Southern Seas - Act 19 - Winter 57 AD
Winter 37
ATACIUS and TOBIAS find Michelas waiting for them the next day at her shop. She has a large box of tools and a small bag of her personal effects. As you all travel north, she explains what type of stone she would like you all to find for her, based on the dimensions of the statue you describe. Ironically, it sounds like some of the stones from the fallen walls of the Athenum might suit her needs. She does need help on and off the horse she shares with one of you, but it's apparent that her lack of eyesight doesn't hinder her all too much. Her hearing is on par with ATACIUS's or GRAIAN's ability.
Winter 38
The mood in Appleton when you all arrive is somber. The deaths of the villagers still fresh in everyone's mind and the militia that had been forming seems dispirited. On top of that, the King's New Year Address - a letter sent out to the various duchies to be read to the people - has finally reached Skalfier lands, and it has not lifted anyone's spirit. The King has proclaimed that the rebuilding must continue, that the King expects all to do their duty in helping each other, but the armies of the Kingdom will not yet march.
Indeed, the only bright spot seems to be the return of you heroes. The militia comes at the regular time next day to drill with TAKASHI, although they seem listless at first. The morning and evening prayers are a bit larger to CALLIN's eye. TOBIAS is mostly left alone, although he catches whispering and glances in his direction when people think he is not looking. GRAIAN also is left alone to his study of the books from the Athenum. ATACIUS has the run of the place and plenty of opportunities to help with mid-winter jobs with the grove, helping TAKASHI with militia prep (which may remind ATACIUS of how the littleling clans and traveling bands would gather together to practice defense), watching Michelas and doing whatever a bored littleling might do.
TAKASHI
The weather is clear for the next ten days, which has some of the old timers wagging their beards about the lack of rain. TAKASHI's quick trip to Skalfier to pick up his armor is uneventful and the armor is beautifully made and shines bright in the sunlight. Mulhim looks quite pleased with himself and is even more pleased at the payment of 175 gold crowns. "I may keep these'n lads and lass on - they be knowin' how ta swing a hammer and shape a piece!" he says.
Upon returning, Claudia is very admiring of the armor. She and a few villagers start calling you "Sir Takashi."
ATACIUS
Michelas has no problems in getting folks to talk to her about Sir Flinigan and Christine. As she speaks to them, she takes parchment and does sketches, but not with a charcoal, rather she seems to inscribe her lines into the thick paper with a sharp stick. You can see her fingers feeling the lines and tracing out shapes as she listens to the stories. In a few days, she announces that she has an idea in mind. It is a statue that has the both of them standing close together, his hand outstretched towards the east, her hand covering her eyes as if looking into the light far away, and their other hands behind them, clasped. She sketches it out this time in charcoal and it is met with great approval from the villagers when they see it.
She agrees that a stone from the Athenum would be appropriate. "The stone has already been worked some, which is good. I can bring them out of the stone. And since they gave their lives there, it fits that a stone from there reveals the memory of them to those who loved him."
CALLIN
Your first few days are filled with many folks fretting about the lack of an uplift from the King's Address. Many find it hard to understand why things are not getting better. "It don't seem like those in the center care so much f'us out here anymore. Why, the Duchess 'erself be carin' more, not that ye can tell from th' way Reffyndi acts."
The grumbling quiets down soon, and life eases back into a quiet rhythm. Folks travelling to Appleton in the winter is very rare, so there is no news on the Lightbringers or necromancer. Nobody from Appleton or nearby knows of anything about either topic.
23 Aug
CALLIN will do his best to ease the fears and frustration of the fine people of Appleton. "While the King's Address might not be what we wanted to hear, remember he has a great weight upon his shoulders to bear. Perhaps we do not see all that he sees, nore hear all that he hears. What we can know is that the LIGHT is strong within us. That the LIGHT will guide us, protect us, and shine upon us when needed the most. These are indeed dark times, but that is when the LIGHT is needed the most. Let the LIGHT cast away that darkness. Let it shatter the shaddows and bath us in it's glory. When I first met Sir Flinnigan and came to Appleton, I could feel the LIGHT's touch upon this place. Even in the pitch of darkness, the LIGHTs embrace could be felt. Let it comfort and warm you. Let the LIGHT shine upon you and guide you!"
24 Aug
The two old men who've been most helpful, Harold and Jennings, snort softly. Harold whispers to Jennings "If he says Light one more time, I will have to shine a candle in his ear to see if there's nothing but light in his skull!" but they both are teasing in the "old man" way that you've grown accustomed to hearing from them and they, as well as others, seem to have their spirits lifted after your words. A few of the dames of the village leave you with bits of bread, jams and smoked meats in thanks towards your supper.
As the days stretch on, the rhythm gets back to what you would consider normal, although the older folk seem a bit more serious, especially as defensive preparations continue.
23 Aug
TOBIAS offers to describe Sir Flinigan and Christine in order to help Michelas with the statue, and can probably get some examples of their clothes to her for her to "see" with her hands, too. He likes the idea of having them hold hands in the statue.
He'll also be more than happy to talk with anyone that wants to about other good stuff that can be done for the village, especially since there are probably a lot of people who won't talk with him now. But most of his time is spent in the private room with the lock where he put all the books, reading them and practicing his magic.
24 Aug
As you interact with the villagers, you find about a 60/40 split of folks who support you - remembering your association with Sir Flinigan and respecting your powers - and those who are now completely opposed to you and the sorcery that you represent. It has made for some very tense moments and it doesn't seem to get any better as time goes on.
The books seem tantalizing in their hints of even more power beyond what they teach, but you find yourself understanding a bit more each day. The days that you confer with GRAIAN help at first, then get confusing, as sometimes what he says seems to clash with how you might want to think of what the books are telling you.
25 Aug
From what I can tell, there seems to be a lot in the books about human bodies/tissue and animating them (books made of skin, with working eyes, etc.) TOBIAS will shy away from spells of Necromancy, which he doesn't see as all that helpful, but will instead try to use the knowledge of bodies in the book to try and develop spells that affect the living, which he sees as far more pracical. He'll begin to study more independently from GRAIAN, to avoid the confusion of different interpretations.
See Note in CharSheet.
Michelas spends a lot of time talking to you and Enid, and she smiles broadly at your idea of their clothes. She bows her head gravely upon hearing that you like the idea of their hands clasped.
"From what you tell me, young man, it was their love that set them both free and reunited them at the end. It is fitting that the reminder of their love always be present, to remind others that love will always shine a light in darkness."
25 Aug
TOBIAS nods sadly. "It was their love what brought them back together, but what took Sir Flinigan away too. In the end though, I think they were happy."
25 Aug
Michelas smiles. "In the end, that is all we can hope for... for our lives to have had some meaning to others and that they can pass that on."
She begins to work on the stones from the Athenum, feeling her sketches, then feeling the stone and then making chips and incisions. At first, it is hard to see what she is doing, or that her sculpting amounts to anything, but slowly, Sir Flinigan's face begins to emerge from the stone, as does his body.
Claudia spends some time with you too. She tells you about the stories of adventure in the books you found for her. You can see the eagerness in her eyes as she speaks about the stories and her wishes to someday find such adventures. She makes a point of avoiding conversation about what happened at the keep.
25 Aug
TOBIAS delights in the time spent with Claudia, and talks with her about adventures, but it's hard for him to forget the images in his mind from Athenum and from the run-in with the orcs. What he's more excited to talk about is how much he's learning from the new books, and he lets it slip that he's working on being able to do a "special spell" that he can cast for her.
25 Aug
Claudia seems curious about what this might be, but she is clearly focused on her training and even a once-whispered-not-repeated wish to go join the Duchess's forces as a soldier at the city of Dawn some day.
24 Aug
While CALLIN is interacting with the townsfolk does he see the dirresion with the village and TOBIAS? ( I don't want to META :) )
25 Aug
It's very obvious who supports TOBIAS and who doesn't.
