Southern Seas - Act 16 - Winter 57 AD
Before leaving Skalfier, TOBIAS takes GRAIAN and TAKASHI to Tomfrey's shop in the Dawnsedge neighborhood. It takes a bit of time for TOBIAS to remember how to find it, but the sight of the large warrior keeps most folks on the other side of the street. Eventually, he leads you to a ramshackle storefront wedged in between two similar larger buildings. Inside, GRAIAN, you can see that this is a shop that deals in the arcane. A short plug of an ugly man stomps out from the rear to inquire what your business is.
Upon seeing the object that TAKASHI bears, Tomfrey identifies it as an "orrery" - an instrument that apparently tracks the movement of the Sun as well as the "Sisters" - bright star-like objects in the sky that can only be seen at Dawn or Dusk. It also seems to track two other objects, but Tomfrey says he's not sure what they are. He offers you 325 gold crowns for it.
(If you wish to haggle, leave a comment here and we'll hammer it out.)
(GRAIAN and TOBIAS, if you wish to pick up items here, that's OK as well, just leave a comment and we'll go through the prices)
The trip to Appleton is uneventful, save that you meet a band of travellers heading to Skalfier from the city of Dawn. They are led by a man named Arthurius. They are excited to get to Skalfier to "investigate" myths and stories - an abandoned mansion, a supposed lost religious shrine, a ghostship. They don't appear to be experienced adventurers, probably barely able to run away from bandits, but they are very eager.
When you get to Appleton, they are busy setting up and then celebrating the Harvest End feast, a time of great celebrating, dancing, eating and preparing for the Winter. The harvest was fair, not spectacular, but enough to feed family and provide for sale to provide coin for the coming year.
For the first thirty days of Winter, the weather is relatively clear, although cool to chilly. There is some rain, making travel on the dirt roads a bit slower, but that passes and the ground dries after a week.
At a gathering of the villagers after evening prayers, they listen to all of you advise them to create watchtowers and raise a militia. About a third of the men and boys raise their hand when asked about experience - it seems that the tradition of a two week militia drill at large towns, cities and Keeps is still alive and they have a bit of experience at some basic skills, especially with spears, javelins and bows. There is agreement that the bandits are likely to hear of Flinigan's death and see if they can exploit it.
"Truth be told, we loved Sir..." one of the villagers, Richard, explains. "... but as he got older, we worried he wouldn't be able to protect us. Now that ye're here, we'd be happy ta follow ye and make sure we'uns protect ourselves."
Several of the folks listen to TOBIAS and nod in agreement. "Sir left the manor to young Master TOBIAS." one of the elderly women say. "I think he's right to say we need to make sure we protect ourselves!"
It's suggested by a couple of villagers that volunteers go to some safe abandoned farmsteads and collect the wood there to put up watchtowers. They'd like to know what you suggest. These will be crude towers like ATACIUS shares, simple platforms more for warning than for serving as defensive positions. They also agree to weekly drills to be run by TAKASHI, although a couple of the younger women and one young man suggest that "The Priest" helps out as well. There seems to be a few crushes on CALLIN!
The 30th day of Winter comes very quickly...
31 Jan
TAKASHI - These thirty days are filled with Claudia's training. She is thrilled to have something to do during the Winter, and you find that she is improvingly quickly. She proves to be much better with the bow than with melee weapons such as your battle axe, although with her quick aptitude, she even manages to sneak in a hit now and again. One leaves a nice welt for a few days, but you can't complain - she walks away with many in a day.
"When travelling through dangerous places, it is always good to have your bow at hand. Some creatures are sly and will position themselves out of the reach of your axe, and others may fly. If they choose to close into melee, then you can loose an arrow and then draw your axe." you say to her and she nods. She quickly pulls her bow and shoots two grassdogs - there will be some extra meat on the table and you can see she has the potential to
Your horse rides around the village take you a few hours away. Claudia takes you to the main road that leads between the Keep and Skalfier. She takes you past some abandoned farmlands - once these lands were farmed, but with the Doom, the inhabitants died or left. Those that survived, many have since fled the bandits and orc raids.
One such trip takes you past an abandoned thorpe, north/nortwest of the Athenum, which to your eyes doesn't look too abandoned. You're not sure why you think this, but you'd bet some gold that someone has been here recently.
At dinner with Claudia and her parents, Marc and Ilya, they all listen with great attention to your stories of the Athenum and what you found. Marc himself is taken with tales of the Elves heading to Ramathia. He sheepishly admits to you after that as a boy, he often dreamed of sailing to the island city, even though it had only recently become "lost" to humans after the Doom. He wonders what they will find when they get there. "So many rumors of Pirate Kings and Queens, or dark monsters of the deep there!" he says.
The weekly militia drills go as about you'd expect - these are farmers, not trained warriors, but after a couple of drills, they are able to respond to calls of alarm and form up and divide up into groups. Out of the bunch, you figure you would have three effective teams (30 men/women total) to help protect the village, with the rest being support, last ditch soldiers, or sword fodder. A total of 90 people. It takes having CALLIN, ATACIUS and TOBIAS to help keep all 90 in order and participating.

TAKASHI will ask Claudia, her family, and the villagers (while training) what they know of the thorpe to the northwest of the Athenum. He does not wish to simply wander in without any knowledge that may be helpful.
1 Feb
(If TAKASHI mentions this to the group, ATACIUS would ask him to point it out on the map)
1 Feb
It is NW of the Athenum, very close to it.

You get some blank looks and shrugs of "there are lots of places" but one older woman tells you:
"That sounds like Kev's Farm. Lovely place, back in the day. He was a handsome man, he was, and I would've loved to been his wife with those lovely houses around. Shame when he died, and everyone up and left. Why do you ask?"
1 Feb
TAKASHI: "During one of our rides around the area, Claudia and I passed by it, and there seemed to be something... used about the place. As if it recently was disturbed. We'll give it a closer look tomorrow."
TAKASHI will inform the others that he and Claudia will be riding out to Kev's farm on the morrow, to arrive there at first light. If any would like to come along, they are more than welcome.
TAKASHI: "My fear is that it may be used as a base for those interested in Appleton, and us."
2 Feb
CALLIN will always accompany his friend. "Always good to travel with numbers on our side. May the Light guide us"

GRAIAN, after a week of studying in Appleton, you're sure that by the end of Winter, you will have learned a great deal. [hint, hint] The mage that built or maintained the tomes in the Athenum seemed to have chosen his tomes well. It is taking awhile to go through some of the passages, they are at or above your range of knowledge. Perhaps there is more to be gained by going back?
One thing does seem to nag at you though... some of the tomes clearly are more Chaos-leaning than not. It seems to follow the theme of the Athenum.

GRAIAN will spend virtually all his time studying, sharing knowledge with Tobias as he finds it, at least showing him things of importance so as to aid his learning. He will take the odd trip to Skalifer to keep abreast of the happenings related to the expedition being planned to Ramathia, he very much wants to be part of that. While he does not want to disrupt the training and building of watch-towers, he is thinking a trip back to collect more information from the libraries would be useful.
