to TOBIAS "Ok TOBIAS, you can talk to her now."
10 Oct
TOBIAS nods and says to the woman, "Why were you looking at me like that when we passed? And why were you pointing at me?"
10 Oct
In response, the woman turns to the others.
"It is He." she says and they all turn to look at TOBIAS. The wounded slowly get off the horse, as do the riders. They all stand for what is only several heartbeats, but seems like eternity, then as one, they take a knee and bow their heads.
The woman kneels as well.
"It is You. We were summoned. We apologize that it took too long, but we have come. That which was taken, will be ours again!"
They all echo that last sentence. "That which was taken, will be ours again!"
She stops talking and they all remain kneeled, facing in TOBIAS's direction.
10 Oct
As they kneel, TOBIAS shoots a baffled look over at CALLIN and shrugs his shoulders.
10 Oct
CALLIN speaks. "What is it that was taken from you? And how do you know young TOBIAS here?"
10 Oct
The woman does not respond, but remains kneeling, eyes down. By her appearance, it looks like she's waiting for an answer or acknowledgement from TOBIAS.
10 Oct
CALLIN turns back to TOBIAS. "Seems like you will be the one figuring this out TOBIAS"
10 Oct
GRAIAN comes over to Tobias, "Does this mean anything to you?" he asks him
10 Oct
ATACIUS turns his atention to Apsuna's flock and watches their movements as they talk to the robed people.
10 Oct
TOBIAS shakes his head and says softly to GRAIAN, "I thought I recognized that woman from somewhere before, but I don't know what they're talking about..." Then louder, he says to the kneeling men and women, "Um... you can stand up now!"
11 Oct
"As you wish." the woman says and stands, the rest following her.
"We've journeyed to find you. We were summoned, called by Him to find you. We are here, to be what you need us to be. The library, it is overrun by those creatures. They sought to drive us away, and we were not strong enough to prevail against them. Is it your wish that we try, or will you take us to the library?"
12 Oct
TOBIAS starts rubbing his forehead with the palm of his hand. "Him?" he groans to himself, "Oh, no..."
12 Oct
CALLIN turns to TOBIAS "Who are they speaking of? Who is this Him?"
12 Oct
“It’s…”, TOBIAS starts to answer CALLIN, but stops himself and looks at the robed men and women. He dismounts his horse and walks it over a bit towards them, brushes back some of the hair from his face and says to the woman, “The… library, it’s off-limits for right now. Those birds what are outside, they’re guardians of it. Leave them alone, and they’ll leave you alone. Let me talk with my friends a little and decide what to do next.”
12 Oct
The woman looks at you, her face impassive. At your words, she nods brusquely.
"Your servants and pets?" she asks.
12 Oct
TOBIAS: "Er, yes... yes, of course."
He turns and gives a pointed look at his companions, moving out of earshot of the robed men and women and obviously hoping to talk to the others privately.
(Assuming we get together to talk) TOBIAS: “It’s the man from my dreams! Remember, like I was telling you before, TAKASHI? He wants me to go back to the Athenum, and I think he sent those people to make me!”
12 Oct
CALLIN: "TOBIAS, no one can make you do anything. We all have free will. Choose what you want to do on your own accord. Who is this person from your dreams?"
12 Oct
TOBIAS' eyebrows rise and he nods towards the woman. "Does she look like she has free will? CALLIN, I think she'd roll over and bark if I asked her to!"
12 Oct
CALLIN: "That doesn't mean she lacks free will. She is the one choosing to follow your command. You have yet to punish her for not listening. That being said, whoever sent her might treat her quite differently"
12 Oct
TAKASHI (to CALLIN and TOBIAS): "If these people are sent from the man in your dreams, I do not know that we want them anywhere near Appleton nor the Athenum. How to we get rid of them?"
12 Oct
CALLIN (to TOBIAS and TAKASHI ) : "Perhaps we have htem take us back to 'HIM'?"
12 Oct
TOBIAS (to CALLIN and TAKASHI): "I don't think 'Him' - he called himself 'Mage' in my dreams - I don't think Mage is in a real place, just in dreams, maybe that's how he 'summoned' them. And I don't think they're going to leave us alone until we go to the Athenum. He wants me to do something for him in there, I just know it, and I hate it when somebody tries to tell me what to do! That's why I shot the fire in his face..."
12 Oct
CALLIN: "Then we won't go to Athenum, and we will tell them that they will not return either. They stated that they have come to serve you. Perhaps we can use them to help tend to Appleton?"
12 Oct
TAKASHI: "I trust Apsuna and her flock more than these folk. If there is a reason they drove them away from the Athenum, perhaps we should go speak with her before leading these folk back towards Appleton. It may be leading the wolf into the sheep pen."
12 Oct
CALLIN: "Very true. We should know these peoples true intentions"
12 Oct
TOBIAS nods. "If we could just trust them, maybe they could help build up and protect the village - we were looking for someone what could do that - but if they come from Mage, I don't know... and what would the folks in Appleton think?" His face grows sour, imagining their reaction.
"Maybe someone could ride to see Apsuna real quick and talk to her, while the rest of us stay here and talk to them; maybe we'll find out more..."
13 Oct
GRAIAN has been watching and listening to the conversation speaks up, "Tobias, this is a little disturbing and has all the signs of chaos, you need to be careful and I think we should talk more about this. However, for now we need to understand why Apsuma and her flock were attacking these people, I will go and speak to her. You need to learn all you can from these people and why they have been sent here."
13 Oct
TAKASHI: "I will go with GRAIAN as well. Watch these folk TOBIAS, as I do not feel that all is right here..."
13 Oct
ATACIUS, who was eating an apple while listening to his friends, speaks as he gives his pony the core. "Maybe TOBIAS should be the one talking to Apsuna. It would show these people he can calm the birds. Gain face, show them his in charge and all that, right? As for having this folk in Appleton, I don't know. Maybe in one of the nearest abandoned farmsteads?"
13 Oct
CALLIN: "ATACIUS you raise a good point, I only fear that these people will not leave TOBIAS' side, and I'd prefer not walk them back to Athenum not knowing what they would do."
15 Oct
TOBIAS takes a deep breath and walks back to the woman in robes. He tries to give his voice the sound of as much authority as he can: "I'm sending some of my servants to, ah... see what the situation is like at the library and report back to me. In the meantime, I need to find out some more about you. What's your name?"
16 Oct
"Perhaps they can let your guardians know that we belong in the Library?" the woman inquires. "We did not kill any of them, fearing that they were yours. If not, we would be happy to ... help." and with that, the woman twists her fingers in a small somatic gesture and you recognize the knot of arcane power that briefly flickers around her hand.
"I am Madjida. My companion here [she nods to the man standing behind her a bit] is Zek. I am glad we found you, TOBIAS. Since you have walked the halls, since your presence called to us, we have sought the Heir. The keep and the port were little help, but we did find the location of the Library and hoped to find your trail. It seems that you and us were drawn to each other. Are you well? Is all good with you?"
16 Oct
TOBIAS: "I'm... good, I guess... Madjida. I don't need any help with the guardians, but there is a problem going on what you might be able to help me with. Right now, there's a large band of orcs nearby that I think might be a threat to... my home. How, um... how good are you and your companions at dealing with problems like that?"
17 Oct
Madjida looks back at Zek with a puzzled look on her face. Zek shrugs, then his face lights up.
"Perhaps TOBIAS has already established a demesne and wishes us to continue his training there." he suggests.
Madjida looks at TOBIAS even more carefully, a slow up and down look.
"Is that true? Have you already grown to such power?"
17 Oct
"Well, I...", TOBIAS' face reddens a bit, "I do have a place, for learning magic - is that what a demesne is? - but if we're going to do magic training, with so many of you, probably one of the abandoned farms around here would be better."
17 Oct
ATACIUS: "Yes, Lord TOBIAS has lands and power! Do not let your eyes deceive you. But remember, his power comes not only from his abilities but from his friends and the people he cares for." the littleling intercedes stepping forward. "Lord TOBIAS is a generous one, and will provide you a suitable place for your lodging and... training, but you will have to help in its repair and work for your sustenance." he adds in a firm tone looking at the man and woman who just spoke.
17 Oct
TOBIAS smiles at ATACIUS as he steps in to help. When Atacius finishes speaking, Tobias looks back at Madjida and nods.
17 Oct
Madjida does not look or respond to ATACIUS.
"He would want us to be at the Library, to clean it up, prepare it and conduct your training there. If you would be so kind as to ask your guardians to not attack us as we enter..."
The others seem to have collected themselves and are applying some first aid to the wounded and listening to the conversation.
17 Oct
"I told you, it's off limits." TOBIAS brushes hair away from his eyes, looking up at her with eyes narrowed, obviously starting to get angry. "You said you came to be what I need you to be. Right now, I need you to be someone what can protect Appleton from orcs, and then someone what can show me more magic and tell me more about the library, so that maybe someday we can go back in there. If you can't do that, you can march right back where you came from and tell Him you failed." He finishes with his arm outstretched, pointing in the direction they'd been running from.
17 Oct
CALLIN smiles at the resolve TOBIAS is showing dealing with the newcomers. He also takes a step to stand at TOBIAS' right side informing the group of newcomers he stands with TOBIAS.
17 Oct
Madjida's face darkens and her eyes narrow. She turns to Zek and snaps a command in a language that nobody understands. Immediately, he snaps a command and the rest of the group springs into action. The horsemen dismount and all of the travelers step into a formation that looks like a wedge behind Madjida. Zek is immediately behind her. Almost all of them assume poses that look very much like the prelude to casting spells.
"We were sent here to find you and assist you to the next level of your ascension, heir." she says in an icy voice. "Do not mistake that intent as if we are mere servants for you to order around like an impudent child. There has been some suspicion that you might not be worth of the Heir and power. We will take back the library and prepare it. If you are worth of that power, you would best to stay your tongue and rein in your attitude. Only when you've earned HIS approval will you be able to speak to us in that manner."
The very air around her seems to dim.
17 Oct
CALLIN: "It seems APSUNA was correct in keeping this rabble away from the Library. Madjida, what is your purpose in going to the Library? All we have seen is darkness and vile Evil."
17 Oct
She does not respond to your question, CALLIN.
17 Oct
TAKASHI, still mounted on horseback (and slowly walking away towards the Athenum), slowly turns his mount around and lines up on the end of one of the wedges. He notes the people who have dismounted, and smiles inwardly.
17 Oct
"Fine," TOBIAS says, with heat still in his voice, "I don't need folks around doing everything I say like mindless zombies, anyway. But don't you ever try to tell me what to do! And if you mess with those birds, or the library, then you can just forget about me being an heir, or ascending, or whatever else you're thinking about."
17 Oct
Madjida laughs, a mocking laugh that ends in a disappointed sigh.
"He warned us that you might not be strong enough to be an heir. Little boy, we do not heed your words as orders, so let me tell you something - in the same manner that you have addressed me. If YOU or your servants, including the one over to my right who thinks he is sidling into a good position, interfere or attack us, you will find the full weight of Power against you. Your servants will die slow, agonizing deaths to amuse us and you will feel pain such as you have never felt."