25 Aug
OK. CALLIN will do his best to identify what it is that is causing the standoffishness with the Villagers and attempt to work on a Sermon that might smooth things over a bit.
28 Aug
From what you can tell, the deaths of the villagers at the hand of the Orc scouts, TOBIAS's spellcasting and the accusations laid against him have cause some to believe that he is too dangerous, with his "sorcerers curse" to be allowed to stay in the village. They blame the deaths on him, believing the accusations. @Joseph Schnurr
28 Aug
CALLIN will seek out TOBIAS to talk with him about the accusations and the Orc Scout raid. "TOBIAS, I want to help mend the trust between some of the villagers and yourself. I know there has been undo blame, but when you weild power like you do, it can cause people who see from a distance to view it with contempt. I have felt this before as well. I belive I can help, but I need you to tell me about that day and what exactly happened. Can you do that?"
28 Aug
TOBIAS snorts. "Pfft! If some of those folks in town had let me tell them exactly what happened, maybe they wouldn't hate me!"
He will tell you the whole story, he seems to be itching to tell it all to someone that will listen:
(Too much typing for me to tell everything that happened right now, I just copied it all over. It's a long read, but a good one I think,
just expand the chat box):
28 Aug
Meanwhile... in the late afternoon of the 33rd day...
28 Aug
One of the villagers, Matt, comes knocking at the door, urgently. "Master Tobias!' he calls loudly until Enid opens the door and lets him and summons you.
He looks visibly frightened and immediately begins talking fast. "MasterTobiasyouneedtocomeandbringyourfriendsIthinktheywillwanttoseethisandprotectusthechildrentheyfoundsomethingthatscaredthemtodeathandtheyshouldbescaredbecauseits orcs!"
He takes a deep breath and gasps. "Will you all come!?!"
28 Aug
Tobias puts down his book and warm cider, getting up from near the fire, and scrambles to grab and put on his long coat with the wide pockets. He steps towards Matt, ready to follow, saying "Umm... sure, ok... I guess... can you say that again?"
28 Aug
Matt takes a deep breath.
"Sorry, Master Tobias. Yiney and Josef were out looking for ponds to fish in. Out west a bit. They came back, white as spirits and so afraid! They saw two orcs sneakin' about, maybe even coming this way! I figger you and your friends can go scare 'em off! We don't want those foul things coming this way! Don't want an orc raid... " and he shivers and goes pale at the thought.
28 Aug
Tobias' heart starts to race. Orcs!! He thinks he remembers reading about them, but he's never seen one.
"Okay..." he says slowly, trying to think, "Those folks that went into Athenum with me aren't around, so Matt... go see if you can find Yiney and Josef, and some of the town militia, the ones what have training, and have them meet me on the west side, by the old oak." (Or whatever that can pass for a landmark on the west side of the village.)
"Enid, if Takashi, Callin, Atacius, or Graian come back, please tell them where we went." He goes to grab his backpack and daggers, then heads out towards the west side of town.
28 Aug
Matt nods. "OK, Tobias."
(A few minutes later...)
After meeting by the old oak, a favorite hangout of the kids wanting to get away from the shorter apple trees, you see that Matt has Yiney and Josef with him. A man and woman (Phillipe and Yoni) are also there, each in what passes for leather armor and equipped with spears. Matt has a piece of wood that probably serves as a club and a dagger.
After a short discussion with the frightened children, Philippe knows of the pond they are talking about. "Been fishin' mesef there a time or two a year or so. Nice hookmouths there." He sends the boys off and appears to want to take charge of the situation. "OK, iffin' there be orcs there, they be bloodthirsty and dangerous. We might be able to scare 'em off if we make like we're part of a bigger troop. So we'll go in front, and you two (he points to Matt and Tobias) stay behind a bit and make loud noises like ye be many folks when I give ye the signal that we're close. It's a short walk."
He and Yoni turn about to walk out without waiting to see if you agree. Matt looks at you and shrugs. "I been to one trainin' but I ain't no fighter." and he begins to walk behind the two.
28 Aug
Tobias shrugs in sympathy and walks along side Matt. "I don't think I could sound much like an army, either." He raises his voice to be heard up ahead, "Hey Phillippe, I don't think Matt and I would be very convincing trying to sound like soldiers. Also, Takashi told me that he ran into a group of orcs once, and they weren't all that bloodthirsty..."
28 Aug
Philippe turns and gives you a sour look at first, and then chuckles in a mocking way.
"You ever been in combat, boy? Ever seen someone die at the end of a blade? You know what our trainer told us? After he showed us the big chunk'o skin he was missin' on his side? He said that the last thing new recruits hear when they face orcs is their own screamin' after the orcs run them through. Plenty o' folks here remember the raids from twenties... and how they kilt everything they ran into. So sure, you go ahead and have a chatsie w' the beasts. I'll give your friends your body." he says in a nasty tone.
"Now, if you don't mind, we need to keep still.. those orcs know how ta hide. We don't want to give ourselves away." he turns away to lead the group again.
28 Aug
Tobias frowns at Phillippe's tone, and he feels his temper rising.
"I've seen someone what died at the end of a blade." he says, softly but clearly, when Phillippe starts to turn away. "When it was done, I was covered in blood, and my blade was so bent and useless I had to leave it lying in the grass." His face twists with the memory, then he continues, "Now, you've been around a lot longer than me, and you've had the training, so if it comes down to fighting, I'll leave you to it. But don't you try to tell me what to do."
28 Aug
Philippe looks back at Tobias and just shakes his head, glances at Yoni and then keeps moving forward.
A short walk, much less than the walk to the Athenum, and Philippe suddenly crouches down, as does Yoni. He makes a sushing signal with his finger to his mouth. After a few minutes, you can hear it too, a faint conversation in a grunting, growling language.
Philippe pantomimes making big noises to you and Matt. Matt clutches his club and nods nervously, glancing at you. Philippe and Yoni heft spears and get ready to move towards the noise.
28 Aug
Tobias looks down, frowning, at the daggers in his hands, which he had been thinking of banging together for noise, then he shakes his head and sheathes them. He crouches down and tries to move up silently to join Phillippe and Yoni. He wants to see an orc!
28 Aug
As TOBIAS moves up, Matt tries to grab at him. "Hey! Get back here with me, Master Tobias! We need to stick together!" he whispers.
Yoni's head whips around to glare at you both but just then Philippe freezes. The grunting/growling has stopped.
28 Aug
Tobias frowns at Matt, then turns back to watch up ahead, as closely as he can.
28 Aug
We're going to move into combat rounds. You know they're there, and now they know you're there, it's just a question of how close and who goes first. While normally I give the PCs a lot of leeway with what the NPCs do, when the PCs are in a leadership position, right now, Philippe and Yoni are going to act independently. That might change! But you'll know when it does.
COMBAT ROUND 1
28 Aug
Declarations:
TOBIAS - moves forward as quietly as he can at the same speed as Phillippe and Yoni, keeping the same distance between him and them. (Query: how far of a distance is that roughly, and do we have good daylight to see by?) They will move 60' with caution, a lot of caution. They have leather/weapon, but that would put them normally at 120'. The sun is early evening, so it is low in the sky. Actually, given you're moving west, you're looking into it, once the grasses and cattails are out of the way. (Roger that. So we're all moving at the same speed, 60', but they're still, what, 30' ahead of me?) No, more like within 5', as you moved up close to them. Unless you're wanting to maintain some distance, then you can let that gap widen this round. (Yeah, I'll give them a little more distance, but not much... I'll try to keep 20' away from them, just so I'll have a little different view in case of ambush.) Got it. That will put you behind Matt. You all were pretty close together - the entire group was no more than 10' front to back. I think you had a different view of the "spread". Matt will want to stay close to them. Does that help with what you want to do? (Yep, thanks. So we'll be a little more spread out, with me about 20' behind the 3 of them.) Got it! You're going to be the Lone Ranger there, my friend...