1 Feb
You could do one trip to Skalfier to keep the studies going at the pace they need to be, as a trip is essentially 2 - 3 days - a day there, a day back. If you're OK with that, we'll proceed.
1 Feb
Perfect, that works!
2 Feb
Your trip to Skalfier is quiet, with the exception of watching a patrol of soldiers (most likely from the Keep, as they bore the heraldry of Marshal Reffyndi - "Vert, a pale or") visit a small thorpe near the road. It appears to be a normal part of their duty and you continue on your way uninterrupted.
A trio of Foamfollowers remain in Skalfier, doing some preparation, while waiting for Shaiman to return from Acoer with ships for the Search. Falwen, Cordil and Lyrtim are based in the Golden Coach and have been talking to sailors, captains and the Merchants Guild. They are excited to see you and the day is spent in talking about their hopes and plans. They are assuming they will need to establish some sort of supply chain to bring regular supplies while they create an outpost on the island from which to explore from. They're worried about the stories of pirates and beasts, although to their chagrin, none can actually pinpoint the source and numbers of either.
"We'll be sailing into unknown waters for sure, with many dangers around, if we believe what the humans are telling us!" Falwen sighs over a bottle of wine. "You'd think we would end up eaten alive the moment we sailed near the island. It's only a two day sail away, yet they act as if they dare not go a single bell nearer than a day, out of fear!"
They let you know that for now, they are well and have most everything prepare for an initial journey - food, water and perishables will be ready, while Shaiman will bring elves, equipment and weapons along with the ships. He hoped for 10, which would allow him to bring many elves with. He hoped to be back by Spring, to avoid the Winter currents and winds.

ATACIUS, the books are fascinating to read, when you can pry them from either GRAIAN's or TOBIAS's hands. They are very interested in them! With the help of some of the villagers, you can identify three new places on the map... let me know where you are looking or what you are looking for.
The books don't lay out any particular story about a mage's tomb, but Ramathia was quite the hotbed of arcane activity. It was a major Guild center when the Mage's Guild was active, and the Merchants' Guild Annal talks a lot about the guild and university, as well as mentioning the area around Skalfier as having "unusual places that some visiting mages might like to visit on the way to or from Ramathia."
Helping TAKASHI with the militia training is entertaining. As compared far more littlelings in a clan family would be able to defend folk and food, it seems that far fewer humans are able to really contribute. Maybe a third of them who manage to show up for training are able to effectively fight. Still, it's better than nothing, and some of the youngsters are enjoying the lessons in rock throwing - you're pretty sure there will be many a grassdog and bird that will be in village pots shortly.

ATACIUS would like to know, if possible, 1) if the keep and watchtoweres to the West of Appleton are manned (if so by who) or abandoned, [ Are you asking about Mount Keep and Orc Watch?] 2) what's the name of the watch tower on the western border of the Roughlands, and if it's manned (if so by who) or abandoned, and 3) characteristics of the Roughlands and any place of worth, myth or legend in the area.
1 Feb
(OK, I was being generic, but will probably get a generic answer. So, being specific, I'd go fo Mount Keep.)
1 Feb
I can do both! I just wanted to be clear that's what you were asking about on the map.
1 Feb
(Oh, OK then. )
1 Feb
Mount Keep and Orc Watch: "Well... those are a day or so away, as ye walk, so ye might jes' go there ye'self.. but I reckon they ain't used t'much at'all. Marshal, he keeps most his men in the Keep or in Skalfier and he's not had so many men in years. Seems he 'n th' Duchess don' see eye ta eye, and p'raps thats why. Orcs have always come a time or two now and then, but they've stayed mostly close to the mountains... mostly. I think those two places use ta be for the Duchess's troops to keep watch on the beasts."
The watch tower on the western borders of the Roughlands: "Nope, ain't heerd nuthin' 'bout that place. Prob'ly full o' bandits or spiders. Big ones too... My grammy kilt a big old spider once, big as a horse, she swore!"
The Roughlands: Most just shrug their shoulders and give you generic answers of "bad lands, no place for folks!" but it is the visiting acolyte, Hamiette, who is simply enchanted at meeting a "REAL LIFE LITTLELING *squee*" who tells you about it.
"The Roughlands... the way the southern Orreterra mountains are shaped, they create a channel of wind and weather that has, over the years, scrubbed that stretch of land clean. Mostly rock, some scrub and not very friendly for habitation. It's mostly avoided, though there are rumors of bandits and even Delmonte himself living in a huge castle there!" she says in a singsong school-recital voice. She then blushes and confesses "I like geography!"
1 Feb
ATACIUS takes as much notes as he can while talking to the villagers and thanks them for their invaluable input. He hearty laughs at Hamiette's freshness and carefully notes down what she says about the Roughlands. After knowing her interest in geography, he offers her to see the map as he updates it.
"I thought that Delmonte's hideout was here (pointing at the mountains NW of Athenum and crossing his prevous notes) but, according to the villagers, there might be Orcs there! And if you say that 'Delmonte himself is living in a huge castle' in the Roughlands, maybe it's here (points at Dawn's Watch) where he's hiding... that'd make sense right?" he wonders aloud as he excitedly scribbles over the map. "And, and if the western keep is abandoned and there are Orcs in the mountains..." he gasps wide-eyed "...maybe, maybe they occupied it! And that's only a day's march from here!"
He hurriedly rolls the map and takes Hamiette by the hand. "Come kid! Let's find TAKASHI!"
31 Jan
TOBIAS - there is indeed space in Flinigan's manor for all of you, although a couple of walls and ceilings need some patching to make them weather proof.
Your gift of the book "Investigating the White Keep" to Claudia is a hit! She grabs it from you, gives you a kiss on the cheek and runs to TAKASHI to show him the book. Every evening, you see her sitting outside her house, reading the pages, slowly. Sometimes she'll ask you for help with a word, and flashes you shy smiles when you do so.
When not participating in helping with the village militia or watching Claudia training with TAKASHI, you are reading those books and coming to the same conclusion that GRAIAN is (that you will increase your knowledge if you keep up with it all Winter.).

Just a small thing, if there's someone in the village with carpentry or stoneworking skills, or whatever is required to patch those holes, TOBIAS will see if they're available for hire and if he has enough in his savings he'll do it.
1 Feb
ATACIUS, as his financial advisor, would suggest that the group make a pool of gold, each contributing a fixed ammount each month, so we can use that money to make repairs to the manor or whatever is needed for. If he agrees we can start with 10 gold coins each and then see if it's enough or not. ATACIUS offers to administrate the funds and oversee that the repairs are done.
1 Feb
TOBIAS heeds ATACIUS' wise council, and takes him up on his offer! "Thanks, ATACIUS!" he says, "I'll need your help with this kind of stuff, Sir Flinigan never told me much about what he did with his gold to help the village."
1 Feb
TAKASHI suggest using the just-sold orrery funds for improvements (325 gp).
1 Feb
TOBIAS, while all the villagers smile and nod at your offers, you find that they gently, but without exception, refuse payment to fix up the manor. It is finally Enid, with her sour face, that bluntly makes it clear as to why.