She flexes her hands again and the arcane energy dances between them.
"If you decide to abandon your childish ways and attitudes, we will be waiting. We will be watching. Perhaps you will overcome your weakness. Perhaps not. Life favors the strong and victorious. That favor must be earned."
The rest of the group are keeping an eye on all of you and almost all have flexed their fingers in pre-somatic gestures - GRAIAN and TOBIAS can see the arcane power glowing.
17 Oct
TOBIAS just stands there, watching her, still seething with anger.
17 Oct
Madjida watches you all, waiting to see what you all will do.
17 Oct
ATACIUS: "Lady, are you trying to scare us with your hokey-pokey? If you're so powerful why couldn't you defend yourselfs from the birds huh?" the littleling asks wiggling his fingers. "Now, go back the way you came. Go." as he makes a shoo shoo gesture.
17 Oct
She doesn't respond to ATACIUS.
17 Oct
TAKASHI twitches in anticipation, a snarl forming on his face. He leans his body forward, and readies himself to launch his horse forward to mow down these sorcerous bastards. He looks at TOBIAS, perhaps for the last time, and then digs his heels into his horse's flank and charges one end of the the V, drawing his sword as he closes in.
17 Oct
CALLIN: As soon as TAKASHI moves as in practiced rythem, CALLIN draws forth his hammer and shield rushing Madjida.
17 Oct
Combat with the Cultists
ROUND 1
19 Oct
DECLARATIONS
18 Oct
Positioning - based on what you wrote above. I have TAKASHI and GRAIAN at one point of the wedge/triagle, TOBIAS, CALLIN and ATACIUS at a second point.
Roughly 10'/less between T/C/A and Madjida. I'll rule 150' for TAKASHI/GRAIAN as a starting point (since they were both moving towards the Athenum at the beginning. If you feel any of this is incorrect, please let me know before we're done with this first set of declarations, because that's what I'm basing things on.
ATACIUS will draw his short sword and stay beside TOBIAS ready to fend off any robed one that tries to get him.
CALLIN: Sounds right to me. CALLIN will rush forward drawing his War-Hammer and shield and attempt to smash Madjida and her darkness back to wence it came. or something like that
GRAIAN - @Chris will also gallop towards the group, he is too far away for any spells. His aim is to get within 100' of Majida
TAKASHI TAKASHI will charge his mount towards the end of the V, and attempt to trample as many as possible while swinging his snicker-snack sword at their heads. He'll try to use slashing cavalry tactics to disrupt their formation by smashing through it!
RESULTS
TOBIAS begins chanting softly, uttering arcane words much like you’ve heard him do before to release a spell, but this time they sound harsher, more guttural than before. Smoke begins to pour out from his outstretched fingertips as his hands wave in jerky movements. His invocations grow louder and his head seems to smoulder, and his eyeballs lose all of their normal color to be replaced with a bright orange glow. For the briefest of moments, to GRAIAN and ATACIUS eyes, TOBIAS's face seems to be replaced with that of another, someone that is familiar to them…
Madjida, her hands just about to begin a somatic twist of spell casting, stops and stares in disbelief at TOBIAS.
"No... no... oh, Master, why?" she whispers and throws her hands up in supplication. The other cultists falter in their casting of spells or movement and all look in shock at TOBIAS.
The young man’s words grow to a yell, and then a scream as his arms suddenly thrust forward and each of his hands release a stream of fire, while simultaneously every hair on his head seems to erupt in flame and instantly burn away. The streams rush past Madjida and the other cultists, getting closer and closer to each other until, just behind the wedge of 14 robed men and women, they come together. There is a deafening explosion as a ball of flame erupts from that point, instantly engulfing all of the cultists in scorching red-hot fire!
TAKASHI's horse rears back in panic, neighing in complete fear!
CALLIN and ATACIUS, just starting to leap into action next to TOBIAS, feel a sudden burst of intense heat in front of them, as if they had put their faces too close to a fireplace. ATACIUS can feel his hair on his face, hands and feet start to sizzle, and CALLIN's metal armor is suddenly very uncomfortable!
The fireball detonates with a loud "THWOOOOOM!" and consumes the shrieking cultists! Those closest to the center of the blast are consumed by flames, their figures turned into lifeless charred lumps. At the ends of the wedge closest and opposite to TAKASHI, the cultists fall shrieking and burning, their cries quickly silenced.
At the tip of the wedge closest to TOBIAS, Madjida and Zek fall over, crying in pain and anguish. Zek stops moving.
Those still standing, their ears are ringing from the fireball. TOBIAS stands, swaying for a moment. His features have returned to normal.
CALLIN and ATACIUS hear him whisper "I'm not a little boy..." and his face screws up. He sinks to his knees and presses his head into the ground, clutching at the grass with his hands as he sobs, "No... no..."
Madjida chokes and wheezes out a final "... w... hy....." and her last breath rattles as she dies.
END OF COMBAT
19 Oct
CALLIN ignoring the discomfort in his armor rushes to TOBIAS' side. "By the Light TOBAIS are you ok? That was the most power I have seen you summon before."
19 Oct
GRAIAN rushes to Tobias, a concerned look on his face, "Tobias, are you OK, when and how did you learn to do that? Spells like that are not for the inexperienced." Turning to Atacius he looks at him questioningly "Did you see his face?"
19 Oct
ATACIUS gasps in ashtonishment, frozen in place by the shock of what he have just witnessed. His ears still ringing by the blast of fire, GRAIAN's voice comes like a distant echo that draws the littleling's attention to him. "WHAT!? DID YOU SEE HIS FACE!?" Realizing he's yelling he pops his ears. "I don't know what I saw, but it wasn't TOBIAS."
19 Oct
TAKASHI, after calming his mount and regaining control, looks upon the devastation let loose by TOBIAS, then looks at the young man himself.
TAKASHI: "TOBIAS, I think we need to talk about what just happened here. Not right now, but soon."
19 Oct
The young man remains down for some time, sobbing, but eventually recovers enough to raise his head and speak: "I shouldn't... shouldn't have been able to... It was Him! He's my... I'm related to him, Takashi! This power, it's in my blood..." He raises his arms and stares at his hands.
19 Oct
CALLIN: "With great power comes great responsibility. You know now that you have the power, now you must decide how and when to use it. " CALLIN looks at the carnage "Is everyone else OK? My armor feels like a forge!"
20 Oct
TOBIAS stands, looking up to really see the devastation for the first time, his jaw dropping at the gruesome scene as smoke still rises up from it. He tenderly touches his now-bald head and winces.
23 Oct
CALLIN waits for TOBIAS to take in what has happened. "TOBIAS....... TOBIAS. Say something"
23 Oct
The young man stares at the carnage for a few moments longer, then shakes his head and looks down at the ground around his feet. "TOBIAS is gone, CALLIN. I can't be him anymore. He knows that name... he knows where I live, and... he'll keep coming. I have to go away from here, far away..."
23 Oct
TAKASHI: "How many more people are we talking about, TOBIAS? How do you know this? Either way, know that you aren't alone here. You have made a home in Appleton, and I don't think it would be good to abandon it."
23 Oct
CALLIN: "TAKASHI is right. Besides TOBIAS...that is your name, that is the man you are. He can't change that. It sounds like him is just another form of Darkness we must shed some LIGHT upon. Put your Faith in the Light, let it shine upon you TOBIAS, don't fear the darkness, stand against it. And know that we will be standing at your side."
23 Oct
The young man shows signs of what might be the beginning of a smile, the first since the incident, at TAKASHI and CALLIN's kind words, but then his face grows serious again. "I'm glad... very glad, to have you as friends. But I know what I know because he's been in my head before, like he was just now today, and even if I could keep him out, he knows the name 'Tobias'. Names have power, magical power - GRAIAN can back me up on that - and I think that's why we still don't know the true name of "Him".
"He also knows that I live around the Athenum, maybe even that I'm in Appleton. He might send more mages, or... things... You saw what I did just to stop them from hurting you... what do you think might happen if he tries to hurt the village? I made a promise... to Claudia... to not hurt anyone in Appleton. I have to get away to make sure that can never happen..."
"I need a new name, and I need to go..." His worried look turns to one of hope as he turns and looks up at GRAIAN. He says, "Graian, you were planning on going to Ramathia, right? Will you take me with you?" @Chris
23 Oct
CALLIN: "If you choose to leave, then who will protect Appleton? Sir Flinigan left that responsibility to you. It is not one that should be taken lightly"
23 Oct
"I'm not. I think going away is the best thing I can do to protect the village from Him... and from me."
24 Oct
GRAIAN looks at each of his friends in turn, then returns to Tobias. "Yes there is power in a name, only you can decide what you are going to do, but know we are here together. There is much troubling you and there have been times when you have acted a little strangely, I think we all out it down to your young age. You must tell us everything, power is not just in a name, power is also found in trust and companions. We have been through a lot together, while leaving Appleton may be better for the village you cannot go alone. I am planning on joining the exploration of Ramathia and you are more than welcome to join me, I will make sure my Elven brethren do not object. However, running away does not solve anything unless it is to give yourself time to to plan. Again, tell us what you know and feel, together we can defeat Him.
24 Oct
"D-defeat Him? I guess so... maybe someday, if we have to... but we need that time, away from here. I can tell you what I know, that the dreams started after I put that book under my mattress... you know, one of the strange ones from the Athenum? I think he gets power from them somehow, or speaks from them or something... I think if we want to ever defeat him, we're gonna have to destroy..." he frowns and trails off, not able to bring himself to say it.
24 Oct
TAKASHI perks up at TOBIAS' utterance of the word "destroy". He knows how to destroy.
TAKASHI: "If these books are keeping him alive, perhaps it would be best to destroy them, and any trace of him that still might reside in those pages. I can help with this task."
24 Oct
The young man winces at hearing it said out loud, but nods reluctantly.
24 Oct
GRAIAN notices the pain this is causing Tobias, "Tobias, the longer this is left the stronger the hold He will have over you and Appleton will facve greater danger. If He gets becomes stronger inside you there is no knowing what mmay happen. Takashi, I fear the destruction will take more than a few of your mighty stikes, we will need help. Callin, I think even your Light alone amay not be strong enough, we should seek help from the Temple."
24 Oct
"Don't use that name, Graian. What's the elfish word for 'friend'... bellon? Call me 'Bellesh' for now, it's close enough. I don't know if the Temple will have the answers about how to take care of the books or get 'Him' out of my head, but we should find out... The sooner we can take care of those books, the sooner we can get out and head for Ramathia."
24 Oct
ATACIUS has been strangely quiet listening to his friends. He coughs. "TOB-BELLESH, my friend, I understand your urge to leave and go as far as possible, driving away the danger from Appleton. I really do, but I don't think it will solve the problem. In fact, my guess is it'll make it worse. Once you're gone everyone will start asking 'Where's T?', 'Why did T leave?', 'When will T come back?', and how do you know that their mention of your true name won't call 'Him' to Appleton, huh? Because, do you really think Claudia will think of you as Bellesh?" he asks. You probably never saw him speak so seriously. "I'd leave for Ramathia now if GRAIAN asks me, but I know he won't, knowing we'd be leaving behind these people helpless, without guidance or protection. Because the Orcs will come, oh they will, and I rather be here than far away when it happens. And if 'He' comes, I rather be here too. With you, all of you." He eyes glitters. "That people may not be my kin, but that place is the closest thing to a home for me now. And you may not be my kin, but you're the closest thing to a family to me. And I'm ready to fight for both of them."