Philippe - makes a motion for you all to be quiet and makes a definitive pointing motion to TOBIAS to stay next to Matt. He motions to Yoni to come with him, as he's going to move further in the tall grasses and cattails that surround the area around the pond. Right now, there's enough brush and overgrowth that you can't see above it unless you stand on someone's shoulder.
Yoni - Yoni nods to Philippe, hefts her spear and cautiously will move with Philippe.
Matt - gulps nervously, hefts his cudgel and moves behind Philippe, his head swinging around wildly. He's beginning to pant in fear.
INITIATIVE
PCs: Michael S (chgowiz) rolled 1d6 for a total of 6
DM: Michael S (chgowiz) rolled 1d6 for a total of 3
RESULTS:
Philippe makes a motion for you all to be quiet and makes a definitive pointing motion to TOBIAS to stay next to Matt. He motions to Yoni to come with him, as he's going to move further in the tall grasses and cattails that surround the area around the pond. Right now, there's enough brush and overgrowth that you can't see above it unless you stand on someone's shoulder. Yoni nods to Philippe, hefts her spear and cautiously moves with him. Matt gulps nervously, hefts his cudgel and moves behind Philippe, his head swinging around wildly. He's beginning to pant in fear.
TOBIAS allows them to move forward till about 20 feet separates them from him and then he moves forward. Philippe cautiously parts the grasses and cattails and looks out over the pond, which you can't see, but you can smell the water. The grass is very thick here and it is hard to move quietly, each footstep seems to make noise like thunder to those trying to be quiet.
The first to die is Matt. He turns to his left and starts to say "I think I ...." and then the Orc hiding in the grasses roars and plunges his sword into Matt's chest. The human gasps, blood bubbling on his lips and he slumps to his knees, the cudgel dropping from his hand.
Philippe and Yoni turn in shock and alarm at the Orc's battle cry. Then, right next to Yoni, another Orc roars a deafening, frightful cry as it bursts from the grasses. The brief scuffle that ensues sees Yoni dodging and ducking swings of the cruel Orcish saber, but then she screams as the Orc plunges its blade into her neck. "YONI!" Philippe shrieks in panic.
(The Orcs gained surprise on the check. Since you 'knew' they were in the area, I allowed the movement of the PCs but that just put them in the ambush zone. You keeping back is what kept you out of the pool of "who can be attacked!") - (Smart. I think it's what I would've done if I were them. Yea, this was not a fun combat to watch play out... knowing that this was going to be deadly.)
(Your CHA is 9, which doesn't award any bonuses to morale checks. Philippe is going to make a morale check during his declaration to determine if he breaks or not.)
COMBAT ROUND 2
28 Aug
You are in tall grasses and cattails, that rise to your face and above, facing west. The pond is about 25' in front of you. Philippe and the two Orcs are 20' in front of you. They are under 5' apart from each other.
Declarations:
TOBIAS - *gulps* and tries not to panic. He casts the sleep spell; he wants to center it so that it covers the entire area in front of him (the orcs and Philippe) Roll 2d8 for the HD affected, please. Derek Daniels rolled 1, 7 on 2d8 for a total of 8
Philippe - (morale check)
Yoni - dead
Matt - dead
INITIATIVE:
PCs: Michael S (chgowiz) rolled 1d6 for a total of 1
DM: Michael S (chgowiz) rolled 1d6 for a total of 5
RESULTS:
TOBIAS - *gulps* and tries not to panic. He casts the sleep spell, just as it looks like Philippe is about to drop to his knees as well, letting loose of his spear, his face contorted in fear and panic. The Orcs both turn to TOBIAS... and everyone drops to the ground as if puppets suddenly cut from their strings.
Just as suddenly as the battle started, it is over and there is silence around you. Matt's body is slumped on his knees, while Yoni's body is face down on the ground. The grass and cattails around them are stained red with their blood. The Orcs and Philippe are breathing in their magic slumber, but you can't hear it.
END OF COMBAT.
What does TOBIAS do now?
28 Aug
Tobias takes a deep breath, and goes forward to check on Matt and Yoni, sadly pushing their eyelids closed when he's sure they're gone. He wanted to see the orcs, but not like this! He picks up Phillipe's spear, and grimly goes over to one of the sleeping orcs and puts him to death with it. Then he takes the remaining orc and human weapons (except the spear and his own daggers) and tosses them away into the tall grass. He quickly looks to see if anyone has rope, which he would use to tie the other orc's hands and feet together, gently but securely. If not, he'll cast the charm person spell on the sleeping orc. Finally, he'll nudge Phillipe awake with the butt end of his spear.
28 Aug
As you push the spear into the Orc to kill it, it awakens from the pain. It looks at you straight in the eyes, and then GRABS THE SPEAR and thrusts it in harder, pulling you closer. It grunts something at you in Orcish, staring at you with contempt until life leaves it. Its hands continue to grip the spear strongly, even in death, forcing you to pry them apart to remove the spear.
Nobody has rope and you don't see the Orcs' gear around you. Once you are done with the spell, you are uncertain if it worked, with the Orc sleeping.
28 Aug
Given Tobias' background, there's a good chance that he's tried this trick already... with his parents. If you think he's tried it before when his ma or da was asleep, and it didn't work, let me know. He wouldn't have wasted the spell on the orc if that's the case.
28 Aug
It's not a case of whether it would work or not mechanically, based on the spell description, I rule that it would. You just don't know because the Orc is asleep and you can't interact with it to see if it's charmed.
28 Aug
And I don't know if he's made his save or not, understood!
28 Aug
Exactly. When you did it to your parents, you would have had to wait for them to wake up before you could "test" to see if the charm had worked.
Philippe grunts and moans as he wakes up, and then he jumps upright on his feet, looking around bewilderedly. He catches sight of Matt and Yoni and a wail escapes his lips. He looks around again, sees you with the bloody spear. His mouth opens and closes and tears trickle out of his eyes.
"What..wha... happened?" he asks in a broken voice. "I remember Matt and Yoni bein' kilt.. they... kilt... and then ... " and he breaks down into sobs.
The smell of copper is overpowering.
28 Aug
Tobias walks over by Phillippe and puts a hand on his shoulder. "I'm sorry, Phillippe, it's not your fault. They were hiding in the grass waiting to ambush us."
He watches to see if Phillippe is calming down, if so he continues: "I cast a magic spell to put them asleep. I wasn't sure if you knew before... I'm a wizard." He watches to see the reaction, and then: "I killed one of them already with your spear, but I thought maybe we might want to see if we can get this other one to tell us how many others are around, or if they're planning to attack the village or anything."
"I cast a spell on him that should make him think I'm his friend, but if we're going to try it, you should keep your spear pointed at him just in case. If not, I guess we'll have to kill him, I couldn't find any rope to tie him up with."
28 Aug
(Philippe is not doing very well with his morale/reaction checks...)
Philippe listens silently, stoned faced. You get to the end of your words and a long silence... and you see his face turning more red by the moment.
Finally, comes the explosion.
"You're what?!? A wizard?!? One of those.. those.. those... evil wizards?!?" he shrieks. "And you cast a spell on me?!? How DARE YOU?!?" He jumps up and starts to back away from you, circling so that he is between you and the village.
"I knew there was something wrong with you!" he hisses. "I told Sir Flinigan not to take you in, but that poor man had such a heart of gold... and then he lost it down in that cursed place - probably where you BELONG!"
He then pales. "You think you can probably turn me to into a bird or bug... but I won't let you! I will tell them all about you!"
With that, he turns and runs pell mell back towards Appleton.
28 Aug
"Wait! I need your help to get Matt and Yoni back to town so we can bury them!" *sigh*.