"It is not you, young Master, but in honor of the memory of your ward and our protector, Sir Flinigan and his lovely wife, that they do this. YOUR duty is to smile, thank them and let them honor their memories and love with this."
She turns on her heel and goes back to the kitchen, shutting the door firmly behind her. The sharp eared among you who might have seen this will hear quiet sobs.
1 Feb
TOBIAS, oblivious, says to himself, "Well, I just thought it would be the fair thing, to pay them for all that work..." as he turns and walks away.
1 Feb
TAKASHI walks away with TOBIAS, watching the young man.
TAKASHI: "It appears that you have much to live up to here in Appleton. That is a good thing, TOBIAS. For if we never reach, we never grab hold."
1 Feb
TOBIAS: "I guess so, TAKASHI, but I never wanted it. I just wanted to learn more magic. But now I want to do right by the people here, too."
He stops in mid-stride and looks up at TAKASHI. "Do you think they would like it if we took that gold we were going to use to patch up the manor, and used it to make a monument to Sir Flinigan? Like, a statue what looks like him?"
1 Feb
TAKASHI: "A statue of Sir Flinnigan, AND his wife, I think. It would serve as a reminder to all of us here of the good that conquers all, even though times seem dark."
1 Feb
TOBIAS smiles and nods in agreement.
TAKASHI turns away from TOBIAS and collects himself, although TOBIAS thinks that he may have seen TAKASHI wipe at his eye. After a second, he turns back and continues walking with TOBIAS.
TAKASHI: "A good idea, TOBIAS. A very good idea. It is a very good idea to remember those we have lost."
1 Feb
TOBIAS: "Are you ok? Let's go find ATACIUS, I'll bet he knows someone what knows how to build statues."
1 Feb
TAKASHI: "Yes, let's."
2 Feb
CALLIN - your days in Appleton are a tonic to the news that Maria gave you. Days pass quietly with all of the villagers visiting at one time or another to the small shrine you've created. Some of the villagers provide food and drink in an attempt to bribe you into teaching some of the children their letters and numbers.
You can look into building a home or take the room provided by TOBIAS in Flinigan's manor. It's completely up to you. By the 30th day, villagers have warmed up to you enough as a Priest of the Light that you can easily find help and they would probably do it out of the goodness of their hearts.
CALLIN would happily continue using the room TOBIAS has provided. CALLIN is humble, only wishing not to impose on TOBIAS. In that case, CALLIN will donate what is needed to help with the town in building defenses and the Shrine.
Between ATACIUS's jokes and comments, and TAKASHI's training, it's a heart warming sight to see the villagers trying to form an effective militia. Even if a couple of arrows come sailing too close to you, and one of the young women tries to brain you with a misplaced swing of a spear haft...
Maria pays you a visit on the 28th day, which is a clear and chilly day. She comes riding up on a horse with two young acolytes riding alongside. These are new acolytes that you've not met yet - Hamiette and Gregory. They are quiet and trying very hard to be good priests and attentive to Maria, and she takes about ten minutes of that and then shooes them away.
The villagers are awestruck to have a High Curate visiting their village and the visit serves as the reason for an impromptu feast. Maria sees your shrine and smiles and nods. "Well done, Priest... I see this flock has a good shepherd keeping watch over them." She leads prayers for the next two days but does take time to both work out with TAKASHI (who she manages to thump rather soundly quite a few times, proving spry and smart with a staff and shield) and to speak with you.
31 Jan
"CALLIN, I seem to be the bearer of ill news, but there is yet even more happening." she sighs as she takes a large swig of a donated jug of hard cider. She smiles in approval of the drink and hands it to you.
"I've heard from Deneb that he was asked if his thugs could look for this so-called rogue priest and his friends. I believe that Deneb has done exactly that, so please be on the look out and be wary. I'd hate to see you fall afoul of those fucking louts."
"Nothing more, yet, about Delmonte and what the Priest in Dawn will do to talk to the Duchess. It takes time for news to travel - speed of the horse! I imagine that we'll know by end of Winter, probably in time for Spring."
"There's also something strange going on in Skalfier that has caught some attention. Someone is stealing bodies!" she shakes her head and makes the sign of the Light. "Rumors of a necromancer even! I can't even imagine who would do such a thing, but I've seen the empty graves with my own eyes... his most high ass sent me to go calm the families."
2 Feb
CALLIN: Takes a swig of the hard cider himself "I would not wish Appleton to be exposed to Deneb's thugs. Perhaps this Rogue Priest and his friends should find them first and have a discussion on the Light. How many of them travel as a group? As for necromany. I think a trip to Skalfier is in order. Should someone be attempting to raise the dead, we should put a stop to that. Is it safe for us to return to Skailfer?"
2 Feb
"I would never attempt to talk a good Priest out of a thumping on thugs!" Maria laughs but then she turns sober.
"The problem is the power that Deneb wields. It is said that as an Emissary, he is on the path to being one of the Lights, putting him next to His Holiness, the Brightest Flame. That power would extinguish you very quickly, and I don't wish that. For now, protect and defend, but I think that his thugs are not likely to bother Appleton, it seems very firmly in the brightness of the Light. It's the others who I worry about. Those who would be driven from the Light because of some fucking stupid ... " and she stops short and laughs.
"Ah, I'm going to start cursing and drinking and that's just not what I want these good people to see."
"As far as the necromancy rumors, I am worried about that as well. So many dead so quickly always seems to draw the worst. We had grave robbers after the earthquakes from the Summer, and now this." she hakes her head.
"I think that as long as you don't attract attention, you're fine for now. Deneb raised you to the level of Priest, so I have a feeling that he'll want to play power games with you... use this against you to hold you in his power, if he makes the connection. For now, it seems that Delmonte is the focus of his ire."
(If you have more you wish to discuss, we can do that, otherwise...)
Maria looks sadly at the empty jug. "Such wonderful brew, I should take a few with me for the long trip back..."
She stands up and unsteadily walks back towards the quarters she's been given. "Wonderful... most wonderful... "
9 Feb
31st Day of Winter - Appleton
The journey to the thorpe takes you past the area of the Athenum. You can see signs of Apsuna and her family in the distance, but they do not come to talk to you. (TAKASHI, you have spoken to Apsuna during your patrols, she is well but is happy that the Elves are gone.)
Upon reaching the outskirts of the thorpe, you see several buildings. This thorpe is bigger than a farmstead, but smaller than most villages. At most, 20 to 40 people live in thorpes. So there are about a dozen buildings, a mix of homes, barns and sheds. Most are dilapidated, but there are 2 sheds, 1 barn and 3 houses that appear serviceable.
TAKASHI, the thing that says "someone has been here" is that, to your warrior eye, the positioning of barrels, of open windows, it all spells "visibility for watching someone approach". It's obvious to you now.
You are 30 yards (90 feet) from the nearest building, which is a dilapidated shed. Beyond it are several other ruined sheds, and an intact barn and house.
9 Feb
What will you do?
9 Feb
CALLIN will follow TAKASHI's lead. Letting the warriors watchful eye choose our course of action.