24 Oct
BELLESH looks at ATACIUS for a long moment, touched and surprised by his solemn tone. Finally, he nods sadly. "I know you are. I wish I could stay, Appleton is the only good home what I've had, too. Maybe when I've had a chance to learn more, to get Him out of my head, or beat him, like GRAIAN said... but all I know is I can't be here now. Think about it - if I'm here, he can threaten the village to make me do what he wants... to make me... be... what he wants. If I'm too far away to change things, he would have no reason to come here at all. Also, maybe when I've learned more maybe I can come back and be a better protector for the village. I've done just great so far... the village's leader is dead, some of the villagers are dead from orcs, with maybe more on the way, half the village hates me, and Claudia already thinks I'm a monster..." His voice cracks a bit at that last, and you notice his eyes are watering with unshed tears. He composes himself a bit and finishes, "Anyway, I've got to go."
25 Oct
TAKASHI: "Let's get going towards Skalfier, then. We can talk with those at the temple who might best be able to help all of us get rid of this book, BELLESH. A new name and a new start - let's make it a good one!"
25 Oct
CALLIN "Indeed we can speak with Maria about the subject. I trust if anyone would know how to remove something evil from inside you, she would be the best place to start." CALLIN pauses for a moment and then looks at TOBIAS/BELLESH "Where is this book that allowed HIM in your head? We might need it to remove whatever curse has befallin you my friend." CALLIN pays very close attention to how BELLESH responds to the request.
25 Oct
BELLESH: "I locked it in the room where I put all the other books from the Athenum after the dreams started, although it... came back, once. I have all the stranger books from Athenum in there seperated from the others."
25 Oct
ATACIUS: "To Skalfier it is then...." /*sigh*/ "What are you going to do with those books? Leave it locked in Appleton? Destroy them? Take them with you to Ramathia? I say we make a huge pyre and toss them there. They're no good and have caused enough damage."
25 Oct
BELLESH winces again. "I guess we have to, but I wish there was another way..."
25 Oct
CALLIN: "That sounds good to me as well ATACIUS, but perhaps High Currate Maria will have a better idea to ensure they are truely destroyed"
26 Oct
Summer 18 continued - The Road to Skalfier
The remainder of your journey is fairly uneventful, compared to what happened in the morning.
However, as you get closer to Skalfier, you see something a bit odd. There are a lot more carts and wagons on the road, heading into the city. They are a quarter or half full of grains or vegetables or a few livestock. The chatter amongst the travelers tells the tale - the Elves have come to Skalfier! Their ships sailed into the port ten days ago and since, they have been buying provisions for the trip to Ramathia. They are hiring fishermen who have braved the open waters as guides to take them to the island city.
The northern gate to the central walled Old City and the area surrounding it is full of wagons and carts, travelers and on-lookers, all looking to get into the city center itself and the docks to see the Elven ships. You can see, from the crest of the hill as you make your way down through "Northill" neighborhood, three brightly flagged and colored large triremes sitting in the harbor.
26 Oct
The guards at the gate look completely overwhelmed, and almost relieved to see CALLIN and his holy symbol, making it easy for you to get through the gate and into Skalfier proper. The sun is setting below the mountains to the far west as you enter the walled city proper. The streets are full of on-lookers and citizens, all circulating around talking about the spectacle at the docks.
26 Oct
CALLIN will briefly stop and give a quick blessing to the guards. "May the LIGHT shine upon you, and brighten your day. Thank you for your service"
Once inside he will turn to the group. "Check our horses at the stables then head to the Temple?"
26 Oct
The stable children look very tired and harried as they take your horses. "Only a five silver per day for you and your friends, Priest!" one of them says to you. "How long ye be stayin'?"
26 Oct
CALLIN will give them 1 gold "For now I think only a couple of days, but maybe longer depending. Thank you for taking such care of our steeds. May the Light shine upon you and Lighten your day and the burdens you bear"
26 Oct
One of the children smiles at CALLIN and says in a cheerful voice "Thank ye Priest!"... they then look at the rest of you with expectant looks.... (as long as you pay the fee, go ahead!)
26 Oct
BELLESH also hands over a piece of gold.
26 Oct
GRAIAN hands his horse and a goldf piece to the boys.
27 Oct
ATACIUS hands the reins of his pony and gives the boys a gold coin.
27 Oct
As does TAKASHI.
26 Oct
As we walk through the streets towards the Temple, BELLESH begins to look agitated. He's been on crowded streets before, but now everyone seems to be looking at him, and his mind turns to dark thoughts of who else the evil mage might have sent to find him. If he sees a merchant or shop along the way that is selling one, he'll buy a cloak with a hood to put up over his bald head.
27 Oct
The tailors and related shops are to the west in the Westedge neighborhood. This main street is more of residential - for the well-to-do or connected.
At one point on the journey, he asks GRAIAN, "Do you think the elves would let us travel with them on one of their ships, to Ramathia?"
26 Oct
GRAIAN pauses briefly, "Possibly, we were the ones to find the information that has brought about this expedition, however I fear there are factions that want this to become a failed mission and then they can go to war. There is also the natural dislike by my kin of other races. I shall do my best to have all of us who wish to go join the expedition, I am sure Shaiman and the Foamfollowers as a group will support this."
30 Oct
CALLIN will continue on to the Temple and seek out High Curate Maria.
2 Nov
The Temple is more crowded than usual, with worshippers crowding the benches that surround the central pool. There are plenty of people standing as well. Several of the deacons look curiously at you all - armed and armored - entering the temple. Even more, and some of the humans nearby, gawk in surprise at an elf entering as well, and whispers can be heard, with even more people glancing over at you five. It is just after "Evenlight" (the evening sermon and prayer session) so there are some of the acolytes and adepts still gathering donations and tending to those present.
CALLIN spies a familiar face, Brianinov, moving among those seated at the edges. A quick greeting and Brianinov motions for you all to follow him into the back areas of the Temple.
"It's been a little while... I should address you as Curate now, Brother CALLIN, as that is what Maria has taken to referring you as. How are you?"
GRAIAN, you can hear the whispering a bit better than the others. Various conversations going on...
"An elf... why would he be here? Elves don't believe in the Light..."
"Look, one of the explorers is here! But he's not with his usual kind. Isn't that odd?"
"I heard one of the guides saying he heard the elves talking that they didn't have the ships they wanted and they might even hire some locals."
"Oh, I wonder if the Light has touched an elf, wouldn't that be wonderful?"
"Hmf. I hope they leave soon, and the rabble with them. So tired of the city being crowded."
BELLESH, you get a few curious looks at your lack of hair and what looks like a good sunburn all over your (visible) body.
ATACIUS, it's pretty much the same response, the slapping of a hand over belt pouches and wallets. Although there are a couple of tempting targets as you push through the crowds to follow CALLIN and Brianinov.
TAKASHI, you are given a wide berth, with your very martial appearance!
1 Nov
GRAIAN nudges Bellesh and Atacius "We bring some interesting reactions, half are in awe and the other half want rid of us!"
1 Nov
BELLESH frowns curiously at the people and asks, "How do you know? Oh..." he says, turning to glance at Graian's ears, "You can hear them, can't you? I don't like the way some of them are looking at me, too. I should go find a weaver, and buy a cloak what has a hood..."
1 Nov
CALLIN: "Brother Brianinov, it is good to see you!" Upon hearing that Maria is refering to CALLIN as Curate, CALLIN beams a bit with pride. and stumbles out some words with shock "Curate, wow such an honor.... Thank you. I am doing well. It has been interesting in my travels to say the least. The temple seems extra crowded, is there a reason for the increase? Or has the LIGHT just shone upon more people recently?"
2 Nov
"It's the elves." Brianinov explains. "There hasn't been anything like this in Skalfier ... well, in generations. Probably not since the King's Navy left here, but you'd have to ask me Pa about that. So colorful. I thought there'd be more though. Anyway, all the folks around town want to come in and see, everyone knows they're headed to Ramathia and you know how people feel about that. Folks think that the island's going to spring up anew and solve all their problems, I guess. So what have you been doing? You've not been seen in a few ten days."
He opens the door to the back area. "If it's Maria you want to see, she's resting. She's in a mood, what with all the crowds. Think she doesn't like it."
2 Nov
CALLIN: "Ahh well I will follow up with Maria later then. We have been working around Appleton mostly. I've been preaching to the followers of the Light there, as well as helping with patrols and training of the militia. And perhaps an adventure or two, just to keep us busy" CALLIN pauses "How is Bindi doing? I haven't seen her in some time."
6 Nov
Brianinov smiles. "She's doing well! She's even been elevated to Adept! Ever since coming back from her adventure with you, she's been a changed person. Even Otollum has noticed, although he acts a lot like Deneb these days."
He drops his voice to a whisper. "Now if only you could pray for a miracle that cure her butter fingers..."
Brianinov shrugs. "I think Maria would want to see you. I can ask her if you want."
The rest of you, standing near the mess hall, see that it is much busier than usual, many more laypeople are about, preparing meals or simply resting. A few look in curiosity at GRAIAN and ATACIUS.
6 Nov
CALLIN smiles hearing how well BINDI is doing. "Ahh yes please see if Maria would wish to see me." and then CALLIN drops his voice to a whisper "How are things for you hear of late? Ok?"
6 Nov
TAKASHI nods to those looking his way. He attempts to smile and not make it look like a snarl. He knows that he presents a formidable figure, and wishes to put the people at ease.
6 Nov
ATACIUS will walk towards those looking at him with outstretched hand and broad smile. "Hello, I'm Atacius Lightfoot. Have we met before?"
7 Nov
CALLIN: Brianinov shrugs. "As long as we keep out of the Lightbringers' way, and act like Otollum and Deneb are the brightest flames we've ever seen, they leave us alone. I think they all are a little scared of Maria, so they haven't done anything against her. But ... (his voice drops to a whisper as he leans over to your ear) ... there are a couple of the thugs that have said her days are numbered. I don't know what that means. Deneb intends on sending some sort of large force out to fight Delmonte. He's hiring mercenary companies to fill the ranks."
REST:
Some of the folks try to smile back at TAKASHI, but they look more than a little intimidated doing so.
The two that were looking at ATACIUS look a little non-plussed at his approach and one holds his hand tentatively.
"Hello.. ?" he says nervously. "I don't think so... I'm Robin."
A few minutes of conversation reveal that he is a new layperson to the temple, this is his first ten-day there. He seems to warm up and is genuinely curious about ATACIUS.