I turn around and wait, leaning on my spear, for the orc to wake up. At a distance, say about 30-40 feet. We'll see if he wants to talk.
28 Aug
The sun has crept a little bit closer to the horizon, not long, but you are all alone in those ten minutes. Alone in a scene that you probably have not been in before.
The bodies are there before you. Matt still on his knees, the last look of shock on his face. Yoni, fortunately, is face down. The Orc that you killed is face up, it's features still contorted in contempt. Small insects are beginning to collect around the blood. (I did turn over the humans right after the fight, so I could check them, and ultimately I wound up pushing their eyelids closed; sorry if I wasn't clear on that)
Finally, the remaining Orc stirs. It sits up and shakes its head back and forth, blinking its eyes to focus. It looks around at the tableau and then focuses on you, standing there with your spear.
It stands cautiously, watching you carefully. There is intelligence behind those eyes and you can see that it is puzzled, but seems to accept you. It barks something at you and ...
(We get to an interesting question! Would you understand Orcish? I see no languages noted on your char sheet. You have the ability to know 4 additional languages - I don't want to assume, but it's logical that you would know Elvish and perhaps Littleling, but would you know Orcish? Hmmm... what do you think?) - (Crap, I knew I forgot something! I think you're right about Elvish and Littleling, Tobias would want to know those languages so he could read their books! I don't think he'd be particularly drawn to Orcish unless he'd heard of their kind of (shamanic?) magic and found it interesting... If you just want to roll randomly from the list of available languages left, I'd be ok with that)
28 Aug
Common, elven, *kobold (spoken only)*, goblin, littleling, *dwarf (ancient - read only)*, orcish, ancient human, tribal human (Ja'kar's language), ancient Elven (read only), other/roll against bestairy
Those are the languages that elves know off the bat. The ones I've added are based on things that have come out in play and are in italics. That's 8 that you could possibly have. So, two more...
Michael S (chgowiz) rolled 1d8 for a total of 1 - kobold *snerk - now there's a story...*
Michael S (chgowiz) rolled 1d8 for a total of 5 - ancient human
28 Aug
Yeah, the ancient human makes perfect sense; the kobold's going to take some creativity... maybe there's more to his backstory between his parents and Sir Flinigan, would explain why he doesn't necessarily hate bestials. As for orcish, well, here's a perfect opportunity to learn some!
... and you have no idea what it's saying! Puzzled, it seems to repeat what it is speaking and then looks at you expectantly.
Tobias shakes his head. "Can you understand me?" he calls out in the common tongue. He drops his spear and starts walking towards the orc.
28 Aug
The Orc cocks his head and barks a longer string of grunts and words that you can't understand. A puzzled look comes over his face as you drop your spear and start walking to him. He doesn't pick up his weapon, but he doesn't look comfortable right now.
28 Aug
Tobias stops about 10 feet away from the orc. "Tobias. Tobias." he says, patting his chest with an open hand. I point to the orc, then smack my hands together, then point to my head, then point at the orc again. (If there's still any other weapons lying around, Tobias is going to be the one uncomfortable because he thought he tossed 'em all off in the high grass, see above)
28 Aug
Apparently the one under the orc that you spared was missed.
The Orc looks at you as if you are crazy. It picks up its sword and considers it and you for a long moment....
... and then sheathes it. It speaks to you for what probably is some 20 to 30 seconds, with a lot to say, but in its language. It thumps its chest and waves its arms once or twice and then it points to the fallen Orc and humans. It laughs a grim laugh, then points at you. It looks at you expectantly.
28 Aug
"Yes, there was a fight," Tobias says sadly, waving his arms over the dead bodies and nodding, but knowing that the orc can't understand him. "I don't know why my friends and you had to fight."
He puts his hand on his chest again, while with the other hand he raises in a fist, lifting a finger and says "One." Then he points to Matt's body and raises a second finger while saying, "Two." He points to Yoni, and a third finger goes up. "Three."
Tobias starts over with the orc, pointing at him with one hand while in the other a finger goes up. "One." Then he points to the fallen orc with 2 fingers raised. "Two." Then, while keeping the 2 fingers raised, he waves with his other hand towards the direction where he thinks the orcs came from and puts a questioning tone in his voice: "More? More than two? Three or more?" He watches the orc for a reply.
28 Aug
The orc has a bemused look during TOBIAS's counting and pointing. When TOBIAS finishes up, the Orc barks a laugh and says something in its language. It steps over to the other Orc, goes down on one knee and puts its hands on the body's chest. The Orc says something in what seems to be a chant or prayer, and TOBIAS hears a word "Moloch" said several times. When the Orc is finished, it turns and says something to TOBIAS, pointing at him.
The Orc then turns and begins to jog away to the west.
28 Aug
Tobias watches the orc go, then he walks over to the other orc's body and looks and feels around to see if it had anything unusual in its pockets, armor, or on its belt that might give some insight. Then he goes over to Matt & Yoni's bodies and picks up everything that he can find on them that he thinks would be of value, sentimental or otherwise, to their families, and that he thinks they would want returned to them. He tries to consolidate it all in a pack or sack so he can carry as much as possible. He goes about this work with tears welling in his eyes, feeling more alone than he ever has been before. Then he starts trudging back towards Appleton. Whenever it starts to get dark, he lights his lantern.
28 Aug
Matt has a bracelet on him that has a small charm. Yoni has a necklace and a "promise" ring - she was to be wed to Ethian, a farmer at Appleton, next Spring.
The Orc has nothing on it, aside from it's leather and metal armor, which has a stylized fist in red paint that looks like blood.
The journey back to Appleton seems to take quite awhile in that loneliness. The cold air whistles around your head as the sun begins to dip below the horizon.
There is still sun peeking above the horizon when you return to the oak tree near the groves, and ominously, you see what appears to be a large crowd in front of Flinigan's... no, YOUR manor house. You would guess at least half of the village is there. This would probably explain why you haven't ran into anyone as you neared Appleton.
28 Aug
Tobias steps back behind the tree. He really doesn't feel like facing down a crowd of angry villagers right now. If Matt's family or Yoni's family live in a house that he could get to without getting within sight of the manor, he'll go there. Otherwise, he'll think about going to Ethian's farm instead.
28 Aug
You earned 200XP for the Orcs. I do 1HD = 100XP and I will often give XP rewards for enemies "dealt with", not only just killed.
Yoni's house is the only one that wouldn't potentially expose you to the crowd. As you near her family house though, you hear the sounds of grieving from quite a few people, two voices in particular which are probably her Mother and Father. Outside, you see a stocky young man on the porch, his head buried in his hands. (If you approach, I'll continue it here.)
28 Aug
Do I know the young man? If so, I'll approach and call his name. Otherwise, I'll just approach.
28 Aug
It's Ethian. At first, he doesn't recognize you through his tears, but as you get closer and call his name, he wipes his eyes with his shirt sleeve and looks at you.
He doesn't say anything in his grief, but his eyes just bore into you, with a look of devastation and despair.
28 Aug
Tobias looks down to escape his gaze, trying not to cry. "I'm sorry, Ethian," he manages to croak out. He reaches into the pack, pulls out the necklace and the ring, and holds them out for Ethian to take.
28 Aug
(Ethian is in his late teens, a bit older than you.)
Ethian takes the items wordlessly, looking at them with the same shattered look that he gave you. After a long moment, he finally speaks.
"Is it true?" his voice cracks as he speaks. "Is it true what Philippe said? That you're some sort of sorcerer? You cast some spell and made the Orcs all dead and almost killed Philippe? That you could have ... have... have saved her?!" He sobs and steps away from you, fixing his eyes again on yours with grief and anger.
28 Aug
Tobias frowns and shakes his head. "No. He's got it all mixed up in his mind. Philippe, Matt and Yoni went up ahead with their spears, but the orcs were hiding, waiting for them in the tall grass by the pond. They jumped out and killed Matt and Yoni... no one could have saved them. Then Phillipe started to run... that's why I had to cast that spell to make the orcs fall asleep, else they would have killed us, too!"