9 Feb
TAKASHI (to CLAUDIA, but so all can here): "Look at the open windows, and the way that things have been recently moved here. In my experience, when you leave a house for some time, you will always close the windows to prevent damage from the environment. Someone has been or still is here. Be wary!
Claudia, have your bow ready, as will I. We will approach the nearest building directly. CALLIN and ATACIUS, approach from its flanks. TOBIAS and GRAIN, follow behind us a bit. And keep your eyes open for movement in the barn and house beyond."
24 Feb
ATACIUS will unmount his pony and move to the right flank, trying to keep himself hidden from anyone watching from the house/barn.
Are there any signs of the place being inhabited apart from what TAKASHI noticed? Smoke from the house, clothes hanging drying, piles of firewood, presence (smell, sounds, droppings) of domestic animals (dog, horses, chickens).
9 Feb
CLAUDIA nods. She doesn't have quite the nerves that she had at the farmhouse with the Damned, but she is on high alert and there's only the slightest tremble in her hands as she nocks an arrow and waits.
ATACIUS, nothing like that, no. It looks pretty deserted, but something does catch your thief's eye... the growth on the ground in some places may look a little trodden for this place being deserted.
(OOC: Until GRAIAN and TOBIAS confirm their participation [or not, either of which is OK], I'll handle most of this at a high level. For the moment, I'm not assuming them one way or the other)
9 Feb
CALLIN will nod, draw his War Hammer and Sir Flinnagan's Shield and move to the left flank. CALLIN will also chant a prayer to the Light to guide them on this adventure.
9 Feb
GRAIAN sighs, this was such a nice ride.... given that the last place was full of Damned he decides Stinking Cloud might be more appropriate. Staying on his horse he keeps slight behind the others, looking around him as they move.
10 Feb
Moving west past the shed and close to the intact barn and house, you see another intact house to the northwest about 30 feet alongside a fallen house and sheds, a central building that has collapsed and a barn to the southwest that is in ruins.
The intact barn's doors are closed. It looks like the house's doors are closed as well.
There are areas where the grass has matted down a bit. It could be animals nesting here, or something else?
10 Feb
TOBIAS thinks that the others are being silly. There's no one here! He shrugs and follows behind them.
10 Feb
TAKASHI will point out the matted down areas of grass to Claudia, and for now will walk around them. He and will motion Claudia that the barn is their destination, with each of them flanking a side of the closed barn door. He will silently watch to see what ATACIUS and CALLIN do before proceeding.
10 Feb
CALLIN will continue to flank on the left keeping his eyes peeled for any danger.
15 Feb
ATACIUS will move trying to remain hidden.
10 Feb
GRAIAN will continue to move forward until he is about 90' from the barn
10 Feb
TOBIAS will try to be a little closer, 50' away, on Claudia's side of the door.
10 Feb
Claudia nods and positions herself on one side of the door, her hands holding the axe at a ready position. She looks around at the others positioning themselves and then waits for TAKASHI to open the door.
10 Feb
TAKASHI nods at Claudia, and attempts to open the barn door and return to cover as quickly as possible. (If it pushes inward, he'll do that with his foot, trying to keep his bow readied and steady.)
15 Feb
It's the smell you notice first. That coppery smell of blood, followed by the scent of decay that grows on you, and becomes overpowering as the barn door opens further.
Inside is a gruesome sight. On the ground, some sort of strange charms and woodcarved figures surround a grotesque figure made out of stone. It has one eye, an open mouth full of teeth and is brandishing an axe and dagger. It's hard to tell if it's multi-armed or multi-legged. CALLIN, it's like nothing you've ever seen before.
It is splashed with blood and behind it is a pit with what appears to be burnt offerings.
The smell seems to come from a corner where there appears to be -- something -- piled, but you can't exactly see it yet.
Claudia gasps and makes retching noises, overcome by the smell and sight.
15 Feb
TAKASHI: "By the old gods, what abomination is this!?! Nevermind for now, we'll come back once the area is secured, but for now we need to check the other buildings. Let's check the house next."
With that, TAKASHI will motion to Claudia to follow him and carefully advance towards the house nearest to the barn.
16 Feb
CALLIN: "This place stinks of the darkness. We should purge this place to the the Light shine once again. " CALLIN then looks to TAKASHI after realizing what his friend said. "Yes let us clear the rest of the grounds."
16 Feb
TOBIAS looks shaken as he moves with the others towards the house. "Who could be doing this so close to Appleton? What if it's someone that already lives in the village?"
16 Feb
Claudia makes sure the door is closed, her face pale and splotchy from her shock at the sight.
At TOBIAS's words, she gasps. "Master TAKASHI... TOBIAS!!! Nobody would do such a thing! It has to be something else!" She looks uncertain and scared at the thought. "It has to be...." and she tightens her grip on her battle ax and tries to take deep breaths.
As you get near the house, there is no obvious sign that it is occupied. The door in the front is shut. A quick glance by ATACIUS tells him that it is locked. You can see into the house from the outside and ATACIUS can see that there are seven bedrolls or sleeping areas in the main room of the house and the remains of a fire in the fireplace. The general appearance is of a place that was recently occupied! The windows have been cleaned off, allowing someone inside to look out easily.
16 Feb
TAKASHI will peek through the corner of a window, and motion ATACIUS towards the door.
TAKASHI: "ATACIUS, do you think you can open this door up for us? Before we make a lot of noise?"
16 Feb
ATACIUS will quietly moves nextt to TAKASHI and nods at his request. He'll pull out his tools from the satchel and try to open the lock.
16 Feb
 rolled 1d100 for a total of 73 > 34 :(
16 Feb
The old lock resists ATACIUS's attempts to pick it, and he hears something fall off the handle on the inside. Nothing happens that he sees or hears.
16 Feb
GRAIAN dismounts and ties off his horse with the others then joins the group at the house "This is not a pleasant place", he looks around wondering if anyone, or thing, is watching them.
17 Feb
Your elven eyes and ears don't make anything out. It "looks" like it's deserted, but then there is what you found in the barn...
17 Feb
TAKASHI watches ATACIUS fumble with the lock, and grimaces when he hears the thump of something falling inside.
TAKASHI: "Let's check around the perimeter to see if there are any other entrances before we make more of a racket. CALLIN, ATACIUS, and GRAIN - you three go right. Claudia, TOBIAS, and I will go left. We'll meet in the back and decide what to do next."
With that, TAKASHI will lead the way, going counterclockwise around the home, looking for other doors, unlocked windows, or alternate forms of entrance/egress.
17 Feb
ATACIUS packs his tools back into the satchel without a word, and quietly proceeds to the right side of the house. Hand on his sword he takes a peek around the corner.
17 Feb
TOBIAS draws one of his daggers and tries to look brave for CLAUDIA as he follows her and TAKASHI around the house. Occasionally he looks back to make sure nothing is coming up behind them...