"Of course, me Ma and Pa always talked about their trip up north beyond the Sisters to your lands - they say they even saw the caravan city and that it was quite a sight!" he says eagerly. "Have you been there?" [DM Note: It's up to you. If you go to the wiki and check out the write up on the Duchy of Occidens, you'll see the area he's talking about described. https://the-dark-ages.obsidianportal.com/wikis/the-southern-seas-campaign ]
8 Nov
ATACIUS visage sombers a little as the man mentions the little clan lands and bad memories come back, but he quickly dismisses them. "Oh, yes, yes of course! Glad your folks could tell you about that, our kind is often seen with some distrust by yours." says the littleling reaching for any drink that's near. "And you happen to see all the Elves and their ships. Now there's something you can tell them about!"
7 Nov
CALLIN's eyes set hard when BRIANINOV suggests that some of the Lightbringer thugs want to do harm to Maria. As he whispers back. "Well if you have the chance to point them out to me please do so. They may need a reintroduction to the LIGHT"
7 Nov
GRAIAN walks around the room, duregarding the comments he hears, especially the ones suggesting "his kind" should not be in here. "My dear Bellesh, do not be concerned with what people who do not know you say about your looks. We are a strange group and where ever we go there will be rude comments and stares. You will get used to it."
8 Nov
BELLESH grunts, and mumbles "I should give them something to stare about..."
7 Nov
Brianinov gulps and nods. "Her reputation as a fierce fighter precedes her, so I think that she will be doing just as much correcting as you might. She packs quite a whallop if the stories are true."
He quickly goes into the back to check on Maria. After a few moments, he peeks through the door to the mess hall and motions for you all to come with.
"She's had some... relaxation, and she said she'll speak with you, Curate." Brianinov says as you all reach him. He has a small smile when he says the word 'relaxation'.
As you near the small room that you've visited before, you can hear her voice in a low sing-song of a rather bawdy song from the bars! It sounds like her relaxation has come in the form of liquor. Indeed, upon getting to the door, you see her sitting somewhat unsteadily in her chair, her feet propped up on her low bed, a jug of some sort on her lap. She grins a drunkard's grin at the sight of CALLIN and waves her hand.
"C'mon in, boy!" she says boozily. "'bout time you showed up with something interesting. It's only been wha'... tenday or two since you last had somefin... somefin... interestin'?"
8 Nov
CALLIN bows deeply as he enters. "Thank you High Curate. Yes it has been only a short time but many things have happened. We pushed deeper into the zombie outbreak, and while the necromancer managed to elude us, we did manage to destroy the Alter there, so hopefully they will decide not to make their way back here. We also came across some interesting robed figures that possessed great magical power. They acted like poor commoners, yet somewhat strange, asking to be taken to the Anthenum. When we refused they joined a formation to stand against us. They mentioned they were under orders of "HIM". They seemed quite powerful, but TO....umm BELLESH managed to strike them down with a spell of his own, before they could attack." CALLIN pauses to let that set in a bit. "Do you know anything about a powerful mage that refers to himself as Mage or HIM?"
5 Mar
Maria blinks her eyes and you can see that she's trying to follow along with all that CALLIN is saying, but the strong drink that you can smell from the jar has befuddled her.
"Wait... alta? Bellesh? Mage? Huh?" she takes a loooong swig of the jug and blearily shakes her head. She then takes a deep breath, then another, and another.... several minutes pass and then she looks at you and smiles in a very drunken fashion.
"c'so ya sazy that ta nerca moncer ran we-her? and now tha robey an... an... som-in named beb-llish bespelpled them? and twhere's so power-aful mage running arouw? what in ted dak hells ae you gettin into, boky?" she burbles and then looks at you expectantly.
9 Nov
After a moment, BELLESH snickers loudly, breaking the silence. He looks up at the others, a bit embarrassed: "Sorry, but when my da used to get like this, my ma would make me go fetch a pail of water. Do they have one here?"
To Maria, he says: "It's me Maria, I'm Bellesh now... I'm hiding from... Him. He must be a very powerful wizard, and I think he's connected to the Athenum, and... he's in my head," he finishes, touching his extended forefinger to the side of his head.
9 Nov
TAKASHI: "And we need a way to safely destroy his books."
5 Mar
Maria blinks a few times at BELLESH, trying to focus, then snorts a giggle. "Wha' ya hair, ying man? Wha's in ya hea'?"
She then starts leaning from side to side, looking very sleepy.
9 Nov
CALLIN smiles at MARIA "It seems the LIGHT shines bright enough around me to find darkness in all corners. It keeps me very busy....." CALLIN pauses and then adds " We have had quite a long day to get here dealing with robed figures and such. Perhaps my companions and I could rest and come back and visit tomorrow when we have gathered our thoughts?"
9 Nov
Your only answer is a soggy snore coming from Maria, her right arm falling from her lap to hang down, but the left hand still clutching at the jar.
If you ask, there is room for CALLIN to stay at the temple, but it is very crowded, so you will have a small bedroll in a corner. If you venture out and inquire at the Golden Coach, the prices are much higher and there is only one room left (it will fit 5, 2 on the bed, three on the floor) for twenty gold crowns for the night. Venturing further towards the docks, every room has been taken, filled with either sailors and fishermen eager to join the Elves as guides and help, or the curiosity-seekers, wanting to be part of the spectacle.
The Town Guard seems to be allowing some to sleep on the ground around the dock streets and (rumor has it) in the Dawnsedge neighborhood.
What will you do?
9 Nov
CALLIN will request room at the TEMPLE, but help split the cost of the Golden Coach for the others.
9 Nov
ATACIUS checks his pouch and realizes he forgot to get some coin before leaving for Skalfier. He looks back the way he came in, a smile on his face, thinking about those fat purses he saw while coming in...
9 Nov
GRAIAN seeing the smile form on Atacius's face, "Not in here my light fingered friend, while we may not be of Callin's faith we should respect his position. I have money for a room or two... That is if we can find any."
9 Nov
BELLESH digs into his own belt pouch and stares at the pitiful handful of gold and silver that he pulls out. He says to CALLIN, "Do you think there's some chore what we could do for the Temple, to earn some gold?"
9 Nov
ATACIUS gives GRAIAN that hurt look he already knows. "W-what? Are you suggesting...? How could you!?" he says mocking a distraught tone.
10 Nov
[Between all of you, deduct 20 gold - four of you can cram into the room, with CALLIN staying at the temple. If there's nothing else you'd like to do this evening, we'll move on to the next day.]
10 Nov
ATACIUS has 4 gold coins.
10 Nov
This place is damn pricey right now. TAKASHI can chip in 4 gold.
10 Nov
BELLESH has 7 gold, 11 silver. He'll throw in 4gp too if needed.
10 Nov
GRAIAN will add the other 8
12 Nov
Great! @Joseph Schnurr - that leaves 4 gold crowns for CALLIN to donate and you all are set.
I'm not hearing that anyone wants to do anything, so give me an idea of what you want to accomplish for the next day or two. If the consensus is "all seek out the Elves", I'll go with that and expand that a bit.
12 Nov
Well, we need to talk to Maria when she is sober about destroying the book also!
13 Nov
^^This CALLIN will want to follow up with Maria after WE have rested :) And 4 gp deducted.
5 Mar
Summer 19, Skalfier
"Oh, may the Light have mercy and just remove my head from my neck." Maria groans as you all arrive back at her cell. "Nobody listens when I tell them to take the bottle from me if I've had too much. I don't understand why."
She looks at CALLIN with a bleary smile. "You're here to bless with me with the miracle of a removed hangover, yes?"
After told about the book, her face draw serious. She shakes her head.
"There is a reason that the arcane and divine don't mix very often. There are prayers that may, the Light willing, remove enchantments from things, but one must be very strong in the Light to do such. What you describe doesn't sound like a simple item that has been enchanted, but a powerful artifact. Only a powerful mage could possibly imprint themselves into such a thing. Was this the only one or were there more?"
She points to GRAIAN. "He would probably know more about such things, or would know how to research them. And how to safely get rid of it. For now, I would recommend staying as far away from it as possible. Can you return it to this place you found it? The Athenum? You know... one of my teachers, Abeil, once talked about a mage's library that was a place of battle during the Guild Wars. He said it was a terrible battle and that hardly any of the mages survived. That it seems to still contain echoes of someone worries me. And you say people were called to it? That worries me even more!"
She chews on her cheek for a moment, then nods. "Yes, get that book as far away. I don't want to tell Otullum... yet. BELLESH... I thought you were called TOBIAS.... ? Anyway, BELLESH, if you keep having these dreams, try praying to the Light. Yes, I see that look on your face, but the Light believes in you... why not extend it the same?" and she smiles a warm smile at the young man.
5 Mar
CALLIN gives BELLESH a quick friendly elbow at Maria's statement to pray to the LIGHT. Kind of a "See that's what I was saying" :) Then CALLIN turnes to the rest of the group. "I think it would be best to retrun the books to the Athenum as High Curate Maria says, It would have the mystic protection of the Athenum, as well as the physical protection of Apsuna protecting her flock, and of course our watchful eye. Perhaps we can work out a deal to bring Apsuna's flock some treats in exchange for informing us of any disturbance to the Anthenum?"
13 Nov
BELLESH shoots a sour look towards CALLIN before turning back to Maria: "Maria... um, High Curate... of course I believe in the Light, I've seen Callin use it for magic many times, but it's never done much for me. It just seems weird to me to pray for magic, and besides, I've got my own magic, I just need to get better at it..."
He stops and takes a deep breath, clearly not wanting to say what he says next: "The problem is the Athenum. That's were Mage wants us to go, for some reason. He wants the place open, and for people to go in there... and I want to be as far away from here as possible, I don't want to go back there! It's like all those mages that he sent to try to get in there, the ones what I... I killed..." He frowns, looking down at his hands.
Suddenly his head snaps back up and he exclaims excitedly, "Killed! Like all those mages what died in that war you were talking about... Maria, you said that it was a mage's library, do you know whose it was? Was he the one what started that war? Does anyone know who he was?"
13 Nov
CALLIN shakes his head when BELLESH says CALLIN uses the LIGHT for magic....knowing that he has missed the point of CALLIN's attempted teachings of the Light "More work to do it seems" CALLIN thinks to himself, but now is not the time to stop BELLESH's questions.
5 Mar
ATACIUS describes to Maria the features he saw on BELLESH face, when he defended us all from dying at the hands of the black-robed mages. "Maybe there is a painting of this man... What about the room full of paintings we found in Athenum?" the littleling's face ligthens at the sudden thought.
5 Mar
Maria reaches over and puts an hand gently on BELLESH's arm. "Young man, I certainly don't expect you to draw your power from the Light. Prayer doesn't have to be for bringing answers - sometimes it's just good to say it and feel like you were heard."
5 Mar
"I've got enough people hearing my thoughts already..." BELLESH mumbles.
"The Light shines in you, just as it can shine in us all. You are a good lad, you have good friends. I don't know what you mean by that you killed them. Killing is always a dark place to go, even when you are defending yourself. The Light can cleanse you of that Darkness." she finishes.
She chews on her other cheek after listening to BELLESH and ATACIUS, you can see she is thinking hard.