He sighs, remembering. "When Philippe woke up, he got scared because I'd used magic, and he ran away. He left me there alone! I couldn't carry Matt and Yoni back by myself. I can show you where they are tomorrow, if you want. We can bring them back and have Callin do the... the services."
28 Aug
"So you do admit it... you ARE a sorceror!" Ethian says, not really listening to what you suggested. He takes half a step back.
"So why... why... why couldn't you just do your magic and save them!? If you're a sorceror, you could have killed those Orcs before they even knew you were there! Turned yourself into a bird or something and stop them!"
28 Aug
"I'm just a beginner.." Tobias says peevishly.
Ethian takes another step back.
"Ma always said there was something funny 'bout you. So did other people too. But Flynn, he said trust you... and even Yoni, she said... and you just... " and with that he wipes his eyes again hard, keeping himself from crying in front of you. He turns and walks back into the house, slamming the door shut behind him.
28 Aug
You can hear noise from the gathered villagers, it sounds like they're getting very worked up. It's hard to make out what they're saying.
28 Aug
Oh, Tobias isn't sticking around. He's going to go and see if he can find an abandoned shed or barn or something where he can hide and sleep for the night. It's obvious that nobody wants him around, so he doesn't want to be around them either.
28 Aug
Abandoned? No, not around Appleton. You could see which ones are less likely to be used in Winter, but poking about might reveal yourself. And it's getting cold out, with Winter... not terribly cold, but not comfortable either.
Some options: hole up in a barn/shed and hope nobody finds you. Strike out to somewhere nearby, a farmstead that is empty, although traveling in the dark with a lantern might be daunting. Try to sneak back into the manor from the back or unseen. Wait it out until the crowd breaks up. Maybe something else I haven't thought of?
28 Aug
(At this point, he's probably thinking that it might be time to go back and stay with that band of kobolds, but I don't know how far away they are. If he knows what direction to go in to get to a nearby farm he'll head that way, otherwise he doesn't have much choice but to try and hide in a barn until things calm down. What's happened so far fits pretty well with my conception of Tobias; I've imagined him as being pretty smart at magic for his age, and even fairly decent at tactics, but his big weakness is that he just doesn't know how to deal with people very well.)

28 Aug
Oof, my man, the dice have been BRUTAL against you.
You move off into the dark towards the farmstead that had been cleared of the Damned in the Fall (and since revisted by TASKAHI and Claudia to confirm it as cleared out.)
Whether it was from anger, grief or a combination of the two, after what feels like an hour of stumbling in the dark with only your lantern giving you vision, you realize that you are well and truly lost. You know you started off in a southerly direction. It seems however, you are not where you thought you should be.
28 Aug
Ah yes, that was the farmstead where we found those signs of orcs? No, that hamlet was up north beyond the Athenum. This was the farmstead where you captured the Damned and took her to Skalfier to be cured, and where Atacius found the chest. (The hamplet, that's right... wish I'd remembered that sooner :) Well, wandering lost in the dark is no good, so he'll have to hunker down as best he can here. Tobias will look for any kind of shelter in the immediate area, even a large rock to curl up next to or a tree to climb, and try to wrap himself up as best as possible to try and stay as warm as he can while he tries to sleep.
28 Aug
I should mention that as the sun was setting and you were leaving Appleton, you heard a strange noise like low thunder. You've heard thunder before roll across the grasslands, but this was an odd sound, especially since it seemed very rhythmic. It lasted for a short while, then stopped. No idea of exact direction, aside from it came from the northwest.
You can find a copse of trees and since you have your oil and pack with you, you can start a fire as well. Your common sense tells you this would be a good idea, as it's getting far too cold to be without warmth.
28 Aug
Yes, if it's getting that cold, I'll have to risk the fire. While I gather up what I need for it I'll try to keep an ear out for that sound; if it was from the NW and I hear it again, maybe it'll give me some idea of where I am now. Ah, good point, it would hard for you to know exactly what direction, but once you get up in the morning, you can probably hazard a good guess. That was a gimme! :D
The night is uncomfortable (no recovery today of your spent spell) but you do not freeze or get ill, as the fire keeps you warm enough. The morning dawns sullen and gray.
28 Aug
If Tobias has any unspoiled rations left in his pack, he'll use it to eat. He'll take his time and get a good look all around and try and figure out where he might be.
28 Aug
It takes you only a short time to realize that you are near the road that runs between Skalfier and the Keep/Duchy interior. So you went SE instead of S.
If you don't have rations in your inventory, then your stomach is growling! :) Otherwise "munch, munch, munch..."
28 Aug
(I have them in my inventory, but I think that's just laziness from not updating my sheet. I just went in there to reorganize to put the stuff where it belongs that we brought back from Athenum. I should probably pause now and give the others a chance to catch up, they're still in the night.)
28 Aug
Ok, Tobias has made up his mind to try and get back to Athenum Appleton, and try to sneak back into the manor, maybe through the back. He's worried about his books, and Enid too!
28 Aug
The Athenum is north of Appleton. You are southwest of Appleton. You headed south to go to the abandoned farmstead. Which you ended up going SE.
Or are you heading to the Athenum for a different reason? - (Nah, just a miskey, I meant Appleton - There's no manor at Athenum that I know of!)
28 Aug
OK, roll me another d6 and tell me what you get.

You are successful in sneaking into the manor house (I'll leave it to you to set the precendent for how one can sneak into the manor! :> )
You hear the normal sounds of the house - Enid is in another room, doing her chores. You do not hear your friends back from Mount Keep, though.
28 Aug
(I'm thinking that there's probably an (apple?) tree in the back that he know he can climb... I forget how many stories high the manor is, if it's more than one he could climb up it and get in a 2nd story window, otherwise he could climb up it and get to the roof, and get in through a door up there) it's in pretty run down shape. The second floor is acting at a roof, at this point, and there are drips and drafts all over the place. Enid does what she can, but without Sir Flinigan, it will get worse. Not that he was much help to begin with. So an apple tree, into the second story and down to the first floor makes alot of sense!
Tobias is bone-weary after yesterday and an unrestful night in the cold. He goes to check on Enid first. "Enid? Are you ok?"
28 Aug
Enid sets down her rag and looks at you carefully, up and down, for a long time. Finally, she reaches up and wipes away at her eyes and then takes a deep breath.
"Master Tobias, when Flinigan took you in, he warned me that you were different, that in some ways, you were very similar to Christine. He said little else, but he also said that you should be allowed to grow, much as the apple trees that he loved so much would grow. That with careful tending and sometimes some pruning, but always with love and hope, that you would make good choices and have an open mind, much as his beloved."
"I don't believe for a second what Philippe said, Master Tobias, and I gave him a right piece of my mind. He knows that I know he's a coward and a bully, always has been and always will be, unless the Light shines extra hard in that thick noggin of his. He will, however, have stirred up enough of the village that they might wish to discuss it with you. There's no leader now, and folks will want someone to set them straight. If that fine friend of yours, the priest, Callin, were here, they'd listen to him."
She does something completely different than what you'd expect, she reaches out and pats your hand kindly.
"I know you saved that man, although the Light only knows why poor Matt and Yoni were the ones to be taken. Poor Ethian. He will take this harder than any know."
She gets up and heads to the kitchen.
"Now, by the looks of you, you have not eaten or slept well. Let me get you something and then you get some rest. Hopefully your friends will return soon and together, you all can set this right. And then... we can discuss why Orcs are snooping around Appleton!"