17 Feb
The house is plain, with a window in each wall. The two side wall windows (east and west) seem to look into smaller rooms. Both appear to be empty. The back wall has a small, covered wood rack, which has freshly chopped wood in it. Another covered enclosure seems to have been for smaller animals, and is empty and falling apart. The window in the back looks into what appears to be a food preparation area. This has evidence of meat being butchered, as there are blood stains that look fresh, and some bones on the floor. There are several stained sacks that might have something within. There are no other entrances. There is a small pen with a rotting fence behind the house that looks like it held animals.
17 Feb
TAKASHI: "Looks empty to me. There's one more house to scout, then we can relax a little more, perhaps."
TAKASHI will make his way towrds the other house, scanning the area for any threats as they make their way to the other house.
17 Feb
Does everyone else want to go into the first house, follow TAKASHI or do something else?
17 Feb
TOBIAS wants to keep following the well-armored folks with weapons...
17 Feb
ATACIUS will take a closer look at the kitchen window to see if there's a way to open it from outside without breaking it.
17 Feb
You might be able to slide a dagger and pry at it.
19 Feb
ATACIUS will try to pry it open with a dagger then.
17 Feb
GRAIAN will continue to the other house with Callin..... and assume Atacius will follow quickly
19 Feb
Ah, these elf's, always assuming... :)
20 Feb
TAKASHI, CALLIN, GRAIAN, TOBIAS and Claudia carefully approach the second intact house, which is NW of the first house. From the outside, it looks just as deserted, but like the first house, the door is closed. However, when you peek inside, it's a far different scene than the first house.
Where the first house was spartan in the bedrolls and sacks being the only visible sign of occupation, the scene in this house is opposite. Clutter, arranged in odd formations or perhaps charms or totems - such as a rake propped up against a wall, with pieces of what looks like skin and fur draped from it in deliberate fashion.
There are not bed rolls, but clumps of grass, dried leaves, sticks and bits of fur making what looks like nests or sleeping areas. There are five of these. There are bones and bits of dried meat scattered around the "nests" and what remains of the furniture has been broken up and shoved up against the fireplace, where the remains of a fire can be seen.
There is nobody in the front room that you can see.
In the stillness of the area, you hear something break from the house that you just left.
20 Feb
What will you do?
20 Feb
TOBIAS (looking around): "Where's ATACIUS?"
20 Feb
TAKASHI winces at the sound of something breaking in the distance.
TAKASHI: "Did anyone see what ATACIUS was drinking on the way out here this morning, perhaps?"
TAKASHI will stow his bow, and draw his sword and shield for close quarters fighting. Then, he will test to see if the front door is locked or not, gently trying to open the door.
20 Feb
The door is not locked and upon jiggling the handle, you hear something fall within with a clatter, perhaps bones? It has that sound of bones.
20 Feb
TAKASHI will softly countdown from 3 dow to 1, and upon reaching "0", he'll swing the door open and see what this house has in store for all of us.
20 Feb
Again, it's the smell that hits you. Whoever or whatever lives here does not bathe as the smell and stink is strong of sweat and other odors. There is a smell of rancid meat here and other odors that you'd rather not think about.
This front room has the aforementioned "nests" that I described. You can see that some sort of charm or figurine made out of bones is what fell to the floor, a crude way of perhaps letting someone know that the door had been opened. There are three exits from this room, one to the back, and one each left and right. There is nothing else of note in this room that you haven't seen already from the window.
There is no apparent reaction to your entry, and it is quiet, except for Claudia's quickened breath as she is right behind you.
20 Feb
TAKASHI will point Claudia towards the right door, motion to CALLIN to take the center door, and then will advance himself towards the left door.
20 Feb
TOBIAS frowns and puts his hand over his mouth and nose. He positions himself back behind CALLIN, but not directly behind so that he has a chance to see what's through the doorway if it opens.
20 Feb
GRAIAN is next to Tobias, wondering what they have started.
21 Feb
TAKASHI and CLAUDIA - The side rooms, are cluttered with broken bedframes and appear to have not been used by whoever was in the front room.
CALLIN, TOBIAS and GRAIAN - The back room, which is the kitchen, holds a horror. There are scraps of armor and clothing on the ground. As you look further, you realize that some of the bones are familiar looking -- humanoid for sure. The pile of scraps and rotted flesh in the corner tell the grisly tale.
GRAIAN - the armor looks elven in make.
21 Feb
TAKASHI, after making sure the room is clear, will move back to where the others are gathered - in front of the scene of horror.
TAKASHI: "This does not bode well, my friends."
21 Feb
You hear TOBIAS' muffled voice from behind his hand: "No kidding! So what do we do now?"
22 Feb
CALLIN: "By the LIGHT what vile darkness did this to these poor men" CALLIN will begin a prayer for the fallin adventurers.
22 Feb
ATACIUS: While going from one house to the other, the littleling will look if the horses are where we left them.
22 Feb
They are undisturbed.
ATACIUS enters the house his friends are, looking for something in his satchel. "Look what I found... Whoa! What's that smell!" he says stopping and covering his mouth and nose with his cloak.
22 Feb
TAKASHI: "If I am right, then I believe we have found some, if not all, of the missing elves that were sent up to this area some time ago. They found a grisly end, which I would like to avoid.
Whoever did this does not appear to be here right now, so perhaps a thorough search of the two houses, the barn, and the shed are in order. Then we need to figure out what we are going to do next..."
23 Feb
GRAIAN walks over to the remains and kneels down, resting his hands on the pile of bones "Farewell my Brothers may the winds fill the sails as the ships bear you back to the land of our forefathers. I swear that your fall will be revenged and those that inflcited this upon you will soon no longer walk this land." Standing up he looks at the others "My friends I humbly ask for your help to rid this land of the vile creatures that have done this."
23 Feb
CALLIN: joins GRAIAN and puts his hand on his shoulder. "I vow to stand at your side and rid the world of the darkness that brought this upon your brothers."
23 Feb
TAKASHI: "Friend, you need not even ask, though it is appreciated. We always do our best when we stand together."
23 Feb
GRAIAN:"Yes, together we are strong, thank you." He finds blankets and carefully wraps up the remains and armor, "I would like to take these brothers back to the sea for a peaceful final resting place."
22 Feb
ATACIUS skillfully slides a dagger into the window and it pops open, swinging inside. You see a cup fall from the top of the window, apparently a type of signal to let someone know that the window was opened.
20 Feb
(You may try to catch the cup, roll 4d6 and if it's equal/less than your DEX, you can tell me how you catch it!)
20 Feb
rolled 5, 2, 5, 6 on 4d6 for a total of 18 > 11
20 Feb
It falls juuuuuust beyond your fingertips, and smashes to the floor.
The good news is that nobody seems to be in the house to hear the cup fall.
ATACIUS will climb trhough the window into the house, dagger in hand.
20 Feb
The smell inside the "kitchen" is of dried, stale blood and rancid meat. There is a small water pump along one wall, and the door leading to the main room. As a result of being closer, the smell comes from the sacks and the staining looks like blood. There's nothing else of note in this area, as the cabinets and shelves are bare.
20 Feb
ATACIUS will stealthy approach the door, will open it slowly and peek through the crack.