"From what I remember, it was one mage who created the library. He was a wealthy mage out of Ramathia, if I'm remembering this right. He was on the side of Chaos, and it became a bastion of power during the Guild Wars. The mages opposed to Chaos attacked it. I do know my teacher said that the stories told that night was like day and it sounded like legends of the old gods fighting here on the land. The library was destroyed and I thought he said all of the Chaotic mages killed. But I don't really remember more than that." she says. "Where you CAN find out more is at the Merchant's Guild library. If anyone has information on this place, and who might have constructed it, they would! Just bring some coin, information is not free where the Guild is concerned..."
13 Nov
GRAIAN looks at the Maria, "High Curate, I do not have the power to destroy that book, but if it is Arcane magic that is needed there are some people I know who may be able to help, however, I think first we should try to identify who this Mage is."
5 Mar
Maria simply pats BELLESH's arm again and smiles at him, nodding.
She looks at GRAIAN. "I think that would be your best course. Of course, if you wish to bring the book, I will pray for the Light to banish the foul magic within, but I can't tell you what will happen. Magic is already a dangerous thing, and the divine doesn't mix well with it. But I will try. This sounds like an evil thing."
14 Nov
BELLESH asks Maria, "Do you think that there might be anything left in Ramathia, that would tell us more about Him, and who he is? You said that he came from there, if he's the same one what built the library."
14 Nov
Maria shakes her head with a wistful look. "I wish I knew. Ramathia was deserted when the Doom fell upon us. I was born shortly after, and although I heard many stories of Ramathia, it's hard to tell what might be there. I don't know if any Guild buildings would still exist. The Shriving and war happened before the Doom. I still think that the Merchant's Guild library would be a good starting place. If there's anything to be found on local history, that's the place."
14 Nov
BELLESH turns to the others. "Have any of you been to that library, or know where it is?"
14 Nov
ATACIUS: "I have and GRAIAN too. We know a clerk there, Kellina, she runs the place." says the littleling. "I bet she would like to see my map so they can update theirs..."
14 Nov
CALLIN: "Thank you as always High Curate. I think we should do some research at the Merchant's Guild before deciding our next course of action. Is there anything you need of me?"
15 Nov
Maria groans and holds a hand up to her forehead. "Only if you would hit me a few times with your mace there on the other side. By the Light, I always say NEVER AGAIN but all those people just was a bit too much. My apologies, GRAIAN, but I will be happy when things are a bit more quiet after they sail on. If you do intend on going to Ramathia, CALLIN, consider making a scroll or two before leaving. You never know when you might need a prayer or miracle to help you out. In fact, see me before you leave and I might have something for you."
She winces again. "Time to find the hair of the dog, or something else that will stop the pain!" she grumbles and gets up to show you all out of her small room.
15 Nov
CALLIN: "Ah scrolls, I never considered that. I will do that! Thank you for your Wisdom High Curate." CALLIN will exit with the rest of the group and make sure to refill his Holy Water.
15 Nov
How many vials (worth 25gp each) do you have for Holy Water?
15 Nov
I've had 3 vials in the past, but I'm not sure if I ever purchased them. I'll remove 75g from my sheet, unless these are difficult to come by and we need to RP it out...)
15 Nov
That'll work! Thank you :)
15 Nov
done! :)
15 Nov
On our way to the Merchant's Guild library, BELLESH will keep an eye out for a place to buy something cheap like a hooded cloak, or something else to put over his head.
15 Nov
Most clothing is sold in the Westedge neighborhood, where most of the industry is at. Within the walled Old City, where the Merchant's Guild building is, are higher end clothing.
16 Nov
Well, maybe someone in the Old City will take something in trade. I have a magnifying glass, a pair of pliers, a lantern...
16 Nov
Roll me 2d6, add in your "reaction bonus" (or penalty) from your CHA and let me know what you get. Let's see if the snooty merchants in the Old City want to help a poor young man...
16 Nov
Derek Daniels rolled 5, 5 on 2d6 for a total of 10
16 Nov
Mark the date, by far my best reaction roll ever...
16 Nov
Hahaha!!!! And it wasn't to seduce a member of the opposite sex either.
16 Nov
Artura forbid! :)
16 Nov
You do manage to persuade a merchant to part with an extremely fancy and well-constructed cloak for 10 gold (you can check your inventory for what you have that might be worth ten gold)...
16 Nov
I'll trade him my hooded lantern and a pint of oil for it if he'll take it. I can't think of a more symbolic way to show that the old Tobias is gone for good (and pick up a quality cloak in the process).
16 Nov
OK, done.
17 Nov
Merchant's Guild - Midmorning
"Two gold, five silver for all of you to use the library." the clerk intones, sitting at the desk in the lobby of the Merchant's Guild. The rich carpets and tapestries cut down the noise usually found in buildings, but you can clearly hear the boredom in his voice.
After payment, he hands each of you wooden discs and points to the stairs. "Fourth floor."
After ascending the stairs, you see a familiar sight, three bored clerks sitting in chairs before the heavy door that leads to the library itself. One is familiar, the woman named Kellina.
"Welcome to the library, may I see your discs please.. OH!" she says in a surprised voice. "You're back! You were here in Fall, during the Conclave. And now you're back, with the elves. That's so neat! Let's see... you wanted to know about Ramathia, if I remember correctly, doing more research? Here, let me see your discs and get you inside!" She smiles and reaches out a hand.
17 Nov
CALLIN will hand over his disc. "Quite the library indeed." Callin says as he takes in the sheer volume of books and scrolls available. ( THis is his first time here )
17 Nov
Kellina smiles broadly. "Thank you Priest! Wait till you get though the door and see our collection! I think you will be amazed. We may not be like Ramathia was, or the Royal Library in Regium, or the Great Library of Irecia, but we do just fine!"
She gathers the discs from the rest of you. "Are you ready to enter?"
17 Nov
BELLESH hands his disc over last, eyeing Kellina cautiously from underneath his hood. He nods in answer to her question.
19 Nov
ATACIUS: "Hi Kellina! You might also like to see the annotations I've made in our map since we last met." says the littleling as he hands the wooden disk.
5 Mar
Kellina smiles broadly at ATACIUS, her face lighting up.
"Really? You have found things? Wow - that would be amazing! You know, the Guild pays for information like that, and it's so much fun! I wish I could go on expeditions like that, but no... here is where I sit. Still, I get the best of both worlds. Tell me all about what you found!"
Then she catches herself. "Oh yes... admission... let me let you all in, and we'll find what you're looking for. And also a scribe who can record what you found!" she says to ATACIUS.
She pulls out a huge key from beneath her tunic and pushes it into the large keyhole in the impressive door that is before you. To BELLESH's eye, the key and lock glow just a second with arcane power. Kellina carefully unlocks the door, and sounds of gears turning and bolts withdrawing come from the walls. Then the door opens.
She takes three of you and one of the male clerks into the small antechamber. To GRAIAN, ATACIUS and BELLESH, there is a strong feel to the air. The mages recognize it as a high level spell in effect. The small door opposite appears ordinary.
Kellina hands you back the discs with the same warning as before "Keep these on you at all times... the room does not like intruders."
She shuts the large door behind you, and a small candle flickers away. She takes a different key out, unlocks the smaller door and holds it open for you all.
The view beyond... is a wondrous view to CALLIN's and BELLESH's eyes. The ceiling is probably twelve feet high, and there are shelves along the walls and interspersed around the room that are crammed full of books, ledgers, scrolls, papers, folios, journals and all sorts of loosely bound and tightly bound books. The smell is a thick musty odor. There are reading chairs and tables spread out in the middle. Crystals in the ceiling let the sunlight in, and enclosed globes of radiant light act as lamps and lightsources for the tables and chairs.
It does seem as if this room is larger than the space you thought it was in. Much larger.
Kellina repeats the same thing for the remainder of the party, and now you are accompanied by her and a clerk.
"Now... what are you gentlemen looking for?" Kellina asks.
20 Nov
BELLESH is looking around in awe and joy at seeing so much knowledge collected in one place, but will recover enough to answer Kellina's question: "We, uh... we want to learn more about Ramathia."
20 Nov
"Ramathia!" Kellina exclaims. "EVERYONE'S interested in Ramathia, what with the Elves here. The Masters themselves have been here, reading up and even taking books and papers out of the library for meetings and discussions."
She looks around and drops her voice. "I hear they are worried with so few ships going there. The last time someone tried an expedition in the forties, only two came back. It was all hushed up, and the Guild acts like Ramathia is just a forgotten, abandoned place."
"Anway..." she says as she brightens up. "We have the old guides to the city, lots of interesting books on history and such. You'll love it! What exactly do you want to know?"
20 Nov
BELLESH: "Well, history I guess, and the history of the Athenum, too. Specifically, we're looking to learn about a mage what came from Ramathia, then built the Athenum library. We want to know more about him, and about what happened to him and the Athenum, after." He looks at his companions to see if he's left anything out.
20 Nov
CALLIN nods in support of BELLESH. "Yes Ramathia, as well as anything we can find on the Athenum would be most helpful"
5 Mar
Kellina wrinkles her nose and closes her eyes, deep in thought.
"If I remember correctly, you (she points to ATACIUS) asked about the Athenum the last time. I believe I found something in Scribe Ressel's Reviews of Important Gatherings In Occidens of the Mages Guild." She grins. "The Guild loves people who can remember such details. We're almost living indexes, you know."
She frowns. "There really wasn't much written, but since I remember where that was, let me go get it."
She dashes off, and you see far away, a ladder move, her figure dashing up it. She retrieves a book, places it carefully in a shoulder bag, clambers down and dashes back to you. She flips open the old, decaying book carefully and flips a few pages slowly. "Aha! Yep, this is what I showed you. Right here.." and she points to some faded writing.
"... Grand Master F'shal hosted a symposium on the efficacies of hostile magicks versus more passive magicks. The symposium, held at Mage Shalesh's new library located north of Skalfier, featured some of Shalesh's apprentices demonstrating several of his newer techniques. Shalesh has been known to dabble into more dark magicks thank F'shal is comfortable with, but it was an impressive demonstration, and more impressive were the number of tomes located at this "Athenum". Skalfier, the port city to Ramathia, has never been known as a hub of magickal knowledge, that belonging to the Diamond City of Irecia, and the Kingdom Center, but Shalesh has clearly established a fascinating repository of knowledge. I will be returning to investigate some of his new directions ..."
She thinks for a moment and laughs. "Ramathia history is indeed a popular subject. I have basics on the history, but the more detailed tomes have already been detailed for the Masters or for the Elves who are having copies made."
She thinks about BELLESH's other question. "Shalesh... that's not a name I recognize, but history of the Mage's Guild isn't my area. We could research it, but there would be a nominal fee and ..." she suddenly breaks off and looks behind you.
And you all turn to see the smiling face of Marceau behind you. "No, no, clerk Kellina, please continue." he says.
She nods, looking at him warily and then continues "... as I said, there would be a fee for the research and any materials that we would need to obtain. One hundred gold crowns as a deposit for a ten-day's work." She peeks behind you again to look at Marceau.
He laughs. "Don't expect me to pay for it. These gents are good for their gold, though, that I can vouch for."
Kellina nods and looks at you. "So, what do you say? Do you want us to look into this mage Shalesh and what is known about him?"