28 Aug
Tobias blows out a breath he didn't realize he'd been holding, and feels tears welling in his eyes. This is the most Enid has ever said to him at once, and he's so relieved to finally have someone believe him. "Thank you, Enid! It felt like the whole village was mad at me because of what Phillippe said... I saved his life, and he acted like I was some kind of dragon! I did find Ethian, and gave him the things that Yoni had that I could carry back for him, but he was still mad at me..." He reaches in to the pack and pulls out Matt's bracelet and puts it on the table. "Matt had this... I thought his family would want it back. Those orcs were vicious, Enid! If there are many more out there, and there's a fight..."
28 Aug
"Mad? Only Philippe, especially if you saved his life. Everyone else is afraid or grief stricken. Some remember the years after the Doom, when the Orcs raided and roamed our lands and we had to fight to survive. Most of us didn't know if tomorrow would come..."
Enid shakes her head. "Days past, Light willing!"
She takes the bracelet. "I will that it gets back to his lovely wife and child. Now, for you... stay inside, rest and wait for your friends."
30 Aug
CALLIN will be completely silent, simply letting the young man tell his tale. Noting that it seems almost therapuetic to TOBIAS to get all of it off his chest. When he is done CALLIN will rest his hand on TOBIAS' shoulder. "TOBIAS, fear not. the villagers are simply scared. Scared of what they don't understand, scared of lies spread by someone who is scared and can't face the death he has seen, nor can he face his own cowardace in battle. I think I will have a way to get through to the people. But it won't happen overnight. It will take time. So stay strong with the LIGHT. let it warm your heart and guide your way. You are a good man TOBIAS. You are very powerful, you you manage your power with great responsibility. THAT is a sign of wisdom. So continue to be wise. And let me see what I can do to enlighten the people who their leader truely is"
30 Aug
TOBIAS: "I was scared too, CALLIN... I was afraid I'd have to leave Appleton, and they wouldn't let me back in, and that I'd be on my own again... thanks for listening... and understanding."
30 Aug
CALLIN: "It is ok to be scared TOBIAS. It is the only way to have courage. Courage is doing the right thing, even when you are afraid. In this case staying in Appleton would be the couragous thing to do! This town needs a leader, and that leader is you."
24 Aug
ATACIUS will organize a party to bring the needed stone from Athenum. When not helping TAKASHI with the militia training, he will survey the village's points of entrance, that is main roads but also places in between houses where where enemies could pour into. The idea is to close those spaces with static 'chevaux de frise' and the roads with movable ones that can be put in place at night or when the alarm is risen. The static ones could have ditches dug in front filled with sharp stakes.
28 Aug
The trip to the Athenum is an interesting one. The villagers get to about 300 yards and spy Apsuna and her flock. Their fear nearly gets the better of them, but with some convincing from the smallest member of the group (that would be you), they come with ... fearfully!
"You sure it won't eat us? Had no idea there was a ... uh... big bird this close! Will it eat our kids? What about the livestock?" one of the villagers asks, gripping his pitchfork tightly.
Apsuna wisely flies off with her flock as you approach, but comes back and lands on top of one of the surviving walls of the Athenum, to see what you all are doing. Two of the villagers who had been lifting one stone drop it and back away with gasps.
"Wind and Sky be with you, ATACIUS of the small people." Apsuna croaks and the villagers all gape at her. "I see you have brought new friends from your nest. What do you do with the stones of this place?"
Once told about the stones for the statue, she dips her head and ruffles her feathers.
"For your people, it will be a good reminder, such is the memory of the lesser lived kind! For me, his memory will be in the Sky as I tell his story to the ones above. We will not forget his kindness or his love!"
After a bit, the villagers warm up to Apsuna as she watches as several suitable stone blocks are placed on a travois to be taken back. She seems rather amused by the whole visit.
"Let your friend of the name TAKASHI know that I have not seen any of the althaenim close by. I hear the drums beat regularly on the wind. Be watchful! Soon, the mountains will unfreeze." she says to you before you leave.
28 Aug
"Apsuna, we thank you for your watchful eye on the mountains. I will relay the information to my friend. May the Wind carry you and your flock safely." says the littleling to the Bird Lord.
24 Aug
TAKASHI will continue training Claudia in the use of the battle axe he gave her, her new armor, and the bow. "We train in the winter to keep our skills sharp, our body fit, and our mind active. When spring comes and the thaw with it, we are then ready to face what may come!"
He will also continue to drill the militia with ATACIUS, as he is available."Instead of trusting some king far away, train now and trust your brother standing at your side! No man fights better than the one protecting his village with his neighbors at his left and right. Keep your shape, communicate, and if needed, be ready to fall back in an orderly manner to your secondary position."
25 Aug
Claudia continues to improve, to the point where she is as good with the bow as any of the hunters in the village. She proves that point by successfully harvesting some wild game on one such hunt, the pride in her face obvious as she quickly cleans and quarters the carcasses. The battle axe proves to be more challenging, but she shows a basic skill and knowledge.
The militia respond to your words, nodding amongst themselves. Clearly, you struck a positive nerve with appealing to their own sense of togetherness. As the drills pass, they begin to respond to a general sense of staying together. Even when you and ATACIUS surprise them with a mock attack, they quickly gather themselves and are able to show a united front. It would definitely give a group of bandits some pause, but orcs? It's hard enough for fully trained soldiers to stay in a fight against the blood-thirsty bestials.
Along with ATACIUS, working on village physical defense improves. The littleling surprises everyone with being a font of knowledge about small fortifications and improvements. Sharing what he learned with his clans growing up, it is clear to TAKASHI that littlelings would prove a challenge to fight, especially if confronting one of the clans on the move.
28 Aug
TAKASHI, to ATACIUS: "Too bad there aren't more of your folk in these areas. The local surroundings are wide open and seem to produce decent crops, and these folks could use the expertise you've managed to pick up from your kind. I am worried what might happen if the orcs come, though. There simply aren't enough experienced fighters here to provide a strong defense." @Gabriel Perez Gallardi
28 Aug
"I hear you friend. We'll just have to hope they find their mettle when the time comes, right? And it will be soon I fear. Apsuna haven't seen any Orcs but has heard their drums beat regularly. We'll have to be watchful, she said. That and that the mountains will unfreeze soon."
28 Aug
TAKASHI: "Once the passes thaw up, I expect we will see the first signs of their activity. If only we could find their leader and remove him - I wonder if that would decapitate their ambitions, so to speak?"
1 Sep
ATACIUS: "Funny you say that. I dreamed the Orc's army closing upon Appleton and Apsuna picked up their leader and they did rout before our attack!" the littleling says excitedly. "But, alas, it was just that, a dream..." he shrugs.
1 Sep
TAKASHI: "Let us hope that Apsuna and her flock are able to lend a wing in the event of attack, for I don't see Appleton holding out on its own for long."
24 Aug
GRAIAN will study as much as he can to build his knowledge of spells, looking to learn new ones, and the history around Ramathia in preparation for the return of his kin in the Spring.
28 Aug
The books from the Athenum give tantalizing hints and snippets of a story, if true, is incredible.
The book titled "The City's Legacy - a history of the ancient city of Ramathia" by the elf Calimo Larathaen is the most intriguing. In it, the very first chapter, the author tells of a time when elves held the island city, known then as Ricoer (in ancient Elven tongue, meaning "First City" or possibly "Freedom City"). When this book was written, roughly five hundred years ago, the author tells of old songs and stories that were still being told in archaic Elven style - bardic songs and poems. Between those songs and speculation by sages who lived in Ramathia at the time of the book's writing, Calimo believed that there were ruins deep under the then-cosmopolitan Ramathia that might date back to a "founding" by elves. The author had seen such ruins, and believed that there were more, but he did not have the funding to continue his search. He hoped that sales of the book might allow him to dig further.
Other books seem to hint at much the same, as well as talking about how Elves seemed to have diminished in their population, due to how rare it was for Elves to have children.