20 Feb
You are looking into the main room that was visible from the front window. There is the door that leads outside. You see that when you jiggled the handle, a small rock wrapped in leather had fallen to the floor, a crude method of knowing if someone entered. There is an exit to the left and right as well, probably to the side rooms you saw from the outside. You don't see anyone here.
20 Feb
ATACIUS will look, before proceeding to check the side rooms, at the kitchen floor to see if there's any loose board that might hide a trapdoor to a basement.
21 Feb
You don't find anything in the kitchen that reveals a secret door or trap door.
The side rooms look unused, although tracks in the dust lead to the windows and back.
The sacks in the front room contain dried meats and some sort of pottery jugs stoppered with soft wood cones. The liquid inside is thick, smells sour and strong.
On one of the bedrolls is a small charm - it has a single eye carved into what appears to be bone.
21 Feb
ATACIUS will check if the other windows have similar 'alarms' like the front door or the kitchen window. Then he'll check if any of the bedrolls are warm before pocketing the bone charm.
21 Feb
The side windows have the leather wrapped rock set up to drop if the window is opened.
The bedrolls are not warm. They have an odor to them... not human, you know the stink of an unshowered long-leg.
You may put the charm in your inventory. There's nothing else in the other bedrolls.
21 Feb
ATACIUS 'How can they set all these traps on door and windows and leave the place?' the littleling wonders aloud. He'll kick the bedrolls to see if they conceal something. If it looks the place could have an attic he'll look around for the access to it.
21 Feb
The bedrolls don't hide anything and there is no sign that there was an attic.
And that's a very good question! :D
21 Feb
ATACIUS just shrugs at the conundrum. 'Clever bastards.' he mutters to himself. He will then absently gather all three leather-wrapped stones, leaving the windows open, and walk out the front door, leaving it also open, to look for his friends.
21 Feb
It's easy enough to figure that they are in the other house. You can go there, or explore other parts of the thorpe.
21 Feb
ATACIUS will go to the other house.
21 Feb
Sure go ahead and continue up above. :)
23 Feb
CLAUDIA catches a glimpse of what is in the kitchen and corner and her face goes pale. She rushes out of the house to the front and you can hear the sounds of retching and then some sobs. After a few minutes, she comes back in, her face pale, but her hands are tight around the battle axe and she seems determined.
23 Feb
TOBIAS is standing by the doorway when Claudia comes back in. He brushes some of the hair back from his eyes and asks softly, "Are you okay?"
23 Feb
CLAUDIA takes a deep breath.
"Yes, I'm OK, thank you." she says. Her voice is only a little shakey.
23 Feb
"What do we do now, Master?" Claudia asks TAKASHI.
23 Feb
TAKASHI: "I think a thorough search would be wise, now that the area appears to be threat free. What do the rest of you think?"
23 Feb
TOBIAS thinks for a minute, then says, "We probably should. But one of us should probably keep a watch outside, in case they come back, right?" with a quick side glance at Claudia and then back to TAKASHI.
23 Feb
TAKASHI: "Claudia and I can stand ready out here, and cover both avenues of approach, while the rest of you perform a thorough search. I'd hate to overlook some vital information before deciding what to do next."
23 Feb
After one last look at Claudia, TOBIAS goes back to the back room and starts poking around, first through the bits of armor and clothes, then checking around the walls and floor for any type of hidey-hole that someone might have used to hide something away.
24 Feb
CALLIN: "Agreed. Perhaps we should start with the barn. That seems to be the shrine that ties this all together. Also once we have searched, perhaps we should burn this dark place to timbers. If it is of importance to these creatures, perhaps they will come to us."
24 Feb
ATACIUS: "Remember when be burned the remains of the attacked caravan? That happened less than half-a-day from here to the NE. The orcs came to see what happened." says the littleling. "That means they'll be here anytime soon if we burn this place. We don't know how many will come and if we'll be enough to face them, because they won't be happy about it."
24 Feb
TAKASHI: "True. And I believe that those who did this are creatures of opportunity. Destroying this place will simply make them move on somewhere else. I think we would do best to pull the weed out by the roots, right here."
24 Feb
It takes about an hour to poke through the thorpe.
A more thorough search of the barn turns up little else - although it appears that a couple of the elves might have been sacrificed to the shrine in the barn - two humanoid skulls that could have been elves are in the pile of refuse and bits of flesh and bone in the corner.
Same with the houses. Whoever lived in the first house was spartan in their belongings as there is nothing aside from the bedrooms and "alarms" that had been left. The second house reveals little else - the furniture and some odds and ends of the original human inhabitants have been dumped in the two side rooms, and an almost animalistic living space and food preparation.
The rotted, fallen remains of the other buildings don't bear any secrets of who was here recently - their contents are debris and left-behind bits that speak to the human farmers that lived here once.
TAKASHI, you and Claudia do not see sign of anyone while the others search the thorpe.
It is now late morning.
24 Feb
ATACIUS: "When we came across the orcs, there were other beings with them, man-like but more... more savage looking." the littleling recalls. "One of them had this wicked necklace, with what looked like shrunken heads and carried this nasty dagger. Maybe it's thier shrine we found here."
24 Feb
TAKASHI: "Yes, well spotted ATACIUS. I wonder if our friend Apsuna and her flock have seen traces of this group in their flights around the area. Time for a decision, my friends. What do we do?
We could try and talk with Apsuna, which will take us time to travel to and speak with her. We could stay here and try to prepare an ambush, hoping that those who did this return and that we are strong enough to take them down. Thoughts?"
24 Feb
TOBIAS: "Did anyone see any signs of which way they came from, or went to? Maybe one of them dropped something what would give us an idea of which way to look."
27 Feb
@Chris@Joseph Schnurr@Gabriel Perez GallardiWhat do you wish to do? Follow TAKASHI's suggestion? Search for more clues? Burn the place down? Something else that hasn't been mentioned?
27 Feb
CALLIN: "Talking with Apsuna sounds like a good idea. Her eye to detail is uncanny. If anything has moved across this place, she would be aware of it. I feel we should offer her a gift as well. Best to spoil our friends. Do we have time to purchase a cow from Appleton? I do feel we need to purge this place once the creators of such carnage are delt with however. Places of darkness like this, have a tendancy to draw more darkness if left unchecked."
28 Feb
ATACIUS: "Warn Apsuna of what's going on is a good idea. Maybe she's seen something that could help us." he agrees.
28 Feb
TOBIAS groans at the thought of escorting a cow cross-country again. "Um... maybe I should... return to my studies, until we find out more."
28 Feb
So you're going to get a cow, then go back to Apsuna to talk - that's the plan I'm hearing? If nobody objects, I'll write to this later today.
28 Feb
TAKASHI nods at the plan. TAKASHI: "It is worth a shot, I think."
28 Feb
(If we're heading back to Appleton first, TOBIAS will stay at the house and hit the books when they head out again. Apsuna always makes him a little nervous, anyway.)
28 Feb
GRAIAN will also stay and study... Knowledge is good!
1 Mar
32nd day of Winter
The trip back to Appleton is short and sweet, but getting a cow during winter proves to be a bit more problematic. Appleton is a grove, and the livestock are kept for food and milk, not for breeding. A smaller, less producing heifer is grudgingly sold to TOBIAS for forty gold crowns.