22 Nov
BELLESH goes a bit pale as Kellina speaks, and he whispers to himself, "Stop saying his name..."
21 Nov
GRAIAN smiles at Kellina's enthusiam, "Yes Kellina that would be very useful, thank you, the more we know about this mage the better." He looks in his pouch and frowns a little, "Perhaps we could put a deposit on 5 days work for now?" He pulls out 50GP.
22 Nov
"There are some old books we found..." BELLESH says cautiously, "could we bring them here, to see if the Merchant's Guild would want to buy them for the library?"
5 Mar
Kellina looks as if she's about to answer "no" to GRAIAN, with a shake of her head, but Marceau interrupts.
"Clerk, I'll cover the rest for them." he says and she stops her answer and nods. "As you wish, sir." She looks back at GRAIAN and BELLESH. "Come back in a tenner and we'll show you what we have so far."
"And yes!" she returns to looking happy at BELLESH's question. "We love seeing old books and we do pay a very competitive rate for them. Knowledge is power! Much more than coins and credit. Just bring them in and I'll take a look at them."
A scribe comes up at that moment and looks at Kellina who points to ATACIUS. "He has some updates for our maps, take him to the map area and record his changes for evaluation. Let me know what they are worth." The scribe motions to ATACIUS to follow her.
(OOC: ATACIUS - what will you be showing the scribe to add to their maps?)
25 Nov
ATACIUS will follow the clerk and show her his anotated map. "Hi Marceau!" he says as he walks by.
27 Nov
@Gabriel Perez Gallardi - what specific things are you going to show them on your map to add to their maps? If you want to go OOC on this, that's fine. I need to see how much you might get paid.
27 Nov
ATACIUS will show all his notes in the map and, apart from what those are worth, he will try to negociate a percentage on any results the Guild might obtain from future explorations on those places.
27 Nov
I get that, my friend, but I need you to give me specifics - like "I found a blah blah here, about a days walk north of blah blah" and we'll see if they have that. :)
27 Nov
ATACIUS unfurls his map and notes over the table and start pointing at different places as he speak. "All righty then, see here? There are Orcs there hidden in those highlands. I thought Delmonte was there because of this caravan attack near the Wayfarer's Inn ruins, but it's Orcs! We found a shirne in this abandoned thorp. See this? I got it from there (briefly showing the clerk the 3 leather-wrapped stones and the bone charm before putting them away). And there's this worn path from Silent Hill into the mountains and then another towards Mount Keep, which was full of Orcs. They're coming and going up and down that path, and getting bolder by the day. I don't know Orc Watch but I bet it is too. Most of the abandoned homesteads around Appleton are probably infested with Damned. We cleared a couple of them too. Do you have something to drink?" the littleling makes a pause. "Anyway, I bet Delmonte is holed up here in Dawn's Keep (he's not here because *duh* Orcs, so he must be in this area) and Roughlands Watch? Oh, that place is teeming with spiders, got that from a top source, you know? Oh, I almost forgot, there's the Athenum. Phew! Strange and spooky place if there's one, it should be avoided at all costs and never mess with the giant bird and its flock that guards it. But, between you and me, we befriended that beast, so if anyone wants to get near that place it should come to us first, OK?" the littleling ends his account and looks expectantly at the clerk. "Good stuff, huh?"
27 Nov
The scribe nods while writing extremely fast, far faster than ATACIUS has ever seen anyone write. It's as if she's writing everything that comes out of ATACIUS's mouth.
"Is there anything else?" she asks when ATACIUS pauses to take a breath. "Yes, this is very good information. Do you have layouts of the hamlets you mentioned and of Mount Keep? We've not had anyone visit for awhile. And of the Athenum - we don't have much information on that, did you map the interior?"
27 Nov
ATACIUS: "How did you just...? Layouts you say? Well, yes, sure let me check my notes... Here, this is where we found those Damned inside boarded homes. And here's where we found that gruesome altar. And this is how the keep looks like now. See here's a lot of rubble, that's where we came in, round the tower. And it opened to this courtyard, where they were waiting for us. Here's the entrance to the tower, kinda ruined you know? We didn't have time to explore this side because the drums started and we got out as fast as we could. No Orc survived though." he says with a wink. "As for the Athenum, well I have to check my notes with my colleagues. Don't want to give the Guild something inaccurate right?"
28 Nov
The scribe makes more notes and nods. "I can offer you 25 gold crowns for the information you've brought, and another fifty when you bring good maps of the Athenum."
28 Nov
ATACIUS: "Hmmm... make it 30 gold crowns now and we discuss the price of the Athenum maps when I bring them. Besides, with whom I have to negociate a percentage for us on the Guild's profits from any expedition that explores the places we provided information about?"
28 Nov
The scribe's demeanor doesn't change from it's poker-face expression. "I am quoting you the rate that the Guild is willing to pay. Do you wish to accept it or not? No percentages are given unless previously arranged for. Do you wish to not give me this information?" Her hand suddenly has a soft eraser in it.
28 Nov
ATACIUS: "Alright, alright, I'll take the 25 but let's arrange something for the Athenum maps. Can you do that?"
28 Nov
With the speed that would impress any thief, the eraser vanishes and the charcoal writing instrument returns to the scribe's hand.
"Sirrah, I can only quote you Guild rates. If you wish something different, you'll need to arrange that with a Guild Master." she says. She quickly writes out a receipt to you and hands it to you.
28 Nov
ATACIUS: "Thank you." he says as he takes the receipt. "Can you do the charcoal-eraser trick again? Is that magic or training? Where can I learn it?"
28 Nov
(OK, I'm going to give you a chance to roll to see if you've befriended her or not, you've really stuck with it! :> Roll 2d6, add any CHA bonus for "reaction" and let me know what you get.)
28 Nov
Gabriel Perez Gallardi rolled 3, 5 on 2d6 -1 for a total of 7
28 Nov
She looks at you skeptically at first, then shrugs. "We learn little tricks as scribes here at the Guild. If you wish to become one, I can put you in touch with the Hiring Scribe. You'd be the first littleling selected, if you were chosen."
1 Dec
ATACIUS: "Interesting, but maybe some other time. Thanks!" as he put away the receipt. He will cash it before leaving the Guild.
Kellina looks at the rest of you. "Now, is there anything else I can do for you?"
Marceau stands behind you all, looking patient.
22 Nov
GRAIAN nods at Marceau, "Thank you. While I am in your debt, I think we are involved in something that is much bigger than any of us expected. The rules you are used to may be changing."
22 Nov
CALLIN: Smiles at Kellina "No I think that is all we will be needing at the moment. May the LIGHT shine upon you in all that you do" Then Callin turns to Marceau. "Greetings Marceau, may you be one with the LIGHT, what can we do for you this day?"
5 Mar
MARCEAU looks on with a slightly exasperated/slightly amused look as ATACIUS hurries past, maps clutched in his hands. He turns back to GRAIAN and CALLIN and sketches a bow.
"Greetings to you both and the rest of you, although I've not had the pleasure...?" he says and he looks at BELLESH.
27 Nov
"I'm BELLESH," he says, nodding cautiously at Marceau. "You knew each other from before... before they bought the cow? They hadn't told me about you."
27 Nov
Marceau bows again to the young man. "Greetings and well met, BELLESH. I'm sure your friends will explain the circumstances of our happy meet and our common employer. In the mean time... "
"Let's go over here where we can talk in quiet." he motions to you all to follow him. Walking through the library, you get the distinct feeling that it somehow expands as you move further into the space. The smell of old, dried paper and leather is heavy in the air. The air is so still and quiet that it seems that anything above a whisper might shatter what you are looking at.
"So... you all have been busy in the time since we last worked together. You are, as you recall, employees of the Guild. I would have liked to have heard from you a bit more, but I've kept up on you since we spoke mid-Winter and you told me about the Orcs. Especially about the priest and his companions who drove away a necromancer. It has been hard to keep that quiet, what with the Lightbringers and our friends from the Keep around." he says with a slightly rueful look.
"The Guild Masters are worried that these divisions make us ripe for Orc attacks. The Marshal has finally be roused to action by Emissary Deneb and Priest Otollum and means to search the hills and broken lands for Delmonte. He's ignored our suggestions that Orcs may be massing."
"And then... the Elves actually did what they said they would do and they show up with ships to sail to Ramathia. Far fewer than was thought to come, but still, here they are."
"So with all that happening, my friends... the Guild has two very interesting opportunities for you. Ramathia or Delmonte. Which calls to you?"
27 Nov
"Ramathia!!" BELLESH blurts out.
27 Nov
CALLIN: "Where there is darkness, the LIGHT must shine, and in this world there is much darkness to break. I'm sure I can find purpose in either path."
27 Nov
TAKASHI: "And what of Appleton when we are gone? I would travel to Ramathia tomorrow, were I to know that Appleton would survive our absence."
27 Nov
GRAIAN looks ernestly at Marceau, "I must go to Ramathia, there is much to be learnt. Delomonte is but a brigand and can be handled by the Marshall's men, assuming they are half competent and remember there is a magic user among them."
28 Nov
MARCEAU shrugs at GRAIAN's comment. "Reffyndi was a capable enough commander ten years ago, but whether it is time, drink, age or rust, I know the Masters are worried that this may not go well. You have a temple sponsored band of brigands running around. You have the possibility that elements of Reffyndi's command are aligned with Delmonte. If they are knocking about the Wastes and the Orcs come marauding..."
He shakes his head in response to TAKASHI. "I can offer no guarantees, my friend. When the Orcs come, all villages and peoples bear the brunt. Have you prepared them for the possibility of combat? If so, then you've done far more than most villages. Most will run to the Keep, some will run here to Skalfier. If Appleton weathers an attack and remains standing, then it will fare better. Such was the experience in the twenties here.
28 Nov
CALLIN looks to TAKASHI: "I agree that it would be best for Appleton that we stay, however we do not know if the Orcs will come there, or pass it by. Perhaps with seeing the fortifications of Appleton, and the patrols, the Orcs may wish to move to other places to avoid losses of their own. We also owe it to our friends to keep them safe as well."
28 Nov
TAKASHI: "I understand, CALLIN. Perhaps Claudia should travel with us to Ramathia as well?"
30 Nov
MARCEAU looks at you all.
"It would seem that Ramathia is of greatest interest to you. I can't say I blame you, it has a siren call that many cannot resist. I am jealous of you, to be sure, for the Guild has decided that I am to stay here and see what becomes of the various expeditions to root out Delmonte - and to perhaps find him myself! I will have to make do without your company, but you will no doubt be busy."
He pauses and then continues.
"The Masters wish to know several things of Ramathia and they will reward you well for returning and bringing them the information. First, what condition is the city in and who lives there now? It's hard to imagine that it is completely devoid of life and there have always been rumors of pirates and smugglers using its ruins as a base. Find out of that is true! That alone will be worthy information."
"Second - the old Merchants Guild Hall of Ramathia. You might think of this as a rich, appointed hall, and it certainly has some comforts and features. But compared to what Ramathia was like, this is a hut compared to the Royal Palace! If you can somehow make it to the old Hall and see what condition it is in, what is intact, what is not -- that too would be valuable information."