28 Aug
GRAIAN pomdered for some time on the knowleedge he had leant. thinking back to his childhood he remembered that there had not been many children in the village compared to the relative number in Appleton and Skalfier. Perhaps the Elven race was doomed regardless, becoming unsustainable, even more reason not to fight a stupid war against the humans. When the search party retrurns in the Spring he hopes Shaiman is with them, perhaps he could shed some light on this potential downfall the Elves face.
Realizing he has been ignoring his friends, and if he is honest would enjoy a break from studying, he goes for a walk to search for the others. They may be excited to hear about more ruins to explore......
29 Aug
GRAIAN finds TOBIAS frowning into one of the books from Athenum. He looks up happily as the elf approaches, brushes some hair from his face and says, "Graian! I'm glad you're here. Do you know what this language could be?" He holds up the book, which seems to be about some sort of magical experiments, and points to some notes written in an archaic language in the ledger.
30 Aug
GRAIAN: "Ah Tobias, good to see you around, let me see what have you got there." He takes the book and studies the notes. He spends some time looking at each notes and he seems to be talking very quietly to himself, after a fwe minutes he looks up at Tobias.
"This is Ancient Dwarf, Tobias. I cannot speak it but can read it, unfortunately the written word does not translate very well but I will do my best." He points to the nine notes in turn and gives his translation:
"True
Dwarf is an unatural creation
Myths of Overlord slaves
This is made of Magic
Facts are not made up
This is where the mark is
In addition to the other
Did others do this
I cannot see the secret."
30 Aug
TOBIAS smiles broadly at GRAIAN and says excitedly, "I thought so! I thought it was dwarf! We found this book near by where they had that dwarf body, remember? I think they were trying to figure out if the dwarves were made by mixing other things... or maybe they were trying to mix the dwarf and something else to make something new? See where it says there about 'the two specimens'?"
31 Aug
GRAIAN starts to read the passage Tobias is pointing to.
1 Sep
It is another margin note, in Common, and it reads: "Study on the two specimens must continue, the clues are clear!" and it's underlined twice.

Winter 60
With spring a mere 3 ten-days away, the focus has turned towards the groves - pruning the trees of damaged, diseased or dead branches, clearing of weeds at the base, removing bugs and applying some oils to the bark to kill other insects and problems.
TAKASHI
5 Sep
The militia practice has become more haphazard, with the focus of the village on taking care of the groves. Claudia's practice has become regular and she shows improvement across all skills - with the bow, most especially, but also with the axe. She seems more adept with a staff or club, to your eye, but she keeps at the training diligently. You estimate about 20 of the 90 or so volunteers are as capable as any militia could be - two teams worth of soldiers. The rest can do the basics and would reflect well in a typical levy unit.
You now have crude platforms at cardinal points around Appleton. They are roughly fifteen feet up, nestled against trees - little more than hunting tree stands with some camouflage, but far more than they had previously. As the weather starts to get a bit warmer, you set up a watch rotation so they are manned as much as possible. It's not a constant day/night watch, but they do the best they can.
5 Sep
TAKASHI understands that these folk are, at their base, farmers. He praises those that work the hardest, and encourages them all to take care of their farms and families as needed. "We need to eat first, to stay strong and be ready to fight if that time comes."
He'll continue his training with Claudia, and if she shows better skill with a club or staff, he will work that into their routine as well. He'll also start her on using a simple wooden shield, to train her in sword & board fighting.
TAKASHI: "So Claudia, I notice that young master TOBIAS has taken a keen interest in you these last few months. Sometimes, I worry for him, as he seems tortured by his memories at times. I hope that your spark lightens his darker moods."
5 Sep
Claudia is lining up a shot from her bow as you ask that question. She freezes and her faces goes through three different shades of red. The shot that she loosens flies far off course, thwacking into a barn side.
"OOPS!" she stammers and goes running off to retrieve the errant arrow. When she returns, she does everything she can to change the conversation, and after awhile, seems to regain her composure. For the next few days, she avoids any mention of TOBIAS as well as avoiding the young man himself.
6 Sep
TAKASHI chuckles at Claudia's apparent discomfort.
He says to himself (wistfully), "Ah, to be young again."
7 Sep
You have noticed on your patrols that the abandoned farmstead where you found signs of orcs has remained abandoned.
7 Sep
TAKASHI thinks to himself, "Perhaps they have been discouraged from returning here, and are seeking somewhere else with less meddlesome and dangerous people nearby. One can hope..."

Michelas has made significant progress in the sculpture of Sir Flinigan and Christine. She has even started roughing out the larger stone, to where you can see there will be two figures in the final piece. Her drawings are uncanny in how much they resemble the two - albeit a bit younger than when you met the aging Knight.
Almost every family has at least one wagon and some sort of draft animal. Sir Flinigan kept several donkeys and four wagons himself, so there is some extra capacity. The problem is moving close to 500 people in a hurry. It won't be pretty, especially as these folks are not used to moving. Still, some memories of forty years ago, when the Bestials attacked in force, remains and the old timers seems to respond favorably to your questions, although with some reluctance at remembering those awful days when it seemed like the Orcs and Goblyns might win.
7 Sep
ATACIUS will try to make sure everyone he talks to, understand that there's a possibility we all would need to move and that it is better to be prepared. He respects the elder's reluctance to talk about the old days, but is their experience that will help the younger ones understand why we're doing what we're doing.
He will also talk with the ones that generally go out hunting and trapping, about scaling those small game traps to catch a human-sized creature. Maybe we could set some in the abandoned farmsteads and mark them in a way nobody accidentally fall into them.
11 Sep
There's some grumbling and even a couple of folks who go talk to "Sir Takashi" first, but after hearing a bit from him, they come back to you with a new-found respect.
The hunters you talk to nod, but they seem sceptical about setting traps in the abandoned farmesteads.
"Be more likely ta catch one o'th' Afflicted, than those wiley Orcs. Damn beasts are smart and cunnin'. Me Pa use ta tell stories when he was a soljer w' the Marshal back then, now that was a real Marshal, not the idjit there taday, I can tell you!"
One of the trappers agrees to help you set such traps up, it would take about a day per homestead. How do you want to proceed? @Gabriel Perez Gallardi
11 Sep
We will focus on the ones to the West, starting with the nearest to Appleton and then moving further away from the village. ATACIUS will tell the rest about this plan, so they can warn the vllagers not to wander into the abandoned places. Also will suggest TAKASHI to set up regular patrols to see if any traps have been sprung.

The studies are proving fruitful and you can feel certain avenues of thought and inquiry coming to a close with these books. The owner was clearly a genius at magical thought and his book choices reflect the depth of his knowledge and interests. You can't help but feel as if he tended towards a more dark outlook, but the Athenum itself is proof of that.
7 Sep
GRAIAN will reflect upon what he has learnt, making notes about the history of the Elven race and Ramathia for when the exploreres return. He will then organize what he has read about magic, including the darker elements, to aid his training.
CALLIN
5 Sep
It is clear, the closer you look at the issue, that Philippe could be considered a ring-leader of the grudge against TOBIAS. He seems to have managed to tap into a long-dormant resentment against magic in general, combined with the loss of Sir Flinigan as a steady, constant bedrock of a leader, along with the fear of Bestials and Delmonte. It's a powerful cocktail and one that a cross-section of the village populace seems to be willing to consume. You get the sense that a majority are tolerant or appreciative of the young man, but there is a large enough part of the population that doesn't share that tolerance.

Does Philippe attend the services CALLIN has been having? If so he will attempt to reach out to him after the service. If not then he will attempt to catch up with him at his home.
5 Sep
Yes, he does. He seems rather fervent in his prayers, but he also seems to have the temperment of a bully, that you notice in conversations and around town.
6 Sep
CALLIN will come up to Philippe after service. "Philippe, do you have a moment that we may speak? I have noticed your fervernt prayer, and I have a few questions."
7 Sep
Philippe looks surprised at your attention to him, but he nods. "Yes, Priest Callin? What is it?" he says politely.