While TOBIAS and GRAIAN study their books, CALLIN, TAKASHI and ATACIUS make their way back to the Athenum and Apsuna. As the ruins come into view, you see a few medium sized blackbirds take flight to circle high around you, but they apparently know you now, as they fly back to the ruins.
As you get closer, you can see that the flock has returned and is relatively quiet. The sight of small, medium and huge blackbirds sitting on the broken walls and trees of the Athenum is always an odd sight. Apsuna takes flight from the center of the Athenum and perches herself on a nearby wall. The cow "mooooos" in some alarm, and Apsuna's mouth drops open in bird laughter.
1 Mar
"It knows what its destiny is now..." she croaks. "And your gift will be welcome, winter is always a lean time for my children."
Apsuna dips her head. "I greet you again, my friends. I am glad to see that wind and sky has brought you here. I see that the elves are not among you... was your search for the leaves underneath a good one?"
1 Mar
TAKASHI: "The delve beneath the ground was a costly one, but we did find what was needed for the time being. I greatly dislike that place, though two of our group always seem to crave knowledge regardless of its origin or intent. Thankfully, we do not come here today to go back there, but only to seek your counsel and local knowledge."
1 Mar
ATACIUS: "And we found what happened to, what we think were, the first group of elves that delved into Athenum searching for leaves..." adds the littleling while he looks for something in one of his satchels.
1 Mar
CALLIN will bow deeply to Apsuna, and wiat for ATACIUS to finish his thought. 'So excited and he forgot to have his props ready' CALLIN thinks to himself. 'If I did that during a sermon, I'm certain the pews would laugh me right off the pulpit' A small smile comes across CALLIN's face as he muses...
1 Mar
ATACIUS becomes aware of the silence and looks up to find everyone watching at him.
1 Mar
TAKASHI: "What ATACIUS has mentioned is why we seek your counsel now. During my ridings around the outskirts of Appleton, we stumbled on to what initially appeared to be a small, abandoned settlement. However, something was off, and all of us went back there to examine it closely. What we found was most troubling - a primitive shrine had been erected in a barn, with grisly sacrificial offerings made, The deceased appear to be elves, which explains their disappearance.
It looks as if the elves may have been not only sacrificed, but eaten as well. Our initial thoughts were of orcs or other bestials in the area. With your sharp eyes and wide ranging flights, we were wondering if you might have seen anything unusual in those parts."
1 Mar
ATACIUS: "I couldn't have said it better!" he adds. "Also found this..." as he shows everyone the eye carved out of bone.
2 Mar
Apsuna ruffles her feathers at TAKASHI's story.
"In the direction of the twin that is nearer to the setting sun? There are many nests that Men have abandoned, but this place, yes, I know of what you speak for a good reason. Those who skulk there, they attacked some of my children only when they flew close. They are protecting their nest and do not bother us, though we have seen them sneaking around. Some are like Men, but wild. Some are of the "althaenim". If they have killed the Elves who attacked my family... I am sorry for the sadness that your friends feel, but I will not mourn their deaths for having killed of my family."
"The wild Men and the althaenim, those you call Orcs - they travel together or sometimes separate. They come and go in many directions, returning to the mountains. They have done this since the last time the sky and land turned cold. More, I cannot say as they have kept to themselves and therefore so have we."
She turns an eye to the charm that ATACIUS holds. "That symbol stirs a faded memory, little one. Of long ago, when I was a hatchling. Of fluttering things of color and symbols. This, I think, was held by the althaenim. In the mountains."
3 Mar
ATACIUS: "On your flights over the abandoned human nests near the mountains, have you seen wild Men and althaenim? If so, can you say how many you have seen? Any bit of information would be of great help to protect the still inhabited nests. We value your council and appreciate your friendship." says the littleling putting away the charm.
3 Mar
Apsuna makes a movement with her head and you realize after a moment that she's shaking it. "I have not noticed, my little friend. If I may, do you notice the ants that move and which ones were big and which ones were small? It is so when we move across the sky. I remember these only that they threatened my children. I do see wild Men and althaenim as we fly, in various places, not too close to Men and their nests, but not too far either. They have not marched to War in awhile, but I also have not flown in the mountains as often as I used to when I was younger."
"The food is much better closer to the Great Water!" and she drops her beak in her manner of laughing.
3 Mar
ATACIUS: "Your wisdom is humbling, great Apsuna." he says with a bow.
3 Mar
Apsuna drops her beak again. "Hardly... my stomach tells me where it is better to go!"
3 Mar
ATACIUS: "We're not that different there!"
3 Mar
CALLIN: "thank you so much for your help Apsuna. It is so good to talk with you again. Having a friendship with you is indeed a blessing." With that CALLIN will bow deeply to Apsuna.
6 Mar
Apsuna croaks "I do keep a watch over your nest as well. Although you are not of my children, you are my friends and I honor you and the memory of my good friend Flingan. If I see those wild men and althaenim about, I will let you know."
She then dips her head. "May Wind and Sky guide you ever onward my friends."
She beats her wings and begins to rise, then adjusts her angle to fly over the cow, deftly grabbing it with her claws. The cow lets out an alarmed bellow, but Apsuna takes it over the wall and out of view, where the cow's cries quickly silence as the flock rises and begins to circle and dip.
The day is still early, what will you do now?
6 Mar
CALLIN: "I fear we will not find the wild men and orcs should we look in their native wildlands. It would be best to draw them to us if we wish to deal with them now. Or we rely on patience and Apsuna's eye. I do not like leaving such a hive of Darkness this close to Appleton. I would think that preparing for an attack and then burning down the evil they have created would draw them into a trap. Like a fly to a web. What do the rest of you think?"
6 Mar
TAKASHI: "It is my experience that if they find a comfortable nest, then these fould things will often return there again and again. They went to the trouble of creating a religious shrine, so I bet that they will be back.
Perhaps we should return there and attempt to ambush them when/if they return. We could search for any signs of their passing to or from the settlement, and then set up an ambush just before reaching the settlement."
7 Mar
ATACIUS: "I agree with CALLIN's plan. Besides we may want to check any other farmsteads or thorpes this side of Appleton for signs of these wild men. Also, according to the map we got from the Library, there's a keep and a watchtower to the West that we may like to investigate too."
6 Mar
CALLIN: "Do you think we should visit the watchtower to see if we can spot the Orcs from it's vantage point?"
6 Mar
ATACIUS: "All I'm saying is we would like to know if the wild men or the Orcs have made a permanent residency in those palces. We need to know our neighborhood."
6 Mar
CALLIN: "I agree! As the protectors of Appleton we need to ensure it's safety. I was only wondering if you think attempting to scan from the watchtower would be an efficent way to track such creatures. Your eye is much keener than mine, so you would be the better judge of such things."
6 Mar
ATACIUS: "Oh, yes I can do that!"
6 Mar
TAKASHI: "Let's go back to Appleton and discuss our options with the two more studious members of the group. We have lots of good ideas..."