"Do this and we will give you equipment that you might require now and ensure that you are on board, if the elves don't already accept you as companions of Mage GRAIAN here."
"What say you?"
30 Nov
CALLIN: "I am more than willing to join my companions to Ramathia." Callin pauses then adds. "Since you will be staying behind to see what happens surrounding Delmonte, would you be so kind as to keep a watchfull eye upon Appleton? They are good people and they are more valueble than any reward to me."
5 Mar
"Yes, please do," BELLESH begs in agreement, "and please warn them if you think the orcs are heading in that direction."
30 Nov
TAKASHI nods in agreement.
TAKASHI: "So, we sail for a lost island. Perhaps it is time for it to rejoin the the rest of the continent?"
30 Nov
GRAIAN smiles, "I am happy we are all going, I would have missed you all if you had decided to stay here. Thank you Marceau for your support and for any protection you can give to Appleton."
5 Mar
OK... we're goin' to Ramathia!
What equipment would you like to be outfitted with? You can assume food will be provided for the expedition.
GRAIAN and BELLESH, think about your magic spell books. You're going to have to bring them with you. You might want to consider making scrolls as well. I have houserules on that, but in a nutshell - 5 days/level of spell, 100gp/level of spell in components. For copying spells to a new book, similar.
CALLIN, for you to get 3rd and above spells (should you reach 5th level during this trip), you need to have either a prayer book or be at some consecrated site to reach the Light. Keep that in mind!
If you have questions or things you want to do, let me know. You have twenty days till you leave. Spend them wisely!
1 Dec
TAKASHI will see if Claudia wants to go to Ramathia, and if her parents approve. During the 20 days, he will continue to drill the town militia as a group, and Claudia separately.
He would ask that arrows be provisioned for the trip. As we don't know how long we will be gone, he will request at least 40 arrows per person equipped with a bow. He will bring his horse on the trip, assuming there is room, and will assume that everyone else in the group will do likewise.
Finally, he will instruct the people of Appleton to flee towards Skalfier (if that is closer than the keep) in the event of attack. The militia's role is to delay the attackers while the rest of the town can flee, and then to execute a fighting withdrawal. No sense in everyone perishing.
6 Dec
1. Claudia coming on the trip
The discussion lasts for several days, complete with tears on both parts of the parents and the young girl. She is dazzled by the prospect of adventure and campaigns heavily to go. The fear and worry that her parents display is expected and normal, and quite an obstacle to overcome. Finally, though, on the last day, she stands before you, proudly. She is wearing new clothing fit for traveling, a pack full of many foods and twelve arrows in a quiver with her bow. Her parents are standing behind her and step forward.
"Please bring back our child." Marc says to you. "She is our life and our future. As much as we want to hold her close, she has grown under your teaching. I don't want her to be a warrior, but if that is where her Light is the strongest, then we must let her walk that path. It is a hard thing, though, and we will pray that she comes back. Please, please... by the Light, make that happen, warrior. She is your student. You are her teacher. I place her in your care."
Ilya doesn't say a word, but chokes back tears as Marc speaks.
The three of them hug and share private words and then Claudia stands ready.
(Let me know if there are specific things you want her to have - you'll need to purchase them.)
2.a. Arrows - 40 arrows can be equipped to you - who else needs them?
2.b. Horses - there is not room on the ships for horses. You can leave them at Appleton.
3. The folks in the militia look grim when you give them those instructions, but they agree. Nervously. With a lot of foot shifting and looking down at the ground.
7 Dec
TAKASHI listens to Marc speak, and feels the burden he knew too well from times gone by.
TAKASHI: "I will watch over her as if she were my own, Marc. Perhaps even better. The Teacher must prepare the student, as it is natural that the student will one day need to carry the Teacher."
With that, he hugs Claudia's parents, and then makes sure that she has all she needs - her bow and arrows, axe, armor, traveling clothes, etc.
7 Dec
She has those things - is there anything specific you want to get for her?
7 Dec
If no one else wields a bow, then TAKASHI and Claudia are good with 40 and 12 respectively.
7 Dec
Noted - Claudia will be supplied with a total of 40 as well.
7 Dec
After TAKASHI speaks to the men of the milita, and sees their demeanor, he adds one more thing.
TAKASHI: "Remember that *YOU* and your family are the most important thing in Appleton. Buildings can be rebuilt. Crops can be planted again. But *YOU* can not be replaced. There is no sense staying and fighting to the last man when you return to fight another day. Protect the people of Appleton, give them time to retreat, then work together to fall back. Live to fight another day, and the LIGHT will be seen again."
7 Dec
There is some more shuffling of feet, but they all look resolute as they agree to what you say. They all gather to wish you well.
5 Mar
BELLESH will spend most of his time during the 20 days keeping to himself in the Manor; he doesn't want to answer a lot of questions about the changes he's undergone. He really doesn't know if he's going to be coming back to Appleton, so he'll gather up all the "normal" books he has left from the Athenum (the ones that don't have spells in them or eyes on the covers) and will see if he can sell them all at the Merchant's Guild Library in Skalfier. Then he'll take the coin he gets for them and use it to buy magical supplies and components, which he'll split with GRAIAN. Hopefully we'll be able to use that to prepare a few scrolls, and have some left over for if we need to do ritual casting or if we find some spells in Ramathia that we want to add to our books.
He'll take his travelling spell book along with him on the trip to Ramathia; his backup spell book he'll put in a box and bury it somewhere out by near his favorite apple tree, in a spot that he'll remember.
If his companions have a good plan for destroying, or otherwise getting rid of those books with the eyes and any others we believe to be corrupted, he will help to make that happen.
Before he leaves home for the last time, he'll tell Enid that the manor is hers now, and he'll thank her for all the kindness that she's shown him over the years.
5 Mar
1. The books fetch a nice sum from the Merchant's Guild - 383 gold crowns, 8 silver crowns.
Your search for components takes you back to "Tomfrey's Books and Oddities" in Dawnsedge. The squat short man waddles his way around the store, huffing and puffing as you rattle of the list of things that you both need. "Plannin' on startin' ye own store?" he grumbles. He carefully counts out all the coins that you give him, biting quite a few to make sure they're real.
(OOC: So - this is how this will work, since you'll be way far away from civilization - designate how much in gp you are devoting to spell components. Once we get to that point, to where you need them, I'll simply deduct the amount of spell components are worth.)
8 Dec
Ok, since I'm splitting this with GRAIAN, it should come out to 191 gold crowns, 9 silver if I'm doing that right. I'll use 100 crowns of that to create a scroll (see below) and another 80 crowns for components for ritual casting.
2. With regards to scrolls - how much do you want to spend? You can create 3 1st level scrolls, given time for travel to/from Skalfier/Appleton. Or 1 2nd level, 1 1st level.
8 Dec
He'll write a scroll with the spell burning hands on it.
8 Dec
Very good, note that on your CRS, please.
3. Does anyone have a good idea/plan on destroying those books?
8 Dec
Guess not, so I guess they stay locked up in that room. Maybe the orcs will find 'em (serves 'em right).
8 Dec
LOL. Noted that the books stay in Appleton.
4. Enid listens impassively to BELLESH, but tears stream out of her eyes and she hugs him wordlessly. As he opens the door, she speaks in a heavy voice.
"Come back to us. Master Flinigan always thought the world of you, and I believe you are a good young man. Don't lose your way and don't forget about us. This will always be your place and when you return, I'll have it ready for you."
8 Dec
He pauses at the doorway and listens to Enid with his back to her, then continues out without a word, closing the door behind him.
14 Dec
ATACIUS will like to settle certain things before we leave for Ramathia:
  • Is the statue of Sir Flinigan and Lady Catherine finished? Do we owe anything to the sculptor?
  • There are 332gp and 143sp of the "Appleton fund". I guess we will leave it to Enid. BELLESH? (Sure, I think we can trust Enid to use it as necessary for the village's benefit - Bellesh)
  • The Merchants Guild would like to buy our maps from inside of the Athenum. If we agree to sell them, I'm willing to make a deal with the Guild that grants us a percentage of any profit the Guild makes from using those maps. GUYS?
7 Dec
You can try it, but I doubt that they would agree to any such ideas. ;>
8 Dec
I will and see what happens. :)
Besides, he will buy/prepare the following things:
  • a dozen oil grenades and store them in two boxes full of straw for protection.
  • a bag of caltrops.
  • a bag of marbles.
  • a score of sling bullets.
  • a small mirror.
  • couple of ink vials, couple of quills and a dozen parchment sheets in a scrollcase.Does the Guild take values in custody? I'm planning to leave my gems and coins in Skalfier. Just in case.
5 Mar
1. Statue - Michelas is nearly finished and the "The Lovers Day" festival is planned for Summer 35 - five days before you are due to leave! Although you haven't seen the final piece, the glimpses you got of the statue looked fantastic - you can see the love that the two had for each other in their intertwined hands, and each of their faces bears the hallmarks of their personalities - the steadfast courage of Sir Flinigan and the burning curiosity of Christine. The remaining balance of what she bargained with TOBIAS/BELLESH (7 goldens every tendays - you paid 21 in advance) will be due upon delivery - which would total 89 goldens. (53 days in Winter, 45 days in Spring, 30 days in Summer - 7 silvers a day wages * 128 days = 89 goldens)
8 Dec
We pay it from the Athenum fund. 242gp and 143 sp after paying Michelas
2. When BELLESH spoke to Enid about it, she would have agreed to manage the money well.
3. The cost of equipment: 32 goldens, 7 silvers.
4. Let me know what you decide to talk to the Guild about with regards to the map of the Athenum...
7 Dec
Will seek an audience with a Guild Masters to talk about the Athenum maps. Will show them our maps and tell them what we have found, emphasizing how dangerous the place is and the risks we took, before asking for a percentage on the profits the Guild might make of any incursions into the Athenum.
8 Dec
How would you approach contacting a Guild Master?
8 Dec
I think the best way is through Marceau. I will take advice from him on the subject.
11 Dec
MARCEAU chuckles and nods in an admiring way. "A good sense of getting value out of information. Very smart, my friend... I approve. I tell you what. I know you have to leave soon, and it will take some time to entice a Guild Master to agree to such an arrangement. Leave me a map of the first few feet or so, with descriptions on how to get in and what is there, and I will make sure that when you return from your adventure, you get an audience. There's a way to get money from these old skinflints... it just takes time and a bit of finagling. What say you?"
12 Dec
ATACIUS quizically eyes MARCEAU for a brief moment while pondering his offer before answering. "Alright then, I trust you'll handle those old scrooges! You will have plenty of time before I come back." he says with a wink. "But, you'll understand I have to look after my friends' interests right? We did this together after all." he says still holding the map's copy. "They'll feel ressured if a reasonable deposit is made in the group's name at the Guild."
12 Dec
MARCEAU bows. "I have faith that you and your friends will return, and I would not think of stealing what is yours."
"Honor among thieves, after all!" he says in Cant.