7 Sep
CALLIN: "As I said I noticed your prayer of late has been quite intense. Why the sudden change? Is everything all right? I have a nose for the darkness, I wish to make sure it is not in the air."
7 Sep
Philippe looks even more surprised. "Change, Priest? I've always been faithful to the Light! Always come for my prayers!"
7 Sep
CALLIN: "Oh, I am not questioning your faithfulness Philippe, I only note that your prayers have been much more intense that usual. I was wondering why?"
7 Sep
"Seems like we're headin' to hard times, hard times, Priest. W' orcs running around 'n bandits, and now the King not carin' so much for us... seems like hard times."
7 Sep
CALLIN: "Hard times indeed, which is why we turn to the LIGHT to shine upon the darkness. But something still seems to be shrouded in darkness...." CALLIN pauses and then looks directly into Philippe's eyes "Tell me a Priest of the LIGHT, what happened during your patrol with TOBIAS." CALLIN will keep a hard look on the man (Not threatening, more like a father to a child ), to see if perhaps being so faithful, he will be less inclined to lie.

Philippe swallows hard and tears come to his eyes. He looks around quickly and then speaks quickly and slowly...
Well, Priest, y'see... coupl'a young tyros, they be out at the west ponds, lookin' t' fish. They saw orcs! So me, Yoni 'n Matt, we was gonna go see what they were 'bout to. Matt, he be wantin' ta bring ... (and he gulps hard and opens his mouth a couple of times...) .. bring Tobias wi'. I din' want to, but Matt, he was certain to bring 'im along.
So we went, all quiet like. I wan' for us to be soundin' like we be a big force, but ... the wizard (he says it quickly, almost with a spit) he woul' have none o' that and kept Matt w' him, I guess ta guard him. We get up to the pond, the wizard is carryin' on and the orcs heard us! It got all quiet and all I remember is hearin' one o' them Orcs roarin' 'n seein.. 'n seein... (the tears come harder and his face is pale with relived fear...) ... Matt GET KILT! Then Yoni, right next ta me... he shoved a sword in her thrut... n...
(It takes a moment for the young man to collect himself, and now his face grows angry.)
'n that wizard, he be standin' there doin' nothin' and suddenly.. I don't know, he was standin over me and tellin' me he cast a spell that made me fall 'sleep! The orcs, they jus' be lyin' there and so was m'frens... and he's all proud 'o himsef for 'sorcelin' me! Instead 'o lis'nin ta what I said, he trampin' all 'round like some proud cock'o'walk, lettin' those damn beasts know we hear, 'n 'stead o' savin' Matt 'n Yoni, he just sorcels me and acts like he had nuttin' o' do wi' it.
Ma 'n Pa always say no good come o' no wizards 'n now we see it. Before long, he be burnin' the village down and dancin' round in the moon w' witches 'n demons and beasts! You mark my words!
(He digs at his eyes in anger, to stop the tears. He is shaking hard with fear and anger.)
So that's w'happened Priest, the Light shine me iffin' I tell lies! That brat be danger t'us all. I know ye be 'is friend, and I guess y'will not let me back t'ye service, but iffin ye throw in with black magic, th'n what .. (and now his eyes go wide with completing that thought to its conclusion...)
He takes a step back in fear of you now.

Phillipe. You are always able to attend service. I am mearly a messanger of the LIGHT and all are welcome to attend, worship, and hear the word. .... " CALLIN can only feel pity for the man " I'm sorry that your friends fell in battle. Orcs are indeed dangerous. But let us think about what you just told me. Did Tobias slay your friends? Did Black Magic cast a spell on your friends that caused them to perish? No, you were ambushed by Orcs, very skilled and dangerous warriors. Not something to be taken lightly. Now first and formost I am a man of the Light Phillipe, and I understand your pain, frustration and anger. You lost friends. And I know you are angry because TOBIAS did not help save them in time. That is the real issue isn't it? That Tobias could have done something but didn't? But remember TOBIAS is young, and not an experienced warrior, he was supprised just as you were. Do you blame yourself for not acting quicker to bring your blade to bear? If you do, you should not bear that weight. The world, it can be a cold place, and it is up to us, ALL of us to bring the LIGHT into the world. To shine upon the darkness. Now I will tell you that I know a little bit about magic. I have faced necromancers, wizards, shamans, and undead the likes you will never know. I have seen that magic is just like a hammer. It can be dangerous, it can kill, it can destroy. But it can also build, create and help when needed. It is mearly a tool. The person wielding the hammer decides if it is good or bad. With that said, what has TOBIAS done except help this town? Did he not go off to protect Appleton once the Orcs were sited? Did he not help us not only remove the DAMNED from the nearby farm, but ALSO help us CURE one of the DAMNED so that she might lead a normal life? TOBIAS is young and he can and will make mistakes like all of us. And he is powerful, but he has a home here. The first in his whole life. Sir Finnagan made sure to surround TOBIAS with friends and family. That is the LIGHT at work. Helping to guide TOBIAS to use his power for good. Now I want you to think about this for a momment. Do you think that raising the town against TOBIAS well help him down a path of LIGHT. One of love and compassion? I would fear that leaving someone alone, out in the cold, away from all he knows and loves, that sounds like a good way to create a monster. So I ask you Phillip, if you are truely a man of the LIGHT, if you believe in what it means to follow the LIGHT. To believe in man, what he can do, his inner strength, in his ability to be good, and pure, to show love and compassion. I would ask you to be a man of the Light and beleive in TOBIAS. " CALLIN smiles at the man. " May the LIGHT guide you and keep you, man it Shine upon you. "

(That deserves a new reaction roll with some bonus for the way you appealed to him. Michael S (chgowiz) rolled 3, 3 on 2d6 +2 for a total of 8)
Philippe listens to CALLIN's speech, as do a couple of other people who had come up to the shrine after the services, while you were speaking to him.
He swallows hard, looks down and shifts back and forth uncomfortably. When you finish, there is a long.... pregnant.... pause.... The three others who had come up look at Philippe. He moves a rock on the ground with his toe and then...
... he nods.
"I guess ye right, Priest. Never thought 'o that way. 'e's jess so damn different... and 'e was always Sir's fav'rite. Jus' don' seem right, but ye right. 'e was tryin' ta help. It jus' seem like the stories me Pa tells about the orcs... fierce 'n bringin' death w'em."
He scrubs again at his eyes.
"Thank ye, Priest." he says and then walks away quickly. Two of the people go after Philippe while the third, a young man, remains for a moment.
"'E's not a bad sort. Ye're as patient w' 'im as the Knight was. Thank ye." he says, he bows with his hands clasped as one does towards the clergy of Light, and then goes running off after Philippe.

CALLIN: "No, no he is not. Go forth into the Light, may it shine upon you and guide you" Callin offers a prayer for the young man as he heads off after Philippe.
TOBIAS

GRAIAN seems to be able to tie together the various concepts gleaned from the books far easier than you are able. It is as if the knowledge there is teasing you. You can tell that there is much in them, but some key element seems to be out of reach. Some bit of knowledge, or something that makes sense of all this - it just seems to be on the edge of your mind.
There are some in the militia who will not talk to you, choosing to walk away when you approach them. Others are more receptive and there are a couple who agree with your approach... provided that "Sir TAKASHI" agrees. You get the feeling that in some people's minds, TAKASHI is replacing Sir Flinigan in their view of a village protector, perhaps even leader.
7 Sep
TOBIAS doesn't really care much who leads the village. What he's done so far has been out of a sense that, since he'll never really be able to pay back Sir Flinigan for his kindness, he should protect and build up the village as best he can, which is probably what Sir Flinigan would have wanted.
TOBIAS will concentrate on what's important, unlocking that knowledge...

(I will handle the rest of the month in private, then, if there's nothing else you'd like to do.)

Ok.