6 Mar
It is midday by the time you return from the Athenum to Appleton.
Feel free to discuss. Depending on your plans. we'll advance time to a logical point after you're done discussing. Or when the DM gets bored of waiting... ;)
6 Mar
TOBIAS is a little nervous that the fire might get out of hand - he learned his lesson in the Athenum! - but he thinks CALLIN's plan is good.
7 Mar
TAKASHI: "Well, trying to scout out the area and visiting these other locations is on our to-do list anyway, so we'll hopefully get two birds with one stone!"
7 Mar
CALLIN: "So should we explore the other locations first? My concern there is they may return to the farm and be better prepared to deal with us having fortifications in the homes and barns. Should we at least set traps at the farmhouse we already explored before venturing to other places?"
7 Mar
CALLIN, as you say those words, a thought enters your mind of someone being trapped and suffering, dying unjustly. Another thought flickers from some teachings of the justness of imprisoning law-breakers to be taken to justice.
7 Mar
CALLIN: Bows his head shaking it as he realizes how foolish his words are. "How selfish of me. Setting Traps may catch unlikely victims. That is not the way of the Light. We should avoid doing anything that might harm others. So if we do wish to burn the alters they have created, we should ensure we prepare so that the fire will not spread to the surrounding forest."
7 Mar
ATACIUS: "If you're worried about our numbers, as we all are I guess, we can make some dummies. From the distance it'll look we're more than we really are. We can stuff sacks with hay or leaves, a couple of wooden sticks as legs, maybe pumpkins as heads." suggests the littleling. "Don't look at that way, just throwing some ideas here!" he adds with a laugh.
7 Mar
GRAIAN remembering the last time they met the group after the caravan incident "Suprise is going to be important if we are to take them on. Did you get an understanding of how many were staying at the place?"
7 Mar
ATACIUS: "I'd say a dozen at a time."
7 Mar
GRAIAN: "Well only 2 to 1, seems we have the odds in our favor," he chuckles, although his expression is not quite as relaxed.
8 Mar
So I've heard a couple of ideas - wait at the thorpe for the "inhabitants" to return, maybe trap them or set up some sort of welcome, explore some of the other places that ATACIUS spoke of. Any preference on which one? Or a third option that I'm not seeing you discuss yet?
8 Mar
TAKASHI: "Hmmm. We could prepare the shrine area for their arrival by dousing the perimiter with oil. Or we could wait and ambush them, attacking silently when they sleep, and hope to even the forces quickly and silently. I would expect at least a couple sentries while they sleep, if they are a disciplined force."
8 Mar
GRAIAN: "While I do not want to leave them alone too long, I think a little further exploration would be of value, get a better understanding of what is around us, how many are in the area. If we are going to clear the hornets nest, let's understand how many nests there are."
8 Mar
TOBIAS: "Ok, so if those other places are close, why don't we go by them real quick and check them out, then head back to the place what had the idol, see if we can find out where they're coming in or going out, and figure out how to get them, like setting those traps."
13 Mar
ATACIUS will get out the map for everyone to see.
(updated the URL to Ataciu's anotated map)
8 Mar
CALLIN: "Then let us explore the other areas. Perhaps we may stumble across them in our travels. However I can't imagine they would stray too long from their idles. We should return soon to check on them."
13 Mar
OK, got it! But... I realized that before I launch you on your merry adventure, any preparations? How will you get to those places, as there are no direct roads from Appleton to them?
13 Mar
(I'm not seeing the map. I'm thinking we grab some rations to take with, and maybe we can get someone to loan us horses?)
13 Mar
I've got a horse already, so I'm good there. ( "A Holy Grail? Uh, he's already got one, you see." )
I'm hoping that there will be trails to these locations that have survived since the doom.
13 Mar
As you've patrolled the area surrounding Appleton, there are some trails that lead to other villages and the main trail that leads to the Skalfier road, but most of the trails and lesser roads have gone unused and neglected in the almost sixty years since the Doom.
14 Mar
Perhaps we could ask those in Appleton if they know of these places, or how to get there?
14 Mar
Several of the old timers nod when you ask around for directions.
"Wellll... old Mount Keep, that place, don' rightly know if the Marshal has troops there or not, it be old when I was a young lass! If ye want to head there, ye just head nor'west from the village, ayep, past the old ruins of Flynn and Christine's Heartbreak, seems like the right name don'cha think? Keep goin', ye'll pass the old stone block and rightly come up to the foothills o' the Oreterras. Then jus' head west, and ye'll probably see it, if its still standin'. The mountains be to your right for a bit, but if they get in ye way, ye've gone too far!"
"Mmmm... Orc Watch, that tower be raised after old Will'by Hold was overrun, that was 'fore the Doom, though. Not be easy, but ye are the ones if anyone be able ta' find it. If I remember, ye head just west from here. Ye'll come up to old Rock Mound and after that, the Barrens... rocky, rough place. Star' headin to the Sou'west and look for it to point in the sky in th' dusk... ye probably will take that long getting there!"

GRAIAN has a horse, thought we all did. Rations for sure, as I am assuming we would be out for a couple of days
13 Mar
CALLIN also has a horse. Rations, yes we should make sure we have food and gear for the trip.

Hmm, TOBIAS was originally interested in going if these places were close, so we could stop by them all in one day and still make it back to the abandoned village so we could deal with the problem there quickly. But this trip seems to keep expanding... I thought we were saving the major expeditions for after winter?
14 Mar
ATACIUS has a pony. TOBIAS has a point here, expeditions through the wilderness in winter, even though it's only a day travel, is not entirely... wise. How many days to the end of Winter?
14 Mar
Winter is 90 days long, so you're a third of the way through.
15 Mar
OK, so we've got horses, a sense of how to get there, and now a question as to whether we should. Any thoughts on that... or which destination would you like to check out first? Mount Keep or Orc Watch? @Chris @Joseph Schnurr@Alan Krause@Derek Daniels@Gabriel Perez Gallardi
Let's make a decision by Friday.
15 Mar
TAKASHI is restless. There is only so much training he can do, and so many days riding around Appleton. He will volunteer to scout out a path to Mount Keep with Claudia, if the others do not yet wish to travel. Then, he can try and scout out a path to Orc Watch. This way, when the weather changes and spring arrives, we will know where to go.
15 Mar
GRAIAN will join Takashi and Claudia on the ride.
15 Mar
TOBIAS would probably stay at home, rather than join in the scouting. He'd definitely be up for helping to deal with the "whoever-they-are" that made that mess in the village (he's still never seen an orc yet) or if anybody needs help with anything else.
15 Mar
CALLIN will join TAKASHI, GRAIAN, and Claudia.
15 Mar
ATACIUS is torn between staying in the manor, a cozy spot near the fire, reading some of the Athenum books with a mug of cider and a slice of pie, let's make it the whole pie (those books are huge), and joining his friends on this endeavour, that will allow him to update his map with precious information, valuable information to Kellina at the Library. "Well, I guess I can bring an extra blanket, an extra skin full of cider and wrap the pie along with the rations!" ATACIUS is going too.

OK, moving on to Act 17! :)