He continues in Common. "I cannot say that you will get any money before leaving, but if you get an audience, I believe you'll be able to negotiate your way into some coin. Perhaps funding to more fully explore this place."
12 Dec
ATACIUS also bows. "I understand. It was never my intention to suggest anything like that."
"Honor among thieves!" he replies also in Cant.
"I hope this trip to Ramathia will bring knowledge and prosperity for everyone!" he says as he hands MARCEAU the maps.
12 Dec
ATACIUS will like to leave all his valuables in custody of the Guild (it also works as a bank right?).
120 80 gp
800 sp
3 gems (75 gp)
1 gem (500 gp)
1 gem (1000 gp)
Sapphire carving of a coiled serpent the size of a thumbnail, with golden points for eyes (50 gp)
12 Dec
For the coins, yes, you can get a letter of deposit. You will earn 2% on a year's deposit. A deposit chest can be made available for 10 goldens a season, 1 year due up front, to hold the rest.
12 Dec
Great! He will pay the 40 gp for the deposit chest.
12 Dec
4 seasons in a year... 40 goldens up front :)
ATACIUS will also visit Notebana to talk about the Ramathia trip. Maybe he's interested in going?
4 Dec
GRAIAN will spend some time with Shaiman to get a better understanding of the mood of the expedition and any internal opposition. After 10 days he will return to the Merchant's Guild, with whoever wants to come with him, to see what has been learnt.
He will pool his coins with Bellesh to get spell components, he already has 100GP worth. He also has two scrolls of currently unknown spells that he will try to understand, albeit cautiously as the last time he did this he polymorphed! Spare time will be spent reading the books from Athenum to learn as much as possible and preparing any scrolls that can be done. Before he parts with all his money he will purchase 2 flasks of oil.
11 Dec
Graian adds his 100G worth of components and 24G 3S to Bellesh's total of 191Gold. Giving him (@Chris ... your message didn't finish. Giving him... a wedgie? A troll hand? An empty mug? Help us out here! :D )
5 Mar
1. To read the scrolls requires the use of read magic to understand what they are. You won't need to use read magic upon casting. If you give them to BELLESH, he would have to cast read magic to understand them.
9 Dec
Graian will prepare a couple of read magic spells and read the scrolls. However, he will do this after talking to Callin and Bellesh and make sure they are with him, albeit not too close.
11 Dec
@Chris, you're going to laugh. If these are the two "unknown scrolls" on your character sheet, I told you what those were already... in Act 11 - right at the top :) https://rizzoma.com/topic/dc24668f2d319f19ffd350ddf0ab3539/0_b_8gb2_71auu/
If these are different scrolls, I'm not sure where you picked them up at. I think these are the same because I don't see any indication that you have the spell that is on these scrolls.
Let me know!
11 Dec
Ooops, guess I missed that note! Such is life... Graian now has one scroll of ignite and the spell in his spellbook
11 Dec
Sounds good. If you want to know what it does - https://the-dark-ages.obsidianportal.com/wiki_pages/additional-spells
2. It sounds like you would have about 15 days of possible time to prep scrolls or read. So you could prepare 3 first level or 1 second, 1 first level scrolls. 300gp total if you want.
3. Flasks of oil: 4 silvers total.
4. Shaiman and the elves are staying on their ships, but a marine brings you to his quarters upon identifying yourself at the docks and being taken by a boat to the Elven craft. It's a gorgeous piece of construction - the lines of the vessel are clean and some of the best that you have ever seen. The brightly colored pennants of families and crews fly on her rigging. Although her sails are rolled up, the colors of the family heraldry can be seen on the edges. The songs of elves fills your ears as you climb aboard the ship.
Shaiman greets you warmly. "I welcome you, Graian! It is so good to see you. I have good news for you, my friend - your clan has been added to this ships' crew roster, thanks to the actions that you took to secure this breakthrough. I would not forget someone who worked so hard to ensure that we have a chance at our Search. I'm told that they're already moving into new homes as a result of having a ship, and your name is sung highly in their homes."
He drops his voice a bit. "The Seadreamers are not so kind in their words about you... but that is to be expected."
"So... what do you think, brother? Are you ready to enter into lore and legend? This will be a journey for the stories!"
9 Dec
Garian is somewhat awed by the sight that greets him at the docks, it has been many years since he has seen anything like this. He is happy to see Shaiman again and returns his warm greeting. The news that his clan has been added to the ships roster is good news indeed,
11 Dec
Shaiman sees GRAIAN look at the ships, but misinterprets his look and begins shaking his head and pacing.
"I know, I know... I'm so angry at Vinalin! Serpent lying the seaweed, striking when we are most vulnerable. He waited till the council was gathered at Acoer and then struck." the elf explains in a bitter voice. "He cast enough doubt on the mission and on what you found, that the council felt that sending a full fleet would be foolish. He played on the fears of the humans and what they might do. He played on the doubt of old writings and most importantly, he played on the depression that has come over many about the Search, that we will never find Homeland."
Shaiman sighs. "So instead of twenty to thirty ships, we have three. A tenth of what we need, and they expect success!"
"Thank you my friend, that indeed is good news in this time of darkness, my clan will not let you down." Looking at some of the other ships "I expect nothing less from the Seadreamers, but I hope there are some that are sensible among them and do work with us to make this a frutiful journey. As for me, and my friends, yes we are ready to join you. There is some concern at leaving Appleton to fend for itself while we are away as there are many dangers for them to face, but they have been trained and prepared by the best."
11 Dec
"I too, worry about the Seadreamers. We've had to bring representatives along to represent the various families and ships, including theirs. In fact, you know the Seadreamers who have come along -- Sinyr and Hecil!" He then drops his voice. "Whatever happened in that accursed place has left Sinyr a hollow elf. She still seems elsewhere. Hecil... he is even more angry now, if you can believe that. Rulian... he has vanished. When we returned to Angon, he was not the same and one evening, he left his ship and has not been seen since. What ever they found in the Athenum has changed them forever."
"However.." and Shaiman's tone brightens. "You have someone along who has been looking forward to seeing you again, Angon! She was quite adamant that your clan should be awarded crew positions... she has taken a liking to you!" Shaiman chuckles.
"The Merchants Guild is doing some research for us, I hope we have information about Ramathia before we leave, I will be returning to them in a few days to see what they have found." Turning to look once more at the ships, "I must go and continue my preparations, but I will come back to see you soon."
11 Dec
He nods at hearing your words. "We have hired on several more of the local ships - mainly fishermen who've been brave enough to ply the waters deeper out. Stories and rumors of pirates and fearsome beasts, but that seems to always be the story of someone else, a brother's cousin's wife's sister's husband or so such nonsense." He shrugs. "Any information and guidance is better than none. And at least the weather has been somewhat favorable - a decent winter and spring, but I worry about late summer storms."
"I will see you soon, GRAIAN" and he claps your back. "We sail into history!"

CALLIN would like to invest in a prayer book, hopefully get it blessed by Maria, and work with her to begin to understand how to write scrolls or write in my prayer book. (This is also to stop and talk with Maria once again as she mentioned. ) I will inform her of our plan to leave for Ramathia, and let her know should she wish to escape to Appleton from time to time she is always welcome. CALLIN will also ensure his Holy water is filled ( not sure if I actually did the action, I paid for the containers ). And finally CALLIN would like to check in on BINDI if she is still at the temple, see how she is doing.

1. A book is 20 goldens. A prayer book is useful for the more advanced hymns and prayers that you would ask from the Light to bless you with. She has a book for you and takes the blank one in return, so that it can be prepared.
"Study these and commit them to memory. As you grow in the Light, and you pray these, or sing these, you'll find that the Light will grant you the miracles." she instructs. (OOC: you're studying for the point when you reach 5th level and can cast third level spells.)
2. Since it sounds like you're spending all 20 days at the temple, you can create 4 levels of scrolls - so 4 1st level spells OR 2 2nd level spells OR 2 first level, 1 2nd level spell. Total of 400 goldens to create them.
3. Maria smiles. "You've become quite fond of that village. I have all of them to tend to, but I will travel to Appleton - I remember the cider!" and she smacks her lips happily at the thought.
4. Just note the Holy Waters on your CRS
5. BINDI smiles happily upon seeing you. She nearly knocks over the candelabra that she was working on, but catches it in time. "It is so good to see you, Priest CALLIN!" she beams. "How are you?"

CALLIN:
TO Maria: "Thank you High Curate, these hymns and prayers will become part of my daily rituals. And thank you for looking after Appleton. I have indeed become quite fond of that little town. There is a strong sense of community there. Something that shines Light upon the world. We need more of that I think, and nourishing that Light is invaluable. " He pauses then adds. "And of course the cider helps as well"
11 Dec
Maria nods. "I also want to keep an eye on what Deneb is doing in the villages. The Lightbringers are on the hunt for Delmonte and I've heard rumblings that they're forcing villagers to come, during farming season! If that's true, I want to know for sure and then see what Otollum has to say. Light bless you, CALLIN... return safely from Ramathia. I'm curious to know if the old Temple terrace is still standing. Pagan gods, for sure, but it sounds like it was a sight to behold."
11 Dec
CALLIN: "I will do my best to locate the Old Temple. Ramathia does seem full of wonderment. It will be a good place to shine the Light. May the Light bless you too High Curate."
TO BINDI: "It is wonderful to see you as well BINDI! I am doing well. My group and I are preparing to leave for RAMATHIA, I wanted to see you and find out how you have been doing since we last traveled together."
11 Dec
BINDI smiles. "I am good!" she says. "Did you know that Maria has been tutoring me? She is so funny! I like her. She says I will be traveling with her when she goes out to the villages."
She looks in you with almost an awestruck look. "You have been busy, Priest. Nobody knows who the priest was who saved the graveyard... but I knew it was you!" she smiles. "And now Ramathia! I would love to come with you! It was be so ... just amazing!" she blurts out and then blushes. "I hope the Light keeps you safe. I can't wait to hear the stories you'll return with!"
11 Dec
CALLIN: "Yes High Curate Maria is a wonderful teacher. She has been invaluable to myself and the rest of my friends on many occasions. Listen to her well Bindi. She is wise beyond her years. I am also happy you will be traveling with her to the villages. Please keep a warm place in your heart for Appleton. Be safe and May the Light Bless you and light your way!"
( CALLIN doesn't have the funds to produce any scrolls so he will stick to the Holy Waters and prayer book for now. He would proabably also wish to take a trip to Appleton should they have some time. And provide a service for the town, as well as perhaps tap a local to provide worship to the Light in his stead. )
11 Dec
Perhaps that's a job that could be assigned to one of the clerics at the Temple that you know...
11 Dec
CALLIN will seek out BRIANINOV next and ask if he would be most kind to lead the worship services in Appleton in my stead.
12 Dec
Brianinov will indeed do so, and he mentions that Bindi had been asking to go out to villages as well. He comments on how she seems to be emulating you...
12 Dec
CALLIN "Thank you so much brother. I appreciate it. I considered asking Bindi as well, however I know she is currently being tutored by High Curate Maria, and I didn't wish to intrude on her training. But as she will be traveling to the villages, feel free to have her lead services in Appleton as needed!"
